Subject: Renderosity's "Our Thanks"

zulu9812 ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 7:48 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 4:20 AM

from an email I got:
The entire staff at Renderosity would like to extend our gratitude for your business. From Monday, November 20th through Friday, November 24th, all orders ending in "23" will receive a $10.00 MarketPlace Gift Certificate.
What exactly does this mean. How can an order end in 23?

JenX ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 8:04 AM

Each order has its' own number, and if the last number of your order is "23", then you win the Gift Certificate ;)

LOL, obviously after, otherwise it wouldn't be a "contest'.  The order number is generated at the conclusion of your purchase.

Wow... a store out to make money... what a concept! Where do they come up with these ideas? We need a word or a phrase to describe this new, novel apporach to product exchange. Capitalism? Free Market? Maybe we should hold a contest...

Yeah... so, how does it work at the store you run at your web site, where you shell out all that money for servers, hard drives, comm lines, banking interfaces, and staff, Chris? How do you pay those bills, hmm?

Hi BAR-CODE,

I'm sorry that you feel this way, but we did this same thing for Halloween, and a lot of members let us know that they enjoyed it, so we thought we'd do it again for Thanksgiving.

We do have plans for the future to do fun things around past purchases, but the programming hasn't been completed on all the fun, new things we have planned for the Community.

I cannot deny the fact that normally when you run a store, you want to make money, I don't think you'd find a vendor here or elsewhere that would argue that point, we are merely trying to do fun little things is all.  Please keep in mind that more new things are headed your way for the coming year.

We do sincerely appreciate your business in the MarketPlace, and your involvement in the Community.

Sorry, I was trying to be funny, and I guess it didn't come off well.

I didn't think that you had a store, I just meant to point out that things are very expensive to run here, and I think that any kind of discount at the store should be welcomed, as opposed to be ing shot down because it has something to do with making money. If you've got your own web site, then you know how expensive it is, and if you can imagine having to pay on top of that for credit card vendors, banking, office management expenses, multiple servers, and staff payroll, you can certainly imagine how important that it is that they keep bringing income through the door.

BAR-CODE ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 2:35 PM

Hi CJ1
I know what it takes to run  a store on Inet or in RL ...
But the point i did try to make is
DAZ give's away a "Pro" product each week  for Free ..
And they give away vouchers from 2 to 5 dollar just by typing in the codename..
No need to buy or enter anything.

This site has his popularity from the FREEBEE's here .. not the store not the gallerie
but the huge amount of FREE ! Bee's ...

And then looking at this "say thxn action" i think 30$ is alot to spent for a chance to end up 23
remember ending up on 23 is every 100 !! sales
23
123
223
323  etc etc ..so 1000 sale give you ? 10 chances.... but 1000 x 30 dollars =  thats a BIG amount of Ca$h for 10 little 10 dollar vouchers ..thats end up a 100 dollar on 30.000 dollar made.

That is my point ....
Chris

Remeber i like this site but it becomming to much a money machine instead of a Artcommunity

there's an american holiday on nov. 23 this year. it's related to the story that some early british colonists were saved from starvation by friendly indigenous folk, who later died of smallpox, unfortunately.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 3:30 PM

I'm sure the ones that won would think it was fun.

But the truth, the odds are so low that it should not have been worded as,"The entire staff at Renderosity would like to extend our gratitude for your business."

You should have said it was a holiday special or bonus or contest. Not a thank you.

Just to give you an idea of the odds of getting a thank you prize if your lucky. I have been here since 2001 and have a very long purchase list. Only 2 times in all those years and products is there a 23 on the end of the invoice number. Not very promising is it.

Something like a 25/30% discount on a purchase of $30 would have been better, even useful. As for spending $30 for the extreme off chance of winning $10, not worth it.

All the statments here are MHO and may not reflect the same opinions of the chosen few.

yes that is more "fair" in my eye's too, and no must end on XX for winning .

Lucky for me im not the only one here who think this way ....

The car dealer where I buy my cars from is giving away free gasoline to every tenth customer who comes in for a test drive. Should Renderosity be offering free gasoline because some other store does it? DAZ is DAZ, and R'osity is R'osity.

If you wouldn't mind, I'd like you to go into some more depth on that one. I don't understand how "making money" and "being an art community" are mutually exclusive. Why can't or shouldn't an "art community" also make money?

