Exactly how are you putting in the picture mat? Cut-n-paste? Loading from file?
The only time I ever experience something like that is when I cut-n-paste from one Bryce to another while forgetting the clipboard got cleared.
If it's the other way, while loading from a file... try different file formats. Last week I had an issue working with new coffee foam mats where one file mustive been glitched and Bryce wouldn't like it. Re-saving in the same format didn't, though. So I saved in other formats and it worked.

Too often recently I've posted in these forums something derogatory towards Bryce. First it was because Bryce 6 would crash when I loaded an image, forcing me to save as new after every single thing I did (and even that wasn't foolproof). Then I tried to install Bryce 6.1, which my computer wouldn't let me do, and as a consequence Bryce 5.5 wouldn't work. I finally figured out a way to fix that, with help from everyone here, thank you, and now....well, now when I create a texture with a picture that picture disappears, becoming black. I am so fucking tired of all these things. I've been trying all night to fix this, and it seems I'll have to uninstall and reinstall Bryce 5.5 again. But I'll tell you, if Bryce didn't allow me to visualize so much of what I find passion for I'd never use it again.
Now perhaps I'm just angry...even as I write this I find I am calming down at last. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there to have such problems. And Bryce can't be completely to blame; often it's the computer itself that's faulty.
Well, I've said my piece, it's very late, and perhaps tomorrow I'll be able to fix the problem. Oh well........
