Thanks pjz99. I saved the full size version of that pic because that makes planet creation
MUCH easier. That technique might be useful for other things as well. :)

Note that this is a very simple arrangement; if you really wanted to go whole hog you'd do something about the distribution or scaling of the atmosphere clouds to add some kind of atmospheric bands and concentration at the poles, and possibly something similar for the "land masses".  This was just a quick-and-dirty that came out fairly nicely.

Planet shaders are fun. They're simple to start with, but you can get infinitely elaborate if you're really into it - you could try to generate an atmospheric layer around the planet or even try to add rivers and lakes.