They didn't have to offer any kind of reward or discount at all. The fact that they are parceling out the discount to a randomly selected group is a time-honoroed tradition in the retail world (be the 100th customer and win!). They've elected to define an eligible customer based on how much they spend, and a random factor.

And, what does "fair" have to do with it? Everyone gets the same chance to get the discount. You have to meet an eligibility requirement ($30 purchase), you have to have some luck (order number ends in a certain number). Seems completely fair to me, although I'm not sure how that matters, anyway. It's not a contest, it's essentially a bonus discount.

billy423uk ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 4:49 PM · edited Mon, 20 November 2006 at 4:54 PM

its not a bonus discount. stop trying to fanny us jack lol, it's an advertising gimmick. dressed with a thank you. you see them every day on tv. my wife creates them for her clients, "she's in advertising btw".

billy
an edit....you also say it's not a contest yet in a previous post say  "it's like entering the lottery" ya can't have it both ways..well you can but thaat wouldn't be fair..and i know...you may say lifes not fair.....but death would disagree with you hehe

But I like having it both ways... ask anyone, especially my wife... I'd have to double check the exact wording, but I'm virtually certain that it's not a contest under Tennessee law, anyway. 😄

You say your wife's in advertising... wouldn't she be more comfortable in a nice dress, or perhaps some jeans and polo shirt? Just checking... giggle

Death and I are currently not on speaking terms. I'm not going to bore you with the details, but he knows what he did, and when he decides to be big enough to discuss it in a mature manner, he knows where to find me...

billy423uk ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 8:23 PM

i doubt it's a contest under any law lmao.

at least someone will hopefully get something extra which is good for those that do any way you look at it.  unless of course everyone who gets an id number ending in 23 spent less than 30 bucks hehe. as for death cap'n, it doesn't speak, it just collects. i know he's collected from me a few times. lifes the talker and deaths the walker lol. actually she's a strategic planner (not death, though she could be)  but she does wear clothes when she leaves the house. not sure if she keeps em on at work though lol...(i'm just kidding if you read this tess.)

If it's a contest, is it a lottery?

elzoejam ( ) posted Tue, 21 November 2006 at 7:24 AM

Yeah, I think this contest or whatever is silly. I thought the Halloween contest was silly, too. I certainly don't consider the possibility of maybe having an order number end in whatever number a good reason to spend money. I'd only win if I was shopping anyway, which I am not this week. I am not a complainer, generally, but I don't understand 'Rosity's marketing. The coupons aren't nice enough to send me shopping when I wan't planning on it either. LOL.

I'm always interested in risk and probablity theory. Looking at my own purchases, the odds of turning up a '23' as the last two digits would appear to be 2.4%. That is about the same odds as taking a single spin on any number on a roulette wheel and winning. (That's a wheel with one zero, BTW.)

So it's fine if you're going to buy anyway, but the odds are not attractive enough to buy something in the hope of winning.

billy423uk ( ) posted Tue, 21 November 2006 at 4:19 PM

was that with 30 dollar items or all items. if the latter then the odds go up dramatically

Belladzines ( ) posted Wed, 22 November 2006 at 8:09 PM

.. the chances of me getting the last digits to be 23 are just random like me lol.....
i havent bought anything for myself in over 2 months.. i made one purchase last week for a friend's birthday... thats it.... no more spending for me for a while sigh ... need to save save save!!!

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 22 November 2006 at 8:36 PM

Just for the sake of saying it, I'd tend to go along with the idea that a "thank you for your business" sort of thing would be a coupon or something.
I think otherwise, something like that might be considered along the lines of a "lottery" of sorts, and, far as I know, is not legal to do so in the US without extending the odds to people who haven't purchased anything, except in the case where the purchases is solely for the purpose of gambling. (e.g., buying a lottery ticket)
I could be wrong about that, but I often see similar things in very fine print, informing consumers they need not make a purchase in order to qualify.

In any event, fun or not, that's just a weird way of saying thanks... it's like saying, we appreciate you if you buy more, and maybe, if you're lucky, we'll extend our appreciation a bit beyond how we appreciate others.

Belladzines ( ) posted Wed, 22 November 2006 at 10:36 PM

actually i just got Daz's newsletter in my inbox... (slow yeah)..... and i'm happy they gave me a $10 voucher as a thankyou.... just for being a plat member.. now mind you - that means we pay $7.95 per month to enjoy the plat club..... so thats a huge bonus on top of the $5 you get voucher wise per month.....
now that just rocks.....
