Subject: Poser 7 U.I. Driving me crazy

Hi all,

I am 'Trying' to run Poser 7 on my new system.

But once I get several figures into the scene the U.I slows to a crawl. Poser literally becomes un-usable on this system.

I suspect it is the video drivers I have an Nvidia 8800gts 645mb, Running on XP Pro 64. So my question is, is anyone else running a similar graphics card/setup. Are you experiencing the same problems and does anybody know wether there are any upto date 64 bit XP Pro video drivers.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

System Spec.

Intel QX6600
4Gig DDR Ram
Nvidia 8800GTS, 645mb Graphics card.

All running on an assus motherboard under XP Pro 64.

That's a heck of a system. Anyway, if that worked fine before it's definitely got to be the drivers.

Anyway, heck of a spoiled one, using "multiple figures in a scene" huh? Heh, I usually end up doing composites when I need more than one figure...

Could be the video drivers, but it also might be Poser itself. I run P7 on an Q6600, 8 GB RAM, XP 64 bit, nVidia 7800GTX, and Poser slows down when I have more than 3 hires figs with hair and clothes in the scene. It's better when I use SreeD instead of OpenGL.

I use the latest nVidia drivers for XP64 (93.71 AFAIK).

Also got XP 32 bit installed on that machine, and P7 performs no better under XP 32 bit.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

Thanks SVDL.

Its sooo maddening to have all this processing/rendering power and not be able to use it.

P7 in theory will now  allow large scenes to be rendered but now you just can't pose them. How Ironic.

funnily enough, my other workstation has two nvida 7900gtx, running in sli and even that bogs down, Crazy, though it can handle more than my new system.

Will try Sreed viewer, forgot about that one.

Well, Poser 7 supports multi-processor rendering but it doesn't support 64-bit address spaces. These are two different things.  Multi-processor rendering just means that the render engine will subdivide the task among the available processors.  64-bit address spacing would mean that Poser could address vast amounts of memory for complex scenes (id est: at least several hi-res figures).

This is basically apples and oranges.  MP doesn't mean better memory support for large scenes.  What is needed is Poser 7 64-bit (yah, right).  Don't expect speedier workflow in this respect on a 64-bit system and OS - not gonna happen yet!  With a native 32-bit app, you are actually losing speed because most 64-bit processors are slower than the best available 32-bit processors! The speed gains are in addressing space for 64-bit systems and since only render engines utilize the multi-processor/core CPUs, you won't see any advantage in the basic interface...

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

Be sure to have HW Shading disabled in the Preview Render options.
It not only slows the OpenGL preview down, but also makes the mouse behave more reliable.

With your hardware configuration you should be able to have 4-5 hires figures with clothing and hair items in the scene without too much slowdown.

Above that you might run out of memory and get into memoryswapping and that will slow things down considerably. (You can see this in taskmanager in Windows)

Be also aware that not only hires figures are memory intensive, but also some clothing items, dynamic hair and props

I have scenes with more than 10 hires figures (V3,SP3,A3,M3) with clothing and hair and props which is still manageable on a XP64. Intel Dual Core, 4GB, Nvidia 800XL and which will render 4000x3000 images. On an XP32, AMD 6300, 2GB, ATI video these scenes are extremely slow in the preview mode.

Very true. I have been seriously considering Cinema 4d R10 plus interposer pro, of course.

Looks like that combination could give me everything I need.

Just the outlay, ouch!!!.

For some reason,

The hardware shading option is disabled, poser says this feature is not supported, plus it will only allow me to have a max preview texture size of 1024.

I have run diags on the video card and they all check out. Thats why I thought it might be a driver issue. Poser just doesn't seem to be seeing this video card correctly.

If the HW Shading feature is not supported you might definitely have a driver issue, because it might not recognize all the features of your card.
Max Preview texture size should go to 4096. (although it this will take a lot of memory)

I have both an ATI X800XL and NVidia 7600Gt - older videocards - but these have all the features enabled.

Just to check - You do have 32bpp color on? If you have it set to 16bpp it will disable the HW Shading feature.

I sometimes set it to 16bpp to enable screendumps and forget to turn it back...

Best thing to do is to check for a driver update.
If there is none, then file a bugreport to E-Frontier. Since this is a relative new card, P7 might not recognized it and therefore not enable the enhanced features.
You did try the latest Service release 2, I assume?

My experience is that they take these incompatibilities (if that is what they are) very seriously and will seek or provide a solution.

Something else to try is reducing the number of Undo's from 100 to something less, like 10-20.

I know I experienced greater responsiveness after doing that myself.

Okay I always thought it is best to use the OpenGL display when your graphics card is capable of supporting it, and what's with this SreeD? Does it have the quivalent rendering quality like that of OpenGL?

If you were to pick OpenGL as display engine, which accumulation buffer do you choose, hardware or software? Is there differences inbetween them?
