Subject: How do I know if my plugins are intel mac compatible?

Pedrith ( ) posted Thu, 14 December 2006 at 8:47 PM · edited Fri, 13 December 2024 at 3:47 AM

Hi. I have bought some Carrara plugins both from the Daz site and the Digital Carvers Guide site. I have begun the slow process of moving things over to my new Mac Pro. I don't remember all of the plugins I bought (one was the advanced pack, another was a shader pack and the one from Digital Carvers Guide...I don't remember) but is there a way to tell if they are compatible with the Intel version of Carrara? I still have Carrara on my non intel Imac. Could I just copy the plugins folder over or do I have to reinstall everything? Also If I save a file internally and it contains a Poser animation will it work on my Intel mac without Poser, or do I need a version of Poser installed? Thanks. David.

Hi David, You've got a couple of things going on. 1) Power PC or Universal Binary Carrara, and 2) Power PC or Univeral Binary Plug-ins. Your "old" Power PC C5 will run on your Mac Pro under Rosetta. If you're using the Power PC version of Carrara on your Mac Pro, then the Power PC plug-ins you have will be just fine. If you've downloaded the free update Univeral Binary version of Carrara, (Carrara will run on either Power PC or MacTel natively) you will need the UB version of the Plug-ins for the UB version of Carrara. All of DCG's plug-ins have UB versions but the Power PC plugs will not work on the UB version. Inagoni has converted some but not all of theirs. Shoestring Shaders is in the process of converting theirs. I'm not sure about some of the others out there. The plug in developers are providing the updates to UB at no charge. So, it depends on what your set up is. Mark

Sorry Mark, but there's some wrong info in your post. C5 would NOT operate under rosetta, at least not on my new MacBook. C5 would not launch and the icon wouldn't even show in the dock. You must have the DAZ Intel version of Carrara for the new Macs, and new versions of the plugins, otherwise they will not load ("mcx failed to load error"). David, the DCG site has packaged all the new UniversalBinary plugins into one download. Inagoni is just a little more effort (you download the new versions from a single download page). You CAN'T just move the old plugins folder over, but opening it will tell you which plugins you've added, if you've forgotten. Keep 3rd-party plugins in their own folders inside the Carrara Extensions folder and they will always be easy to find when they are updated. holly

Thanks for the input Holly! Some folks don't have issues with C5 under Rosetta, some do. I actaully am running both since some plug-ins haven't made the jump yet. Mark

Yeah I'm using the universal binary version, and man is it fast. Thanks for the help regarding the plugins. David
