This subject may have been covered recently, and if so my apologies, but... --------------------------------------------------------- A sample of my recent email: Date: Thu, 02 Sep 1999 13:49:29 -0400 From: ....... To: underdog@bewley.net Subject: hair your link at the poser forum does not work --------------------------------------------------------- I've been getting some email recently like the one above telling me that the Posable Braids object I have on geocities is a "broken link". Also, every time I try to D/L something from Fun Stuff that's out on GeoCities, I get a page that tells me the same thing. BUT!!! If I RELOAD the same page, the download starts up and it works just fine. Anybody got any ideas on what's going wrong here and how to correct it? It would save me replying to a lot of email (well, ok, _some_ email anyway). ===Underdog===

heya; geocities has a new 'policy' about not letting people remotely access files. roy made a... program thingy that supposedly circumvented the geocities 'no you cant do that' page. i dunno if yahoo/geo got wise to roy or what, but it rarely works for me. but i know it works okay if you just hit reload, so i do. you could point your fun stuff downloads to an html page with downloads instead of to files, which would make geocities happy. (on the other hand, you might get more emails complaining that they had to go through a page and an extra mouse click to get the file. :) )

My stuff is still on Geo also. I thought Roy had licked this for us. It seems to work fine now for me. When I click a Geo link I get the notice page first - but the download file screen pops up within a few seconds by itself. I must have missed any notice from Geo to users (who reads that stuff) but it was suggested that, in order to prevent people from avoiding their advertising by directly linking to files meerly stored there, Geo was attempting to require you to hit a html page first and blocking the direct downloads. (but why do the FunStuff menu images show up?) Beats the heck outa me.

Maybe it depends on which browser you're using or something like that. I am using Netscape 4.5 and it fails every single time for me. I get the first download page with the optional link, then I bounce to the page on geocities. I tried hitting the back key and clicking on the link instead, but it doesn't work either. Fooey. It happens with everyone elses geocities stuff too, as far as I have noticed. No big deal, I am relocating to www.fantasy3d.com anyway. I run that one, so it won't cause me any more problems. ===Underdog===

I'm using NS 4.05 and I get the download page and then the Yahoo/Geo page-nothing else, but in the address area (URL), the correct URL is given, so I just hit enter and the download starts. That's worked all the time for me since Roy did the download. At first I didn't see that the correct URL was there, but suddenly I did see it, hit enter and that was it. Diane

I'm working on cleaning up the funstuff, So if your links are broken, find another server to put them on. Broken Thumbnails need to be fixed to. Also: if your stuff is in the wrong place (like you have a Poser Ready Prop in the Mesh Objects section) please move it to the appropriate directory.

HEED MY WARNINGS PEOPLE! I called this one on the TRIPOD issue many posts back! This is a trend that is starting to take place with all these "free" hosts providing websites. They make MONEY by having people visit those sites...if we simply link to them and no one sees the ads...its like they are just giving the sites away for free..and that's not what they REALLY want. When they say free they mean YOU work for them by making a webpage...which attracts them business..basically you are the "proxy" who is working for FREE and not getting a dime out of it. Granted they are using those new "oh we will pay you if someone buys from your link on our site" tricks but what do they give you? A dime? IF they even keep up with their accounting properly and are willing to send you a check that cost $0.50 to make for you to cash a dime... There has GOT to be a way around this...I just recently switched sites from TRIPOD to Netscape (finding that too slow) and am now at Crosswinds. They do NOT require you to place ANY banners to them whatsoever...they do all of their ads on the main page and when you are creating your html pages writing the code. Other than that you can surf the sites ad free. So far they seem to work linking here... PAN.WARE is currently being mirrored to that new location and will be opening with a NEW set of textures and props...stay tuned! PAN~

...umm I have a Crosswinds site too, and they also have the "No link direct" deal. I found that out over in my main Forums hang out (SciFi-Arts). I moved to my current site (in large part because a friend of mine gave me the space free L)

PANdaRUS ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 1999 at 12:40 PM

Are you kidding me!?! I tested it and it was fine? Did they try and sucker me? Like make it work until I mirrored the site or something? Hmmm...let me test it again..... PAN~ peeved and annoyed at the FREE site scam.

bloodsong ( ) posted Fri, 03 September 1999 at 5:30 PM

why would crosswinds care if... oh, right. well, they DO have a policy that they are not a 'storehouse' for stuff. (for, say, poserforum downloads, or a backup of your hard drive.) well, i dont want to innundate poor steve.... but you can send your poser goodies to poserworld, and they host it on their server. no muss, no fuss, no files lying around on your site.

PANdaRUS ( ) posted Sat, 04 September 1999 at 10:30 AM

They do? Where is this Poser world you speak of? And how does one obtain entrance? PAN~
