Subject: Poser 7 & Hair

Hi All,

I've just bought P7 and some hair products from R'Sity-namely Maria,Jan and Toast of the Town Hair from Mylocka. They all have a problem in P7 but work perfectly in DAZ after manually finding the files(it tells you which file to go look for).
I am trying to sort it out with Mylocka presently and am awaiting him mailing instructions on manually applying these in the material room, but thought I'd ask if anyone could throw some light on the problem.

What is happening is that after I've loaded in V4,I attempt to load one of the above, but instead of the default shape and colour loading all that appears on her head is the mesh, which I presume is the .obj file. Also in the drop down list of character, hair, clothes etc where you choose which body part etc the hair does not appear for selection. After this trying to load another colour,P7 goes through the motions but nothing appears on her head.
This happens for all three hair products.
I have checked the location of the files on my HHD and compared it to the locations in the readme files and they seem ok.
Things I've tried:
1.Reloading via the 'content/load from zip'page.
2.Manually installing in the geometry/library etc pages.
3.Creating an external runtime-this possibly gives a clue;when I had created the named folder on my HDD with its own folder'runtime' inside,I unzipped the folder of 'Maria',opened P7 found the folder icon named 'Mylocka Hair' or some such(I've deleted it now) in P7 double clicked to open and there was nothing inside.

Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated as I'm wanting to use these with 'Vacuum Tubes'from Mr.Gorf.

Regards,

Mick

Hmm, some hair only loads as the mesh (in the preview window) and won't show up textured and with transparency etc. until you actually render them.

So, changing the MAT files for a different color, won't make any difference in the preview window. Do they work when you render? Maybe I misunderstood your question.

I did see somewhere, how to make it so the textures would show instead of the mesh in the preview window as well (assuming this is your problem). I'll see if I can dig that out.

in the olden days (poser 4~) poser did not preview hair well because of the transparancy. so venders had taken to setting them up to display in a diffrent fomat such as wireframe.

to change you hair back to a textured preview you need to know if it is a figure(character) or a prop. Most hair is a prop (especially if loaded from the hair library)

to reset a prop. select the hair then from your pull down menu go to Display>Element Style>Use Figure Style

to reset a figure, select the figure, and use Display>Figure Style>Use Document Style

don't let it get to ya Mick.

Poser market is full of leftovers and holdovers from previous versions (especially p4) that will confuse the newcommer. Just keep plodding along and asking questions when you need to.

NP at all and yes I know that feeling very well, lol.

I've had many of those moments concerning Poser stuff, so don't worry... it's not always the most intuitive way things work, so sometimes you just gotta figure things out one at a time.

Max_the_Dog - Don't worry about it, when being a newbie to Poser there is so much to learn. I've been using Poser for over a year now & there's still loads I should know by now!!
Regarding hair & the preview window, sometimes you can go into the material room & turn the t
ransparency all the way down & then back up again & then the texture may show in the preview. It doesn't seem to work all the time though. Hope this helps.

LOL, I've been using the damned thing for nearly 4 years and there's still PLENTY I don't know!!!
It's a beast!!!

Hi All,

Many thanks for your support and considerate comments.
While we're on the subject of 'what I don't know about Poser' how exactly do you manually apply textures in the MAT room?

Regards,

Mick

If you're in the Advanced tab, just click the button (looks like a little plug) to the right of the color for the Diffuse_Color. Then select New Node -> 2D Textures -> image_map and then in the box that pops up, click where it says None under Image_Source and then browse to your texture file (usually .jpg).

Just remember to pick a white color in that box on the left of the plug button, otherwise your texture map will be tinted by whatever color it has there (of course, sometimes you can use that to color something).

Hi Jadelu,

Thanks for your reply,I've tried your suggestion but I suspect I don't need to 'caus I've gor the texture in the large window in the 'simple' tab,and also at the bottom of 'Poser Surface' in the advanced tab.But I still can't get the texture onto the clothes.

BTW the texture maps I've found  are .mz5 or .png file extensions.

I am extremely confused-almost like the code writers have sat around and discussed the most un-intuitive method of workflow!

Mick

Jadelu,

It seems that I've now found out how to apply these textures, but I'm not sure how!!

Hopefully I'll be able to upload my first Poser image sometime soon.

Thanks for your efforts and patience.

Mick

Well I'll just confuse you some more then! ;-))
Some MAT textures are applied in the "old" way [still very popular] as a "MAT pose" and this will be in your pose folder, if it is you just need to double click on it with the hair selected.

Also if you have files with "Z" extensions it just means that the content is compressed, you can either leave it like that or uncompress with a python script, makes no difference in most cases, it's down to personal preference, I always uncompress mine but I have my own reasons for that!
Any other questions, feel free to ask!!

Hi Fixer,

Yeah,I assumed that was the way to apply textures.
Talk about 'you live & learn' jeez....

Thanks for your time and efforts it's much appreciated.

Mick
