SO, last night i decided to do a personal first and set the camera to monochrome because i knew i wasnt going to want the shot in colour and thus processing would be easier (somehow - i remember someone saying in the B&W thread that sometimes if you are shooting a lot of shots which you know are ging into black and white it is a good idea to just shoot in B&W). Also i thought that the RAW files would be smaller in B&W... but no - the RAW files are complete in colour (and as i shoot only in RAW these days i have only the raw files to deal with).

I suppose i have more control over the final look of the image now which is good (i realised i would be sacrificing that with a monochrome camera output).  But yeah - just to pass on the tidbit of info and my surprise at the outcome... RAW really is RAW even if you dont want it to be ;)

Interesting, I never shoot in B&W as I would rather just convert it in post. But I would have thought the same as you good to know.

Well, that's just bizarre, Rich. I just set my 30D's picture style to monochrome and took a couple shots. The're B&W in both FastStone and in Bridge. And they're raw, too. Anybody else with a 30D want to break the tie?

Rich, set up an action to batch convert them...that would save time and still afford some control over the process.

Might be the fact i am using RawShooter which might just disregard the bit of information which tells the image processor that it should be treated as monochrome. 

Thanks for the tip kort - but i decided that being as i had the control from full colour i might as well just do as i always do and manually convert each image to black and white...  to do otherwise would be like driving a Porsche at 40mph ;)

RawShooter may be the factor there. I hear what you are saying Rich, but trust me, setting up an action WILL save you time, even if you make each step controllable. It is amazing how much time moving the pointer around and clicking on a menu can take, especially when you are doing many photos.

my xti shots b/w in monochrome and it still comes out monochrome even in raw mode

I'll try this and see what happens in cam and both Raw Shooter and LtRm.

In cam mine were black and white its only on opening in RSE that they changed - i dont have any other raw editing program.

And as we are back on this thread - i recently set up some actions for my more used actions - mainly my borders and resizes, so thanks for the push in the right direction kort - it saves a lot of time :)

Glad I could help. It took me a few years before I started using them, and I could kick myself in the butt for not starting sooner. Actions are so useful for batch processing jobs. A search will turn up lots of free downloadable action sites, here is one of the better ones.

mmm... i don't like to shoot directly in BW, because i cannot play with the colors in the channel mixer. So i never been satisfied with my 20d configured like this.
