I can't seem to unzip my Renderosity files to Poser in Windows Vista. It has such a stringent interface as far as changing anything outside of My Documents, that it won't allow WinZip files to go to their correct places within Poser. I have administrator privilages, have changed the Poser folder so it is no longer read-only, but can't seem to figure how to do it. I know I can unzip a file to my Documents folder, then copy it to the Poser folder, but that would be very tedious. This is going to be a problem when Vista hits next year. Perhaps if Renderosity goes to installers like Daz? Any of you folks out there using Vista and have a work-around for this?

have you tried something like Winzip on Vista yet?

Did you try using an external runtime instead?

my vote, regarding vista and tiger/leopard, would be to have all runtimes (and as many poser files as possible) in the documents folder or on an external drive, someplace where it's safe for poser to rewrite files. I also hope they fixed P7 so it doesn't try to rewrite files in the tiger/leopard apps folder, but maybe leopard is better at handling that. there were some betas out, but I didn't try 'em. another rumour would be that vista is a copy of jaguar/panther, hence I reckon if that's true, then there are gonna be permissions problems (or whatever they call 'em) in vista, and old daz installers won't work.

I use WinZip to extract with my Windows Vista and I don't have any problems.  Of course, my Runtimes are all external and out on one of my external hard-drives.

Hmmm, Interesting direction you guys are taking with putting the runtime folder either in My Documents or on a second drive. I guess if I did that, when I loaded a character, say a texture or outfit for Vickie 2, Poser would prompt me asking where this or that file or texture was? I would find the new runtime directory for Poser and everything would work fine. Do you guys run two runtime folders, one for the initial Poser install, the other for added 3rd party items?

A lot of people tend to have at least one runtime folder outside of the main Poser installation.

However, I would recommend against putting a runtime in My Documents, as the file path will be much longer than if it's on an external drive or it's own hard drive, and I've run into problems where pz3s had paths truncated as a result, forcing me to tell Poser where the item it was looking for was every time I opened the file.

I have 11 Runtime folders located out on one of my external hard drives.  I load these as I need them and unload them when I'm done.  The only content in my Poser install is what came with Poser.  This allows my Poser to load in about 30 seconds since it doesn't have to look at all the content.

I didn't know Vista was out yet, duh!

I've been using Vista since Beta 2 and am now on RC1.  I'll be getting it when it comes out the end of January because I really like it.

Ok, I have an external runtime folder now, with a bunch of additional stuff in it. I've launched Poser 6 and have looked at every option, preference and button, but don't see how to direct Poser to my external runtime. So I created a shortcut from the external runtime to my Poser 6 program folder. That worked for about a 10th of the stuff in my external runtime. The other 9/10s didn't show up. Too long a path?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Vista hasn't been officially released yet and the current beta versions have a lot of bugs in it still.  My guess would be that your version of Vista may be conflicting with certain zip files.   Just my guess.

You'll see two folders, one titled Poser and the other Downloads. The Poser one will have a red dot next to the folder icon, that dot shows you which is your currently selected runtime.

You'll see a + at the bottom of the menu, clicking that will bring up a box where you navigate to the runtime you want to add.

To navigate between them, just go to the "top" of the file menu, and click on the runtime you want to go to.

I know that some zipfiles produced for Poser will fail to extract with the Windows internal zipfile/folder functions, but will work with third-party utilities. You can access the folers within the zipfile, but fail to copy subfolders. It doesn't sound as though this is the problem, but... The problem appears as files with a filename identical to the subfolders, one file for each subfolder. WinRAR has no problems, and doesn't even show such files as existing. (Makes note to avoid Poser forums when Vista comes out: will teo weeks be enough?)

Thanks modus0  for the detailed info on how to add external runtimes. It works like a charm. Will probably go with a second internal drive rather than the external USB 2 I got now (too slow). As for those of you wondering about Vista, it is a free download from Microsoft, you simply register for the Beta program. You can install it as an upgrade to your current OS, but I don't recomend it (I had all sorts of problems). Instead save all your important docs, etc, and do a clean install (wipes your drive clean). Vista is ready now, this was final beta. Next month it goes to the computer companies so they can ready their new systems for early next quarter sale. I have a 4 year old Compaq AMD 2600+ with 1 gb ram and Vista Ultimate works fine on it. Extremely stable. All my 3D programs Poser, Bryce, Hexagon, Carrara and my games, WOW, Half Life 2, Call of Duty, Fear, Doom 3, etc, work fine also. Vista feels like a cross between Mac OS X, Windows 2000/NT and Media Center. The permissions system of changing files, deleting things is a bit of a pain, but the overall experience is pleasant. I was very pleased that my 3D programs worked so well seeing as Vista uses a new version of Direct X. Again thanks much to all.
