Subject: Wheee!!!! I'm Back!

Acadia ( ) posted Wed, 21 February 2007 at 6:42 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 11:02 PM

My new computer arrived today and I'm finally back online!

I thought for sure I was going to have DT's from not being online but it wasn't too bad.  What I found hardest was having no computer period to do anything. I sure found myself missing my graphic programs!  hehe  I'm definitely a Poser addict!

This computer has a 22 inch wide screen monitor whereas the Dell had a 24 inch one.  I much prefer the 22 inch one.  Let's just hope that this computer lasts longer than 7 hours!  LOL

Thanks to everyone for their input on what components to get.  I think this computer is a perfect fit to my needs.

Out of curiosity could you share the specs of what you ended up with?  I won't have any criticism, because I'm just happy that you finally have a computer and I'm sure you will be okay from this point, I would just like to know what you settled on.

I have a question....

For some reason my personal folder inside my "Documents and Settings" folder is named "Powerland". I'd really like to have it named after me (Linda).  I tried to rename it but got a message that it was a windows system folder and couldn't be renamed. Is there anyway that I can change the name of that folder?

Find the Control Panel and run User Accounts.  There, select "Powerland" and then "Change my name". Okay your way out.  You may need to restart, so be prepared if that is required.

Hmmm... all that did was change what I see when I click "My Computer". I now see "Shared Documents" and "Linda's Documents" (instead of "Powerland's Documents"), which when clicked leads me to what I know as "My Documents".

When I click My Computer and "C Drive" and then "Documents and Settings", I still see "Powerland" instead of "Linda"

When I go to "User Accounts" in Control Panel, all I see is "Linda (administrator) and "Guest". I don't see any account called "Powerland", other than when I go to "Documents and Settings".

It won't rename the home directory, only the account.  What you probably want to do is create a NEW administrator account and it will create a new home directory with the proper name.

Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Create a new account
Give it a name, make sure "Computer Administrator" is selected and hit Create Account.  You should also set a password for that account (and for any other account really).  The Powerland account is likely created by the people at the shop who built your machine; you can disable that account so it can't be accessed, but still leave it there if you need to take it back to the shop and let them work on it; or you can just delete the account (that's what I would do).

Note that that will make you have to redo any personalization you've done to that account's profile, things like desktop settings and Explorer settings, color changes, theme etc.

edit: it's a little misleading, because the link "Linda's Documents" from My Computer is not the actual directory, it's a system generated shortcut that takes you to C:Documents and Settings...

Ugh!

I went to "User Accounts" in "Control Panel".

I changed that initial computer administrator account name to "Admin" (initially it was called "Powerland" and then "Linda".

I then created a new computer administrator account called "Linda".

Now when I click on "My Computer" I have the following:

Shared Documents    and    "Admin's Documents"

When I click "C Drive" and then "Documents and Settings", nothing has changed.  I still have the following:

Powerland, Administrator, All Users

Right, now when you log out, and log in as Linda, it will create a new home directory for you :)  It doesn't make the home directory until you log in for the first time.

Acadia, sorry that my advice didn't work!  I really couldn't try it myself, but would have expected Windows to update the user folder name as well.  How pathetic... ;)

Stick with pjz99's approach.  Hopefully you can then remove Powerland (but you might want to ask them if there are any consequences first after explaining what you did).

I'm glad I asked about this before I went further in installing stuff!  I discovered that not all of my installations were cross account, plus I had to go back and redo all of my email addresses. Some things I managed to move via "Shared Documents" but other things I couldn't.  I think I managed to finally get it sorted out.

I'll leave their account there. It's no big deal really. I just didn't like seeing "Powerland" when I was logged in. I've never messed with the User Accounts before so this was totally new for me. Good to know about though. Now that I have my own "Linda" account back,  I am able to get my bookmarks to show. For some reason they wouldn't show when I was logged into "Powerland"

I'm just loving this computer!!!  Once I get it all set up and my desk cleaned up a bit, I'll take a picture and post it.

Take a look at the Intel or AMD? thread on this forum if you want to see the uncertainty I've had about buying a new system.
After changing my mind about a million times and weighing up all the pros and cons, I've decided to stay with my current PC. Decided to do nothing (I'm quite good at that)

sigh  They sure don't make computers to last do they?!

A couple months ago I rebooted my computer and the screen resolution was all wonky.  Figuring that somehow I lost the video driver, I went to NVIDIA's site and downloaded it again and installed it. Fixed!

