There are a lot of tutorials out there for photoshop, however most require, from my searchings some knowledge already of the tools. Though they are great tutorials, and there's great ones here on rendo, without knowing the interface, its hard to understand what they are talking about.
My advice, which is what i did, is just open a photo in photoshop, and try every tool, to see what exactly its called, and what it does. It makes it a lot easier if you are familliar with each tool, so when a tutorial asks you to use it, you know the low down.
Yes! I did what Tiari did. And then got this book, Photoshop 7 Artistry - Mastering the Digital Image, by Barry Haynes, which also had a CD. Web Site, www.barryhaynes.com
www.photoshopuser.com
Okay, sorry to say, it's $99 per year for membership - but it's almost unlimited tutorials online, online help, resources, discounts for events (usually workshops and training - VERY useful!) and even equipment/software/hardware/whatever at said events.
If you're serious about PS, than this is a huge resource. good luck and most of all - have fun with it! Tiari and Keenart are right - just open images and play - get to know what the tool and functions do, THEN dive into tutorials and you'll be better at following them.

I'm really new to Photoshop, too. I have a friend who will sit and teach me, but he prefers it if I can do some learning on my own as well. So I found this site: www.trainingtools.com/online/photoshop6/index.htm and have been slowly working my way through it. It's for P/S6, but there may be one for 7, or this may get you started enough to get into it. (And it's FREE, which I've always found to be a pretty good price!)
There are 13 chapters, and a good table of contents. I've found it to be well laid out and easy to access.
It's VERY basic. I'm not much of a techno-geek, so I found the first chapters to be pretty dull (I don't care how the program runs itself when I'm not looking), but I've found scads of helpful bits of information that I've been able to use, have figured out how to do several things I couldn't do before, and was able to do some postwork on my latest image without getting any help from my friend!
I tried opening a photo and messing about, but somehow my brain wasn't able to make the connections. This tutorial bridged the gap for me.

It really depends on how you're going to use PS. Most of what I use it for is compositing so if you're interested in that the areas I'd suggest would be: 1) Layers & Blending Modes for Layers 2) Selection Tools 3) Channels Probably 90% of what I do in PS is covered by these three topics and most good PS tutorial sites will have lots of info on how to use the tools.
I have to agree with Bushi. If I was going to tell anyone where to start it would be with selection tools and a heavy emphasis on learning how to use layers. I don't do anything in Photoshop without using layers. And I still don't know everything that's possible with them even after years. I'd also suggest learning the clone brush, dodge and burn tool.
That said, before you start doing tutorials, read through the Photoshop help files. They really are a pretty good source of information for all things pshop.
Past that, some sites I would recommend...

Hi y'all,
I've been doing some Rhino modeling but would like to learn Photoshop. Googling 'photoshop tutorial' returned 17.3 million hits. Yikes!
Anyone have a favorite online tutorial for a beginner? If it matters, I have PS v7.
thanks
