Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 20 7:20 am)
Sounds like you have a problem with your .AVI codec You need to go to your device manager, I am hoping you have windows. Select multimedia devices and check to see if your video compression codecs are installed. Especially the ones that are called Microsoft video 1 etc. Are you getting the error message right after you specify the file name as click save? If you are the poser is having trouble locating the video compression codec. The procedure for fixing this will require more information.
"Windows98 installs right over itself. So it's not all that bad. Just takes about 30 mins" Yeah... unless you're like me and got a damn Compaq and no Windows 98 disk--- just two "Full Restore" CD's that not only reinstall Windows, but also reformat EVERY drive! I know, I know--- this isn't the place for this, but it really irks me--- all that money that not only I spent, but that THEY make, both MS and Compaq, and I can't get a simple, stinking Windows 98 CD with it?!? ...... Just to stay ON topic, I actually had this happen to me once before. I can't remember what the solution was, but Norton Utilities took care of it somehow.
I didn't miss the little dude missing from the render progress till you mentioned it. BUT If I go click on the AVI, WMP pops up and it plays fine. SO, the codec is installed and working, Poser has just lost touch with it somehow. It seems the only way I'm going to resolve this is going to begin with "Format c: /y /s"
Exact same troubles here -- on three different computers. Windoze knows where the AVI codec is, but Poser does not. All three worked fine at one time, then suddenly stopped creating or playing AVI's from Poser. Not a big item for me (normally output .tif sequences for inputting to video editing system) so I've never delt with it. If you should come up with anything helpful please share.
Nance and Nerd, are either of you running Office 2000 by any chance?
I had the problem so long ago that I can barely remember it now. Jeff remembers that reinstalling Windows 98 fixed it, but I'm starting to think I had to uninstall something as well. Office 2000, or some components thereof.
Another thing you might want to try, just on the off chance, is re-installing QuickTime. I've heard that even the PC version of Poser uses QT for something...not sure what though.
If I remember anything more I'll let you know...but I haven't had the problem since, so there is hope.
Well I gave in. Refreshing Windoze did no good. Completely removing and reloading poser did nothing but lose my sketch presets (The one thing I forgot to backup) Removing QT and WMP and all Compression codecs and reinstalling all those had no effect but to waste time. I even installd windows into a new folder (In an attempt to aviod a complete melt down. No Dice. Backup every thing and wipe out an otherwise health install of windoze. It now works again. How long though? Remember what caused it to flip was that Poser locked up during an animation. I'm sure there is some damn RSR file some where that got screwed up but nobody seems to know where it is. I sure hope to hell that Poser 5 doesn't have RSR files or at least is able to maintain them better. Remember folks all those "Out of Memory" errors are just screwed up RSR files. Delete the offending RSR and it will start working again. I just wish I could have found the one taht was ticking Poser off this time.

I was doing a movie in Poser, Poser locked while the movie was rendering. I restarted Poser. Since them I can't create an AVI. When in the "Save as" window when I click save I get the message. I've reinstalled Poser, clean and reinstalled all the patches. Any ideas? I saw several previous threads on this topic, but no solutions