I always leave my computer on.  Two or three weeks ago I woke up and the monitor was black.  Thinking that my cat might have accidentally pressed the monitor button  while she was on the desk I turned it back on only to find it was actually on but had no display and was showing "power save mode". I rebooted using the restart button and it powered on fine. Again the resolution was wonky.  Once again I went to NVIDIA and redownloaded and installed the driver. Again it fixed the problem.

A couple days ago I woke up and found the monitor dark again. Only restarting didn't work. I had to turn both the computer and monitor off and leave it off for several minutes. When it rebooted it was finding new hardware and my Power Chute bar was telling me that no hibernation was detected so things wouldn't be saved.

I looked in Device Manager and saw that I didn't have a video controller drive. I tried the driver CD but that didn't work. I went to NVIDIA and downloaded the driver again and got a message saying that it couldn't be installed because support files or something like that couldn't be found.

Last night I turned the computer and monitor off before going to bed. Today it took me almost 10 minutes of pressing the power on/off button to finally get it to reboot with the monitor on.

Today the computer company that I bought the computer from come out today to get the driver up and running.  He thinks it's a failing video card.  He integrated the card into my motherboard and the card itself is sitting unattached to  anything, on my desk. I am going to finish transferring my files to my external hard drive and take the computer and video card in on Thursday. Whatever he did has my computer booting up without a problem now.

Given my history with electronics and bad computers, I'm glad I had the foresite to purchase a 5 year extended warranty. The cost was something like $100.00 so I felt the added amount was a good idea.

The catch is that the company they dealt with to put the computer together (Seanix) has gone out of business and while someone has purchased Seanix, they haven't gotten up and running as yet.  So the computer company said they will still honour my warranty as I bought the computer from them, but they will  more than likely have to use alternate compatible components.

His main purpose here today was to get my video driver in so that I can use my computer so I had to pay for today's service visit, but when I take it in and if it's found that it is hardware related, they will refund me the money.

I'm so glad that I made the decision to buy from where I did instead of keeping that Dell or going somewhere else to buy it.

With NVidia drivers, you MUST uninstall the previous drivers before installing new ones.  Other than that, it sure does sound like hardware failure.  A couple of things that can extend the life of your computer:

If it is hotter than normal a lot (good to have either front panel or software temperature monitors for the CPU, GPU, and/or harddisks),  you may have inadequate cooling or need to clean.  Especially during the summer, you may want to keep your computer in a cooler room or increase the cooling even further.

If your computer is prone to collecting dust internally, airspray it out frequenty.  Dust can cause overheating and lead to hardware failure.  Put dust filters on your fans or use a dust cover to reduce collection.

Also keep a look out for insects/spiders.  I've had a spider crawl into a computer, short out a board circuit, fry itself, and kill the board.

On another note make sure that when you upgrade your video card that it supports dual monitors and save that 24 inch  for then. then when you hook them up you will love how much room you have to move things around in whatever program you have open. You can even browse the net while working on a project. (really comes in handy for tutorials browser on one screen poser or DS on the other)

Hope your computer gets straitened out soon I know its a pain when your computer decides to screw up on you. My desktop decided to burn out the power supply a few weeks ago and after I replaced the power supply it refuses to connect to the internet at all and my processor is running at half strength for no apparent reason. Hopefully I can get that resolved soon.

Acadia ( ) posted Tue, 21 April 2009 at 9:21 PM

My computer hasn't been overheating.  I've felt the CPU and it's cool. Even the tech didn't feel that was the problem. He's quite sure it was the video card.  When he opened the CPU just to verify the type of video card that I have (he didn't believe me), he said something about the card being in a slot that wasn't direct to the motherboard (or something like that. I'm not very techie). He said it usually doesn't matter because the card will be found where it was, and has been found there for over 2 years.  He moved it to the other slot but couldn't get the computer to boot up.  So he put it back where it was, it booted up after a couple of tries.  Once he did that integration thing, the computer booted up no problem and he was able to install the driver from the driver CD.

The card I have is a NVIDIA 7300 G. I only wanted a cheapy one at the time so I went with a previous year model and it suits my needs quite well. However, it's now quite old, so when they change it I may pay the difference and get last years model instead. I have no need for a $700 video card. I don't do computer gaming other than arcade games like solitaire and I don't do animation either.

The 22 inch monitor was a good choice.  When I got my new PC I wasn't thinking and got the 24 inch... and then I had to end up buying a new desk because my old one couldn't fit the new monitor in it without the monitor being 12 inches from my face.  It ended up taking me 3 months to find the right desk for me considering my new needs because none of them in the style I like could fit a 24 inch monitor.

Also bear in mind that a 24 inch monitor stretches the pixels and a 22 inch doesn't (or not as much)
