Subject: Vista with Poser, DAZ Studio, LightWave 9, Cinema 4D ... verdict?

My free Vista upgrade showed up today for my Dell XPS410.

What's the verdict? Has anyone tried it yet with Poser 7, DAZ Studio, LightWave 9, Cinema 4D, Photoshop CS2, and all the normal hot programs we use?

I've read in places that there are Open GL issues. Supposedly, my system is Vista ready. But being that we are tied into Open GL I want to be sure before I even attempt a switch.

And, just for grins, is there an option for a Dual Boot installation? If so, I might get something like Partition Magic to create a new partition for it.

Hi - My partenr works for MS and I got Vista a few months ago . . . it has been a big problem for me. I did have Open GL issues and had to selevt the other option. It worked then. There have been many issues with Vista in other ways. . . we turned off the Allow feature in the ads you see on TV because it was anoying. I get the "white screen of death" frequently because Vista seems overwhelmed. I am honest when I say it seems slow . . . and the people I know who work at MS have all taken it off their computers because of the processing speed. I reconned you do not do it - yet. I feel like a tester for MS and it is not fun.

Thanks, that confirms what I've been reading. I think I will hold off. 8-)

You have an XPS. :D

With an ATI card it should be fast enough for anything OpenGL.

nVidia? Wait another month- although the new 101.46 driver is REALLY stable, just lacking speed optimizations.

Also the reason why I endorse postwork (:D)

Deecey.. A Dell tech told my Grandson that he should wait at least 6 months before putting the Vista upgrade in the pc he got for Christmas.  Said maybe they'll have all the bugs worked out by then.  His pc is customized for gaming & after playing on his Mom's new Dell XPS410  which came with Vista, he told me he'll never put the upgrade in.

I'm running Vista Home Premium and thus far have had very little problems.  Nothing yet with Poser 7 or Carrara.

The catch is I went through and shut off every fancy little animation, Aero, the sidebar, absolutely all effects, etc.  It now looks and pretty much acts like my Windows XP did.  I've left most of the security features on, but that will be changing soon enough too.  It really asks me far too often if I was the one who started an application.

"Did you start this application?"

"Are you sure you started this application?"

"Do you want to run this application?"

It's enough to make you loose your mind!

I will admit that everything seems to run just a tad slower.  I can't say if it's the same for rendering, but whenever I do even simple things like open Explorer the computer seems to have to think about it.  Also, it sounds like my Processor is always working on something!

Anyway, no trouble with P7 or Carrara 5 yet.  I haven't got around to re-installing Bryce 6.1, Hexagon and some others.

For the record:

AMD 2600, 1.25 GB RAM, Nvidia 5700 Ultra 128 MB video card.

My system is a bit dated.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that mine is a year-old, supercharged gaming and graphics computer.

My initial experience with Vista

My Experience With Vista

Also, right out of the box my Dell desktop that came with Vista  had incompatibility errors for drivers on software that they themselves had installed!  Nothing like shipping out a computer with an OS that their own software can't use!!!!!!!!!!!  Stupid freaks!

Am I bitter towards Dell?  Just a tad!!!!

I've been running Poser 7 SR1 under MS Vista 64 Business with no problems...ONCE I set the compatability mode for Poser to W2K (right click on poser.exe, properties, compatability tab).

It's been very stable for me even running Aero (I really like Aero!) Same with C4D. Don't know about the others mentioned.

My current system:
Intel Core Duo E6600
2 GB ram
2-250GB WD harddrives in Raid 0
eVGA GeForce 8800 GTS

Hope this helps.

i7 6800 (6 core/12 thread), 24 GB RAM, 1 gtx 1080 ti (8GB Vram) + 1 Titan X (12GB Vram), PP11, Octane/Poser plugin, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Oh, and a wiener dog!
