Subject: Apollo, Beowulf, Grendel, and more...

cedarwolf ( ) posted Mon, 21 May 2007 at 8:37 AM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 1:09 PM

I am in the process of attempting to create a graphic version of Beowulf as an example of graphic storytelling for my students.  As always, I've got a list of questions:

I have Anton's Posable Fantasy Hair and Beard, for the M2 I think.  I need to be able to adapt them to Apollo.  Is there a free kit or CR2 somewhere to do this?

I need a simple materials room setup that will allow me to apply a medium length hair to the entire body of a character in order to actually make Grendel.  As I don't understand shaders, nodes, and such (haven't had the hours to spend learning the process so far) it would need to be truly idiot friendly.  And free...

There are a lot of Nordic/Fantasy/Celtic armor and weapons availble in assorted free download sections.  If anyone has read John Gardner's "Grendel" I'm looking for longhouses.  Again, needs to be free because I get no budget for development of materials for the classroom.

Also, suggestions for settings, scenes, lighting....anyone got any ideas?  I'm working on scripting the baseline story over the next week or so (between teaching English as a second language to Asian students) and hope to have it ready to start storyboarding in two to three weeks...work allowing...

Thanks everyone.

good luck,
we usually tell people especially newbies to gather up all items first then create your pics and lastley write your story.
i know of no fits for the hair and beard mostly we just scale and postion to fit the best we can from one character to anouther......
most body hair is painted on the skin texture..(dynamic hair would be the only alternative but not sure if anyone has done body hair with it)
there are several houses that may work for you here in freestuff .......search medieval house as the key word.

have fun

would you like fries with that? 😄 no, seriously, use the attached link to find freebies, e.g. viking house. unfortunately, a good-lookin' wolfman character is gonna cost ya. but then it don't actually describe grendel in much detail, so one is allowed a certain artistic licence.

Check this site for the Very Tall Guy in a Hairy Yak Suit and the wookie texture that goes with it for a possible Grendle:[

I realize you requested free, unfortunately I don't know of any. However, Netherworks has created a utility to convert M1-3 and V1-3 hair to Apollo. It's under $10. CP has it as well as Netherworks site.

I don't even get paid for these endorsements.

But then, I remembered this thread...

Of course this will only work if you have the Apollo 2005 version, or you're patient and wait for the O7 version of the ScalpBeard to be released.

Sixus1 has a great werewolf - not free, however.

Online Now!

For something slightly more toony, Furraldo may work as werewolf creature. it's a free figure by Little_Dragon, can be found here at Rendo in freestuff.
Also in freestuff, there's The Wolf figure, looks like it may be useful too (search for "wolfman", and the figure should be the only search result).
Good luck :)

Wouldn't the zygote bear work for Grendel just as well?  I'm thinking of the Grendel's that were in  one of John Norman's Gor series of books.  Their discription was something akin to bipedal bears.

dang..I'm torn between wondering where the Grendel character is in the Gor books, or having to admit I read them all...;) There was a Grendel-like race that was an enemy of the Priest-Kings, but hey, that's ok..;)

They still publish the Gor Series or are we dating ourselves?

cedarwolf ( ) posted Wed, 23 May 2007 at 8:34 AM

Ah, Kajir...we do not date ourselves...that is forbidden even by some of the lesser species...wait...I apparenlty misunderstood that question.

My thanks to everyone for their help.  I'll check these out and continue to look.  I know there was a tutorial on fur for the material room and I'll look for that also.

Grendel as a werewolf?  Why not?  I've seen Grendel described as a demon descended from Cain,  a boundary walker,  and an ogre.
My personal favorite has always been the image my classic lit professor came up with.  Made Grendel look a little like Nosferatu.

Gor? Gor? whats that? Must have come along after my time.

gor as in "gor blimey"? it must be some antediluvian reference  grendel was probly based on the collective hominid memory of the gigantopithecus, which was the source of the various legends about similar creatures, e.g. the sasquatch, yeti et al.

Gor- sort of a sci-fi (uh...ripoff is too strong) scifi series of novels (looong series, I think it got up to #27). They were done from the early 70s through possibly the early 90s. The premise was there was a counterpart to Earth opposite us, but in the same orbit. Aliens controlled it (big buglike, but semi-benevolent), and kept technology from advancing out of the dark ages. Tarl Cabot, the hero, came from Earth, and wound up going through all sorts of adventures. Swords, sex, swashbuckling, and philosophizing about the 'puny' Earth people. There's a wonderful parody of it out there  on the web, actually in one of these forum posts a while back, about a plant being cared for, 'gor style'..;)

The 'troubling' aspect of it was that slavery was condoned; women were 'used' (Kajiras), and men just as work drones or something (Kajirus). The first 5 novels weren't bad, but you could see he was cribbing 'John Carter of Mars' a bit. After that, it became soft bdsm porn (not detail-oriented, but you knew what was going on). You'd start a chapter, look for the words "I wil never submit" and know it was safe to thumb to the next chapter..;) In my defence, I bought nearly all of them in used bookstores..;) Another tipoff was "Curiosity is not becoming in a Kajira. You might be beaten for it"

They actually made 2 movies of them back in the 90s (which affected Gor fans the same way Star Trek Movie 5 affected Trekkies/Trekkers...;) It just proved what I call one of the laws of Kink; the more obssessed the fethish, the longer the series will last. Some online readers will know what I mean..;)

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 23 May 2007 at 7:08 PM

star trek 5 was the one in which uhura (body double) did a striptease? it was pretty bad IMVHO. does that mean the gor movies were equally bad? I didn't see 'em. but slavery is condoned in many sections of this planet, women are used, and humans are basically work-drones. marx tried to change that, but failed miserably.

pakled ( ) posted Wed, 23 May 2007 at 8:18 PM

well, no..actually it was way worse, about spaghetti-western quality. The sort of thing you wind up watching at 3am because you're too drunk to change the channel..;) And yes, that's Star Trek 5 (what does God need with a starship?..;)

It's been a long time since I read Beowolf, but I thought Grendle was supposed to be a dragon of some kind.   If you're looking for a werewolf, Daz has a werewolf set for M2 that I don't think is expensive.

Wardrobe Wizard might be able to convert the Fantasy beard to Apollo if you have that very useful utility.  Frankly you might be better off with a map based beard with a long hair piece.  There are several texture map sets that have some beards for Apollo.
