Subject: Help settling a Debate slightly OT

cruzin ( ) posted Mon, 13 November 2006 at 7:57 AM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 11:27 PM

Ok, here's the situation, four guys in this office discussing Rendo.  The topic what holds more weight, views or comments. We end up in a stalemate basically because two of us may get 100 views and about 14 comments, the other two 200 plus and maybe 5.  That turns into, well it's because of the gallery you post in and a whole bunch of stuff, it gets ready to spill over past our lunch break and since the highest ranking guy gets the final word, we boil down to what image is better the one with 200 views and 20 comments or the one with 500 views and 4.  I say the one with more comments, I get someone to join my camp, two others go the other way.

I'm trying to make this sound as impartial as I can, basically the winners get to talk trash betting for money is a big no no in our office.  So if you can help a few good men out, we'd appreciate it alot.

All of us have galleries here but since mine is the one that doesn't really fit in either equation I get to pose the question.

Thanks,

Dee

Taking silliness of this whole discussion apart (no offence to anyone...), my opinion is that more views means more people were lured by the thumbnail, while more comments means there were more people who spend more of their time at the image given. Time is precious thing, if someone's not your loyal fan (or a troll) and yet takes time to leave a word or two, it really means something. My gallery is neither often viewed or muchly commented, so I don't care that much, but I find personal comments more precious than anonymous hits.

woohoo pt 1 goes to me!

You get a group of male Marines together....this is by far the least of dumb things we've discussed/argued.

well thats simple ... Comments!

Views say absolutly nothing.. about the image here at rendo.

You can upload  a emtpy image and use a thumbnail with a set of knockers on it and you have 400 views..

And no image to show             So views say nothing ...

Comments do say something..

just because someone looks at something does not me they will like it.

heck, i've viewed lot's of stuff i didn't like. now when it comes to leaving comments, because rendy is a site where constructive comments are discouraged; sometimes i say something and other times not. if there are already a tone of comments i usually don't add to it unless the pic really speaks to me.

You Mr. Peabody I do the same , heck sometimes I look at those specifically with no comments or very low comments because there's some really good stuff out there but name recognition seems to be the biggest draw I see hear, so often some very wonderful works are overlooked because it may be right next to a Prog (no disrespect) render...

Then there are the times when I'm just commented out...but I usually find the same render later on down the line and wonder why I didn't post a comment and then realize, the day I didn't was because commenting sometimes is more work than the render, I try to give more than the "super render" not saying I don't do those as well, but my first ten comments of the day are normally long and drawn out, by the time I get to 20, I'm burnt.

The downside of that is some people feel obligated to leave a comment because I left one on theirs...(you can tell) and that goes on way too often but I'm getting even offer (yeah not a word in the way I mean it) topic.

the score so far is

2.5 to nothing...at least that's how I see your last comment as a (0.5 for comments but nothing towards views)

pakled ( ) posted Mon, 13 November 2006 at 11:01 AM

comments are good..no one ever leaves one of those 'by accident'..yet I'd exchange 500 views and 0 comments  (current record,...408..;)

comments are the thing, however..... and there's always a however, a lot of artists here are part of cliques who view and comment on each others works all the times, skewing the view/comment factor all over the place.  I get views but average about 3 comments.  the comments are from talented artists who may stumble on my work and like it.  thus far I am no one's favorite but people still view and comment.  I'd much rather have comments from the general viewing members than be in a group that feels obligated to view and comment to fellow members of that group.

Nude Vickys, sword in hand, posing in a temple will always get views and comments.... to the point where they should have their own category/genre.

Hasn't NVIATWAS become a bit of a cliche by now? Or do people actually still make those pics other than as a joke? Personally I've only made those as parodies on the genre...

As for comments vs hits.. Well that thumbnail with a pair of knockers and no pic behind it would most likely GET a lot of comments, too. A lot of "Ha-ha" and "this is cheating" comments. But still comments. So it would APPEAR to be a VERY popular image on all accounts - eventhough it's not really there.

Personally, if one of my pics get more than 10 comments, I regard it as HIGHLY popular.

1358 hit the nail on the head, there are some mediocre artists [including me] that get shed loads of comments [not including me] simply because they've put themselves about a bit and got loads of contacts here and they comment on each other's work, that may sound cynical but it's true!

Just go and look at some galleries that have lots of comments and you'll see it's the same people commenting each time, tit for tat!!

I average about 10 per image and they're ususally from my VERY loyal fan base who I think are great if slightly odd [just kidding fans!!].

I'm happy when my images get looked at.....and I'm even happier when they get a comment. (like one or two on average..) While I do my art for myself, I really like it when other people like it too. Otherwise why share it at all?

It does get a little depressing sometimes when my favorite renders where I try something different get like 50 views and no comments.....and then I do a quickie with Aiko or AnimeDoll and get over 200 views and lots of "Oh I like" type comments. I'm not complaining about these incidents, I'm glad people liked my quickie, felt like a render moments.....but that doesn't mean that when I go out on a limb and try something different I want those images to feel ignored.

Even if I only had 50 views on an image, I'd be happy with a couple of comments too......something other than wondering what I was smoking when I put it together.

comments weigh a lot more to me than page views. i'm sure i'm not the only one who has been lured by good looking thumbnails but found the entire piece to be totally disappointing. i very rarely comment myself, but when i do it is because there is something in the said piece that captured my attention or perhaps moved me...if there isn't, i simply move on. so yes, definitely the comments.

linkdink ( ) posted Mon, 13 November 2006 at 9:05 PM

When I started out, both hits and comments meant a lot to me.

Now ... pretty much just the comments.

Hits I can get any day...just put a nipple in the thumbnail.  Comments are much better...especially when they are honest, and creative.  If I've screwed up (which I have, on rare occasions...nope, can't keep a straight face) I'd much rather see one honest comment with a suggestion as to how I can improve my work  than a thousand anonymous hits.

I know the other guys you're talkin' about Cruzin and as friend and fan, I think you achieve a happy medium I'm trying to get, yes I want people to view what I'm doing and it would be nice to see a comment or two other than the ones you leave (that doesn't mean to stop commenting ) but for me I'm just trying for the point where I have enough comments to rate a rating.  That would make me happy.

Ok the above is from the wife, what's wrong with big boobed Vicki with a sword in a temple.  I like views over comments.  I like to see big numbers, sorry, if they liked it or not, hey at least someone looked.  (note to self more big boobed girls in thumbnails)

@Slinger

I have to agree with you, I really appreciate it when someone points out an error, or a better way of getting an effect. I also appreciate all the nice comments I get, don't get me wrong, but I really value it when someone takes the time to leave some feedback about what they liked - or didn't like.

To me Comments > Views any day.

The trouble is there is so much stuff being uploaded every day... you miss some VERY good images, heck, I've missed some absolutely spectacular ones, because they scroll off the page so fast.
