is there a "newbie" section where dumb questions like this are already answered?? Hate to clog up the forum with questions like this.
well one way to not clog up the forum is read the Help file and the ifo on the site at EF...
Reading the info and help file pdf do give you answer to tons of question you then dont need to ask ......
RTFM or STFI ae Read The Funking Manuals or Search The Funking Internet ;}

Poser itself will import a number of file types. The main ones are .obj and .3ds. It will handle image mapped textures also. Max files cant be read by anything but 3dsmax.
lwo files may be radable if they are version 5 or earlier.
You may have display options set so textures dont display , they will appear when rendered . Or the object is white .
Poser likes .obj files, but will read the others. It's in the Poser manual (I hope) somewhere. Scaling imports will be tricky (Poser's scale is way different, almost...Lilliputian..;)
As for the 'whiteness problem', it means the normal display mode isn't showing the texture assigned to an object. Usually it will show up on render (at least my copy of P5 does). You may want to also check to see that the textures (ordinarliy, but not necessarily, jpg files) got downloaded or put in the right place. Poser is all about what files go in what directory (Doc Geep has a poster somewhere of what goes where).

Oh, I'd agree that some of the modern manuals are not very good, and the Poser manual does get quite vague in places. As for file formats, the only cheap way to get at 3ds Max files is to download the demo version. It's time limited. but you can do a lot of conversions in a month. Also, there's a program called Deep Exploration, from Right Hemisphere. Demo versions available, and they can convert Lightwave to .obj that Poser itself won't touch, as well as many other formats. In particular, models that use a .lws file can be converted from a set of .lwo files to a single .obj file. Some free modelling programs do import and export. I use Wings and anim8or for various odd jobs. And if something odd happens, try a different conversion program. I've had a wire-spoked wheel turn into a disk using Poser to import, but it came out OK going through anim8or. UVmapper Classic will clean up some problematic .obj files--just load and save.

Anyone know where I can find a list of files that are compatible with Poser? (Yes I'm asking tons of questions on here) I'm making a film and need to get technical real quick... so of course I'm buying models instead of learning how to build them.
Seeing some of the really really good 3ds and Max models for $100+ .. lots of money for a model when I don't know if it will work/render in Poser (I have Poser 5)
Also (bonus question) - when a model, let's say of a building is displayed and the model (including the street) is all white.. does that mean it will remain all white after rendering? Or maybe it's displayed all white pre-render?
