Subject: Firefox 2.0 has a spell checker, But don't try using it here...

Yes, Firefox 2.0 has a spell checker included in it apparently. Very cool thing it is.
If you're typing in a message box, misspelled words will be underlined in red. Right clicking on one of those words will bring up a list of possible corrections.
Like I said, very cool, and it seems to work well on all the places I've tried it....well...hmmm, with one exception.
Did you guess that that place was renderosity.com? Well, yeah.

But, didn't I know that even before I decided to try it? 😉

Unless there's some setting in FF I don't know about, or maybe an extension  to get of some sort? Works everywhere else....

Now, I understand that this entire site, as well as others, are in part examples of Bondware in action, but, to tell you the truth, if I were looking for forum software to use for my company, I'd just use good ol' phpBB software. Not just the spell checker, but other things too, including, but not limited to, the fact that the message text isn't resized with the rest of the page, and my browser tells me I have to adjust my security settings to use cut/copy/paste text with my mouse. Works with the keyboard, why not the mouse? shrug
And that's just the message box stuff, not anything to do with the rest of the site's functionality.

Why must we struggle here through these things, when every other site makes it so easy and problem-free?
I mean, seriously, this is the only site I visit where I feel regularly compelled to complain about the software, and it's the only site at which I see so many of the same complaints over and over again.
Is it just that we don't march in step with Bondware? 😉

You completely correct. While typing a message and making a typo, FF will still underline it in red, but right clicking will not bring up the FF spell checker. All one will see is "Cut-Copy-Paste". That sucks!

Bad Rendo..BAD!!

I prefer it over phpBB.

As far as the spell checking functionality, I've found one other forums it doesn't function on.

I can live with having to check my own spelling.  I just wish Renderosity wouldn't parse the SQL server so slowly.

The edit box is not developed by Bondware. They've licensed FCKEditor (which is free for personal/non-commercial use, AFAIK). So we can't blame 'rosity/Bondware for the lack of support of this feature.

I expect that the FCKEditor people soon will support this (admittedly nifty) Firefox 2.0 functionality.

As for parsing the database server - well, they upgraded the hardware, and it helps. But rewriting the database code, using MySQL 5.x and stored procedures, now THAT would really make a difference.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

I can blame anyone I want. As an American,  I reserve the right to be ungrateful, right or wrong.  😉

But, I think I'll be nice for the holidays, starting....tomorrow... or, soon. Real soon - in theory.

Simplemachines - Yes! very good stuff there. :)

FCKeditor does appear to have this feature - sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php  - been complaining about the R'osity right-click disabled option since it was implemented, 'cos Mozilla had the spellchecker available (as an add-on) prior to Firefox 2.0.

If they can't fix it, put a simple "Quick Reply" without any WSIWYG or editor features (restrictions ;-)) on bottom of each page for text replies, and have FCKeditor on a followup Reply page and/or the Preview page.  This will save bundles of bandwidth too, by not downlaoding FCKeditor EVERY TIME just on the statistically slight offchance that it will actual be used.

MikeJ,

If not tried already, type:

about:config

in the URL Address/Location field of Firefox 2.0.  Enter

spell

in the filter field, then set

layout.spellcheckDefault

to 2 (from 1).  You'll now have spellchecking on single-line input fields as well.
