Hi billy.

I just got into a small skirmish about the same question on sending a PZ3 file to someone...
I was told I could not do that from a friend..

I'm being lazy here... but you could go to Daz website and ask a representative about that..
Get it from the horses mouth... so to speak...

Don't forget to let us know......

My understanding is that the PZ3 file format is a holder for all the assets (figures, props etc.) that you've put together to create a scene.

A simple prop may not use external geometries or textures, but everything else will probably need to reference external .obj and texture files.

If you created the prop yourself, you can send the PZ3 and any other files required.

If it's freeware, check with the creator.

If it's a commercial product, then absolutely not.

so if i turn the prop into a figure it should transport everything in a pz3 file. its a prop of my creation btw.

A PZ3 File may contain copyrighted geometries or morphs. Even poses, lightsets and such may be copyrighted material. So, better do not send a PZ3 to someone else if you're unsure that anything contained in this file is made by yourself.

Textures are not contained in a PZ3 File.

You can send the .pz3 file, but the person would have to have all of the items and textures and poses etc on their computer in order for the items to show when they open the .pz3 file on their computer.

A .pz3 file is not sending them any of the item files themselves.  So it's fine.  Just keep in mind that unless they have the objects etc, Poser will ask them to locate all of the files that you used.

thanks acadia. i just changed it to a jpeg and shrunk it a bit. it's now a 1.08 mb file instead of a 22 mb file lol. i know i explained what i did in an e.mail to you but it may be of use to others. i did a quick render with it and it's clear enough

Poses? Poses are saved inside the pz3. > Quote - A .pz3 file is not sending them any of the item files themselves.

That's generally speaking wrong. If external binary morphs are not disabled (so for any Poser version before 6 anyway) morphs (injected or not) would be inside the pz3 file (as already pointed out by ADP obove). A prop without external geometries would also be included. So a pz3 can well include parts of copyrighted material. Eg. sending a PZ3 containing a morphed Victoria 3 to someone would give them those morphs and that'd be a copyright violation...

If you are using a pz3 to share a prop you created and a texture that you created from your own photo or from an image you created in a paint program like photoshop or paint shop pro, for example, and your scene only contains the prop and the texture, you should have no problem sharing that.

As stated, textures are never embedded. .pz3 is an ASCII format so including textures would be impossible without going to some kind of binary to ASCII encoding like UUE. AFAIK, everything else, geometry, lights, poses, morphs can be included. I'm not sure of what the process is for deciding what gets included when but it's definitely not always just a description file or manifest. It's easy enough to open it in a text editor and verify, unless ... your editor won't open a file that large - which kind of reinforces the fact. Not even Poser could develop a file format as bloated as .pz3 if it only contained references to external files :-) Ed. I just tried dropping a .pz3 with embedded geometry into UVMapper and it extracted the geometry and allowed me to save it as an .obj file.

To send someone a .PZ3 you need to run the CollectSceneInventory.py script in you PythonPoserScriptsUtility folder.  When you run it be sure to select Copy Files from the drop down.  The script will then ask you where you want to save a copy of your open .PZ3, and it will then add copies of any external files, used by the .pz3, to that directory also!  Just be sure that your geomteries file .OBJs are'nt compressed as .OBZ, becasue the script wo'nt add .OBZs.  You have another sript in that same Python directory, call UncompressPoserFiles.py to Convert .OBZs to .OBJs.
