Subject: Tien Shan, VUE 6 Version

I remember when I first downloaded VUE 6 Infintie how terribly excited I was to see what new sample scenes would be included. Yes, there are some brilliant ones that are VERY helpful.

I was saddened though when I saw that all the included VUE 5 sample scenes hadn't been updated. They were all using VUE 5 workarounds and tricks.

Soooo, I decided to look at Tien Shan in more detail. It's a phenomenal image. I have now updated it to VUE 6 Infinite, also incorporating many of the tips and tricks we share here, render settings, softness settings on lights, dramatic light settings, godray settings, etc etc.

My hope is that maybe each of the regular forum goers will take one of these scenes on, updating it for VUE 6, and maybe Agiel can put them in the backroom, or we submit them to E-on or something.

Just a much nicer package for new users to our community.

TIEN SHAN - VUE 5 Infinite version - as is

Sooo, which one are you going to convert Peggy? :)

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Thu, 01 February 2007 at 8:21 AM

Believe me, I thought about it - but with all the things I have going on now, I'd better say no.  If I'm lucky I get maybe an hour a day to do some real graphics done right now.

What a fabulous idea - Perhaps Agiel could organize this as a week ly challenge to everyone over the few months and then pick the best one to be submitted to eon.

An excellent piece of updating - well done!

<<  Scene file available.  >>

In order to help those of us who've only just made the move from V5I to V6I, any chance of making it available so that we may study the differences in detail?

Thanks.

I don't have anywhere that I know of to post the VUE file. If someone can suggest a place, I will upload it.

Can't do it, I'm afraid; that scene file is copyrighted by Eran Dinur, and redistribution is prohibited. You would need to get Eran's permission, as well as e-on's.

I doubt that its strictly legal to even post the re-rendered image. As far as I know they are only there to a) show what Vue is capable of and b) to be used for reference as a learning aid.

Y'know, there's still a lot to be learned by studying those old scenes. Especially Eran's scenes. He is a master of creating photo-realistic scenes with very low overhead. I find myself using his techniques as often as possible, and typically I spend less time rendering because of it.

Of course, sometimes spectral and volumetric atmospheres are great to use, but not necessarily all times. No disrespect intended, but I find his original image more pleasing than the reposted version.

best, Chipp

No offence taken. I actually like the blue hue more in his as well. As far as the legalities, wasn't aware of that. Good to know.

Still, maybe we can do something for the new VUE 6 users. I mean, a lot of the tips and tricks I have learned are from here in this forum, but with the backroom not really working it's hard to find one listing of all the most common techniques.

Any suggestions then from the rest of our community?

Well, I think the idea is a great idea.

And I have been sued, have sued, and have received enough lawyer loveletters enough times to know that until I am walking into court nothing really happens.

Besides you bought the scene, right.  You are not saying it is yours, everyone knows it is not yours, everyone knows who the artist is, and you are not making any money off of it.  No lawyer could ever forge a viable case against you, if these are the circumstances.

Your idea IS for learning purposes.  And being afraid to explore and learn the product, because someone says,,,"oOH, you better be afraid of the law-yers", is just silly to me.

That said, I like the first render better.  But will give the idea a shot between my own renders, given the time and chance.  I still think it is a great idea.  And if anyone wants to sue me, they can PM me and I will give them the contact information to do so.

How about looking at it as respecting other members of our community rather than a legal issue?

Rather than setting out to get into a legal battle why not approach Eran Dinur and e-on about Vue 6 versions of the scene?  Maybe if approached about it they will give their blessing to a project or update the scenes or come up with a third option that I've not thought of.  The worst they can say is no.

By not approaching them first you may get away with this once and yes you may not end up in court. But you might and then users who suggested you do this will probably mysteriously vanish and I doubt will pick up your legal bill.

The real danger for all of our community is that no one will want to provide scenes for free because we show those that do so little respect for their work and their rights.
