Subject: Has anyone used a disposable camera?

redchilicat ( ) posted Sun, 27 May 2007 at 10:02 AM · edited Wed, 11 December 2024 at 8:52 PM

We are going on a cruise this summer and plan on snorkling, I really can't justify $200 plus dollars for a waterproof camera or a case for my current camera which I plan on replacing soon. I found a disposable Fuji Quicksnap waterproof 35mm loaded with Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 800 35mm film and want to know what kind of quality I can expect from this? Also if you have them put onto CD are they large enough files to edit (how do they compare to digital camera files)? Thanks Wendy

Wendy,

There are some reviews over at Amazon... seems like a decent l'il camera for its intended purpose:

They are pretty good, provided you don't intend going deeper than 1m below the surface as the light gets pretty terrible...

I bought some underwater disposable camera at Big Lots for $6 amd they worked find. I had it develop at a drug store and the prints was ok and I had the put on cd too. the cd was not too good for I have gotting a film scanner later on and I see the big diff from my scans and they scans. I do not got the cd no more and if I could I ould not get the prints too. I scan the film and I can see a big diff from the prints and the scans.
Oh the cd the file size was just over 1 mil not big and it was in jpeg. I put it in photoshop to see what I can do with it and when i saved it the file size was around 400. I did not resize it at all but it loss infromation some how.
When I scan I save it in tiff. I did save it in jpeg to see if I would loss information like the cd I got from the store. It did not loss no imformation? the size was the same the next time I saved it. What happen I know not. Maybe someone can tell us?
But the underwater disposable camera I bought worked fine. I love it and will buy more when ever I go to the beaches. I did not go far down for the water was muddy but it took great shots in the wave actions.
Look on pages 13 and 14 for some of the photos I took[in my gallery] . I know the camera can not go too far down just check it out on the box where it is writen to see how far down.
If you do not have Big Lot or if the store do not have them it will cost around $12 to $14 for one that will take 24 photos.
Buy one and play with it. Go to a lake close by and see what it do. Even if you put it in the water to shoot the sun set go for it. I know it will take super shots in a swimming pool for the water is clear there and You can check it out at the 10foot end of the pool

Someone whispered that **redchilicat** said,

What is your current camera?

Adorama.com had cases for digital cameras starting at around $60 to $80.

(on adorama.com, I searched for "digital underwater camera")

I also found the category "Underwater Housings", where prices started at $34.

Here is some food for thought (i.e., a thought experiment) ... if you have one
disposable camera, you get to shoot one roll of film ... if you buy 2 disposable
cameras, you get to shoot 2 rolls of film ...  but at twice the cost, ...

OTOH, if you get an underwater housing, you get to shoot as many pictures
as you want.  ... for as long as you own your current camera.

My $0.02, ... but it's your choice.  [grin]

p.s. It is also less expensive to shoot many pictures than to repeat the vacation.

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 that I am seriously starting to lose patience with. I plan on replacing it at the end of the year. I looked at a Pentax Wx something or other (waterproof point and shoot) and I found it as cheap as 230.00 I am still considering picking it up. I will take a look at the site you mentioned Thank You😄 to everyone who has offered advice
