Subject: How much is too much for a Runtime?

ajmarti ( ) posted Thu, 29 March 2007 at 9:20 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:21 PM

I noticed my Poser has become a little slower when i move thru the Library.

I put all the stuff i buy inside the 2nd. Runtime inside the Download folder that comes whit Poser. The original is practically just with Jesse and James and all the stuff that comes with it.

But everything else is inside the other one which has now around 21 GB.
When should i start creating a 3rd. Runtime?????

I am using Poser 6

Can anyone help me>?

A 21 GB single Runtime? Wow...

I have over 10 Runtimes already, though you have over twice the amount of hard drive space invested in content.

Anyway, IMO it's not a matter of space, but of organization. For instance, I am a big fan of Aery Soul products and thus I have a single specific Runtime with every item of theirs that I own. I also have a DAZ Gen 3 Runtime for Victoria 3, SP 3, Aiko 3, etc. I have a DAZ Gen 4 Runtime for, you guessed it, Victoria 4. I also have a Custom Runtime for assorted content from Renderosity, an Apollo Runtime, a GND Runtime, etc. And that's how I see it - I organize Runtimes to help me find my content faster. It's easier to just go into the Daz Gen 3 Runtime and pull out Vicky 3, then into the GND Runtime and morph her into GND2 rather than go through a mess of folders in a single Runtime to find the items to do that.

Silver... Now you scared me!!! LOL... Do you think I mess up everything?... I DO!...
Ok.. but at least i have my  runtime organized

But i'll take your advice.... i think putting all the different character by runtime is better

Thank you sooo much for your help!... I am getting Poser 7 next week (can't wait to arrive)
so i'am doing all my installing AGAIN...

Thanks again for your time and help!

I might be wrong but I guess the bigger the runtime, the slower things operate.
Opening Poser and switching between libraries slows down as your runtime grows.
I'm about at the stage where I need to create another runtime directory. Easy in P7 I've heard, but not sure how to do in P6. Perhaps I should read the manual.

Ashely in FACT is getting slower and slower , and i am using P6.... i've heard that P7 is different i have no idea in what way... i would love to know... for now i have only 2 runtimes

Oh if you're getting Poser 7 this is the best time to organize external Runtimes! Don't dump everything in the program Runtime or the Downloads one, else it's a pain when you finally remove a Poser from your system. I started organizing everything when I removed Poser 5 from my computer as I had too many items on the Download and the base Runtime in the program folder itself which I didn't want to exist as I was getting rid of it. That's when I sorted everything out...

Yea I'm using P7 now,  But when I had my laptop working on it with P6 it was slowing down.

now I  make seperate runtimes to the item like I have on for M3, V3, V4, GND, The Girl, The Freak, SP3 and D3 plus like Auey Soul I have on just for them and plus I have them into themes like houses-buildings-inside stuff in a runtime. Weapons in another. you get the picture.

Now I just have to remember all I have, that is were I'm pulling out my hair...

My only single runtime goes maybe around 30Gb. The only thing that is slow is starting taking between 3-4 minutes typically. I haven't noticed any slowing in anything else. Moving thru libraries take no excess time. Starting up time doesn't bother me at all. I've organised my stuff VERY meticulously from the beginning. That also means that I have no directories that have huge amount of files in them. That may affect the thing - I have only half a dozen top hierarchies for each library palette entry. The content is then found along that path. (Example: in the character folder I have "HUMANS", under that "V2", under that, "OUTFITS", under that "HISTORICAL", under that "POSERWORLD" and under that a list of historical PW Outfits for V2. It takes only few clicks to get into any item I've ever installed this way.) So ... big single folders might be the cause of slowing things down.

ajmarti ( ) posted Fri, 30 March 2007 at 6:24 AM

I think that's the key 12rounds!.... big single folders.
I've been reorganizing my folders inside the library by categories and i've noticed is really, really faster....

Usually when i hit the little arrow to display, let say, the "props" folder took some time to make it... now i've created folders inside the props folders by names, like M3, V3, V4, Stages, etc... and is really faster.

Thanks you so much for your help!

The only thing that troubles me is items that are good across multiple figures or are split into different folders.

Tracking things down is so hard!  I get so confused!

adn the hair, and the props, and the clothing!   Oh my when does it end?

Only when you can no longer buy an extra HD : D
