Subject: Grouping a scene

webmagic ( ) posted Tue, 15 May 2001 at 12:06 PM ยท edited Thu, 01 August 2024 at 2:29 PM

I have created a scene, a cell actually, bunks, toilet and sink with two occupants. I would like to group all of these objects so I can duplicate this cell to create a cell block. Can this be done. I tried the grouping tool and got very frustated. Neither the manual or the Poser book I have explain this very well. Can it be done at all? And will I be able to pose or change the items in the copied cells? Thanks in advance for any assistance Webmagic

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you go to export and only export the objects as wavefront, want the "cell" be an importable object with textures included? If the textures are not included the you will have the material list to readd the textures. Just a thought. skee

I do know that the grouping tool is the wrong tool.

Try saving the core cell to a file, and then importing it multiple times. When you have one cell set, pick one object to be a parent to all the rest. That way to position the cell, you only need to move the parent object, and the other objects will follow.

Try parenting all the figures and other props to one prop (not a character) and save the whole thing as a character. You can fiddle with the character once brought back into your new scene. I have brought in a simple prop from the Prop Types prop menu and hid it just for such purpose

Erm... don't you just press that little plus sign on the side bar? A window pops up asking you to select a subset and you can check the boxes for all the props you want to include.

I'm not sure what "little plus sign on the side bar" means. I've just used the character menu to add a new character that consists of several characters and props AND which I don't want at least one of the characters to conform with another. An example might be troops in formation. I could group four soldiers into a single "character" so that I could either add rows or columns as needed. I have also exported a character group (person plus clothes) as a prop (3DS or Obj) and reimported the character as a prop. It puts less strain on the application and improves render time.

Yeah, I think for the cell exporting as obj and reimporting is ptobably the best way to go, unless the toilet seat moves etc. The little plus sign I mean is the one on the libraries side bar. Open the props library select a part of the scene and press plus. Choose the elements to install and voila, a cell (xith or without moving toilet seat) ready to be added to any scene).

Thank you everyone, I'll try each approach mentioned. This is the best forum with the most helpful people!!!! I hope to post the end result someday. Webmagic
