Subject: OT is it possible to block an ip in your mail?

Marque ( ) posted Fri, 02 February 2007 at 4:58 PM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 7:35 PM

I am getting so many bogus spam emails from accounts and people I have never heard of. I have been blocking them and have blocked what seems to be hundreds and more than a few have the same email account. Can I block the account?
Thanks
Marque

your ISP may have some filter set up, which you may access via their website. however, those bayesian filters don't work as well as one might like. block one IP range, and another will pop up in a few seconds. block one domain, and another will pop up. block one set of keywords, and they will soon change the keywords they use. in the end, you may wish to receive e-mails from registered or trusted recipients, which means no strangers at all.

Yeah I just saw a news report last week that SPAM on the net was up by 200% in the past year alone. I hope someone takes notice of it and starts doing something serious to spammers to make them pay for clogging the net with their crap!

I've used Mailwasher for years now - won't download mail without it!  Having 3 websites and various email addresses posted around just ripe for harvesting I can get over 1000 a day which is very frightening.

I check all accounts first in MW then after deleting all the spam and virus only download the legit mail in OE

I'm with Gill on this one.  Like her, I've been using Mailwasher for over 4 years now and have it set to display my Friends list and unknowns only.  When I mark something for the Blacklist it never shows up again and is automatically deleted when I process my legitimate email into Outlook.

This has prevented multiple virii that I know of and even more that I don't know of.  I only download and open mail from trusted sources since I can access just about any link from the Mailwasher screen.  Believe it or not, I'm accessing this thread from inside Mailwasher and not Outlook.

See Gill's link for more information.  There's a free, ad-supported version and a paid, non-ad version.  The cost for the paid version is only $20 USD the last time I looked and that includes lifetime upgrade and tech support.  I've lost my key a couple of times and they've always generated a new one for me, no questions asked once I verified the account information.

IF they still do it, there's also a free version but you can only use one mail account, not multiple.

There is also another similar programme that IS free called PopTray where you can have mutliple accounts set out on 'tabs'

Thank you. The free version has ads so I will wait until I can afford one that doesn't.

I'm another happy Mailwasher user, I have it set up to delete spam without even telling me, a dangerous setting to be sure as I could possibly miss something important but I'm willing to take the risk :D

If you go to Tools>Statistics>Message Logs you can see all deleted mail and there is an option to restore any message that may have been deleted accidentally during the current mw session.

The spam situation is a real pain. I've been using Incredimail Pro for a couple of years now and really like it. I can preview the email before downloading it onto my computer and if it looks like spam that got through the Comcast spam filter, then I just delete it. I tend not to even download email onto my computer anymore and use web mail unless it's something I know that someone is sending to me and that I want to save to my hard drive.
