Subject: V4: What's with her eyes?

Something about my first V4 render bothered me, specifically something about her eyes.  They just jumped out at me much more than I was expecting, too much in fact.

So I did another test render, first with V3 and then with V4.  These are in the default pose with the P6 default lights and the default P6 face camera.  I used default textures and rendered in "Final" mode.  The side-by-side composite is included here.

Two things:

  1. V4's eyes are huge by comparison to V3's.  They're not quite to anime proportions, but they still look inhumanly large to me.  That's adjustable in the morphs, but the default size struck me as an odd choice.

  2. V4's eyes are much brighter than V3's.  That is, the whites of her eyes are a much lighter shade of white, at least here in the final render.  A quick bit of Photoshop sampling shows that they're about 35% brighter.

So, this combination of larger eyes and brighter eyes makes V4 look like she's about to shoot death rays at me.  While I can scale down the size of her eyes, does anyone have an idea of how to dim her eyes to something approaching her older sister?

I said the same thing and still do of many of the renders I've seen, you really have to mess with the eyes kind of a lot to get them to look very different from default without simply making them ugly.  There is a less shiny texture and as TrekkieGrrrl taught us you can also unplug the Anisotropic node from the eye material in the Materials room/Advanced.

Hey D,, Have only glanced at the materials so far but it appears to have a choice of reflective surfaces. The glowball can be made invisible which leaves more conventional mat zones... These can be darkened (ambient on sclera) or re noded. The ball will be a great "closeup" reflect catcher

Ah, yes, I see the material issue now.  I've removed the Anistropic node from the Alt-specular of the Cornea and got these results.  Also, I shrunk the eyes some:

EyeHeight -0.452
EyeSize -0.7

It's still a little bright, but it's better.  The results are here (new V4 on left, default V4 on right)

kobaltkween ( ) posted Mon, 11 December 2006 at 6:35 PM

the iris is also much flatter up against the cornea, making her eyes look much less human and more cyborg (or glass, or  like contact lenses).  there should be an iris bulge morph that gives the eye some depth?  that is, from what i've heard.

BastBlack's render of both eyes
, no textures in the daz forums.  and aprilysh's helpful responses.

At least she's not cross-eyed like V3 is.

I am trying to just tone the value of the anisotropic node down some rather than remove it entirely; if you set value to zero I believe it does the same as disconnecting it, but you still have it when you want it.

Some women have big eyes.

I always found the Daz figures to have somewhat small and beady eyes - unaturally small. So to me this is an improvement.

As for the other issues in this thread, such as the Iris, I don't have an opinion yet. But Sydney seems to have deeper Irises from the new pics of her that went up today - but it is hard to tell until I actually get the figure...

I've heard that some Japanese women are getting black contacts in order to look 'anime'..;)

ThrommArcadia ( ) posted Mon, 11 December 2006 at 7:09 PM

I've heard that too Pakled.

I would also point out that the photo Arcady posted is obviously an attempt to make the woman look 'anime'.  Aside from her eyes being exceptionally wide open, the picture has also been processed, which means they could easily have tinkered with the eyes in Photoshop.

arcady ( ) posted Mon, 11 December 2006 at 7:15 PM

Well, nothing like that in the pic I posted. And her eyes are no bigger than most people I know - they might even be a little small. You will find just as large of eyes on Koreans and Chinese. Even many of those funny looking pale people from the north-west tip of Asia have larger eyes than V3 did. :)

That pic has not been processed.

It is a photo. Go look up these two women:

Ayumi Hamasaki and Kwon BoA (if only because those two have popularity levels making them easy to google image).

Just because you can't wrap your heads around something other than your own narrow ethnic group, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Larger eyes for V4 would help her manage not just more ethnicities, but also more variations of the Caucasian ethnicity.

Okay, okay, calm down Arcady, I was just expressing an opinion on a specific photo.  I am not here to debate the size of one race's eyes over another's or any B/S like that.

I still think in the one picture she looks like she is holding her eyes rather wide open.  There is nothing wrong with that, I've worked as a glam photographer for many years and we do all kids of tricks with the models to accentuate different things.  No matter what nationality of model, we've always done tricks to accentuate the eyes.

I don't know why you pull the ethnic card, with what I've said, but seriously, I meant no offense or anything like that.  If that is how you felt, then I appologize.

Part of the problem is the default pose for the face is "WIde-eyed" with the eyes fully open.  Lower the upper lid til the edge is half-way between pupil edge and iris edge and it doesn't look freakish.

Big eyes?  I used to go out with a girl with bigger eyes than V4.  Almost like an Elfquest elf girl! LOL  She didn't look freakish.....though she did look like a beautiful alien chick, though.  She made me feel like Captain Kirk.

ANYWAY--the eyes are fixable!

Cornea Bulge +1  and then Iris Bulge MINUS -2 !

That looks spot on to me.

If no one noticed, the lids have TRACKING morphs built in!  Move the eyes up and down and watch where the lids go!  Woohoo!  AMazing!

The tears anistropic value needs to toned down to about .6 and edge on the transparency to about 50%, helps, too.

Yeah the eyes close up are very beautiful, the cornea presses out the upper and lower eyelids very naturally as she rolls her eyes up and down.

I'm of the opinion that her head is too large be default...by that's a different anthill to kick over. ;-)

Actually, it is kind of funny that we all get into these discussions/arguments about body form; with every figure, it seems, for every person who think the body form is perfect, there are plenty of others who think it doesn't look like a "real" person. With 6 billion people on this planet, I'm sure there is plenty of room for variation.

I'm a little put off by V4's default eyes as well; they are a little to large, but I think it's more that they look too bright and untextured; putting a decent eye texture on them seems to solve the "1000 yard stare" she has.

ThrommArcadia ( ) posted Tue, 12 December 2006 at 12:33 PM

I have something wrong with her eyes, put I can't place my finger on it.  I don't think it is the size, but there is something that makes it really difficult for her not to look, well, at least like she needs glasses.  I dunno.  The stare, maybe.  I don't mind her head size.  I don't want to reopen that can, but head size is an indicator of height, the smaller the head, the taller the person, but this is in general, I'm sure there are exceptions, and of course, there is no laws to constrain artists (nor should there be).

I do like that I can give her hobbit feet.  Hilarious!

^^ her head is still too small by default, she's about 5'11".  I mean, unless you like em really tall.
