Why not start with V4 now?  I did, I screwed up a lot of things in my Poser 6 install anyway due to my noobness with it so I had meant to tear it all out and redo it anyway, but why just sit on your hands for several days?

Why not start taking advantage of multiple external runtimes and install to a separate folder just for V4?

I've been using external runtimes since P5 and love the fact that I don't need to reinstall all of my content to new Poser versions.  I just link the runtimes as I need them.

Yes, I may well try that.

I hadn't really used the multiple runtime function much.

A good opportunity to try it out properly.

Good suggestion.

Ta!

Here's a big plus that I've learned over the years with this.  When I start my Poser (doesn't matter whether it's 5 or 6), I only load the native runtimes so Poser isn't looking at any other content during the load.  This means my load time for P6 is about 15 seconds since the only content is the native stuff.  When I need a runtime (lights, hair, V3, V4, whatever) I add it and when I'm done and ready to shut down I unload any of my external runtimes and then close Poser.  Makes loading sooooooooo much quicker this way and all my content is organized the way I want.

Ah an interesting approach.

So you have seperate runtimes for Hair, Lights etc?

When I first installed Poser 6 I noticed it referenced the old P5 installation too and on occasion I did access the old P5 Runtime.

I uninstalled Poser 5 some time ago. Recently my Poser 6 installation in the C: dive fell over in a messy fashion so I re-installed P6 to my E: drive and kept it pared to the minimum only installing what I wanted to use and uninstalling it when I had finished the project.

My archive....mostly in zip format............ I access from a browser and just install what I want when I want it, and uninstall again when I am done.

I think your solution is more elegant. ;0)

I shall have to get familiar with setting up and using external runtimes then. :0/

Thanks for the input so far. Real food for thought.

My P6 boots up in about 15 seconds too! LOL

I take advantage of the external runtimes and the fact that folders can be nested.  My external runtimes are this
A3-H3 with each character having their own runtimes
Animals - broken down by vending site and animal type (canine, feline, equine, fantasy, prehistoric)
Freak
Girl
Hair - and this one is broken down to DAZ Hair, RDNA Hair, PoserPros Hair and Misc Hair
Lights - again broken down by vending spot and then by types (regular, AO, IBL)
Luke-Laura - each with their own sub directory
M3-D3
Milennium Kids
Misc Characters (this for all the odd ones like the Troll)
My Characters (this is for the characters I create and has sub folders for each base (V3, A3. M3, SP3, etc)
Props - this is probably my biggest and is broken down by vending site (DAZ, RDNA, PoserPros and Renderosity - and then into categories (Vegetation, Buildings, Transportation, Environments and such)
Sixus 1
V3-SP3,
and now I have one for V4

As I said, some of these have multiple subfolders which are also runtimes which can be loaded just like the main folders.  I love this aspect because when I go looking for something like Traveler's Old World vegetation, then the only runtime I have to load is the RDNA Vegetation folder and I don't have to look through all the different ones from other sites.

While this kind of tree won't work for everyone, it sure makes everything easy to find for me and allows me a lot of freedom in creativity because I don't spend hours looking for things.

I see...

I do a similar thing by way of my external archive.

As I said earlier though...I think your solution is more elegant...and it does appeal.

I'll attempt something similar.

Many thanks for that input. It was very useful!

You could achieve the same result and keep your runtimes linked in poser.

Simply switch to a small runtime before you exit poser. The next time you open Poser it will look to that runtime.  Large runtime = longer time to open. Small runtime = quick opening.
