If you don't know what it is, you will. It's the coolest input device since the mouse. Starting with Poser 7.0.2 support for the 3DConnexion Space mouse has been added. I don't know why nobody is jumping for joy about this becaue it's really cool.

Ok, I'll calm down and tell you what it is and what it does. I've alway felt the cameras in Poser were a bit awakward to position. I guess that's true for any 3D app. The SpaceNavigator is a 6 dimensional controller the gives you full controll of the camera. You don't need to click and drag this and that 4 or 5 different ways to get the view you want. Grab the navigator knob and with a twist and a roll you've moved the camera.

If the mouse was a Wright Brother Flyer then this thing is an F-15. Once you start using it you will instantly hate any 3D app that doesn't support it.

It takes a bit of getting used to flying the cameras with this gizmo, it took me at least 3 days. Pretty good for going from a box kite to an F-15 I think.

Poser's implementation is really good too. I've tried it in Max and the movement is very choppy when compared to Poser. I've only found one bug and that is that newly created cameras don't respond as expected. I think the dolly camera is backwards but that's just me and can be fixed in prefrences. I swear the cameras move smoother with this thing than when dragging them around with the mouse.

The space navigaor also responds VERY quickly to movement.. I keep mine set at like 25% speed, and that's plenty fast!

It took a few days to get used to it, but I'm really likeing it now.

But this is of no use in everyday mousing gestures or working in Photoshop or a text app??  I watched the vid and all it talked about was getting around in 3d space, not everyday types of applications.  Any input on this??

Thanks

Yeah... it's only for 3d applications. it does NOT replace the mouse, but suppliments it, on th eleft of your keyboard. (Assuming your mouse if on your right.)

It says on their web site that it supports Photoshop CS3 too. I have no idea how it works though, I'm still on Photohsop 6.

probably manipulating the new 3d content ability. That what it' sdesigned for.

Slide it up/down/left or right, and the 3d viewport corrisponds.
tilt or bank it left/right foreward/back and again that's what you get in 3d. Twist it, and the 3d viewport rotates arounf the center point.

Pull up, and the viewport zooms in, pres down, and it zooms out.. or combine any of the manipulations

Very intuitive once you get the hang of it. They also include a image viewer much like windows, but the zoom in/out abilitty is video smooth.

if you work with a lot of 3d applications that support it, or one or two that you use a lot, it becomes a very handy little gadget.

I have only 1 app left in my work flow that doesn't support it. It's going to get the boot in favor of one that does. Once you get used to it being there it literlly feels like somebody tied one hand behind you back when working in an app that doesn't support it.

I'm hoping some 2D apps will follow CS3. This thing could just as easily pan, zoom and rotate a 2D image. You might not need the Yaw and Roll but I'm sure some clever programmer will find a use for that input as well.

Now all we need is 3D web sites I can use it to fly through. Heh, I want an OS the supports this thing. A true 3D desktop where I can fly between apps and documents. So much for Vista BE.

OH, I wonder if E-on is planning on supporting that little jewel. Talk about realtime camera control....

Gareee ( ) posted Mon, 25 June 2007 at 9:18 PM

I really hope Eon is.. and doesn't just make that a new vu7 infinite feature instead.

By their history they should be ready to dump a new version with fixes and a upgrade price point pretty soon.

V6I will probably be my last Eon product. I'm pissed half the demo scenes and content were add on purchases. For what we paid for it, that should have been included.

I also really dislike the locked content crap as well. if I buy something I want to use it when and where I choose.

Hummmm I have the personal one and the regular one, do I have to buy a new one for CS3 or is there a place to download a new driver? Bought mine for Maya and Premiere Pro but since the move can't find the box they are in. Probably on the bottom of the stack lol
They are awesome little tools. Will have to check out P7 with them once I get to that box and unpack it.

Just found the little one on my desk and it does work in Poser! Thanks for the heads-up.

Just dropped the change for the PE version, just to see if it proves out as useful as I think it will. So Premiere Pro supports it? What about After Effects 7 Pro?

does it work in Shade?

Marque, You can get the drivers from the 3Dconnecion.com web site. Do get the new drivers even if you find the box.. The boxed driver had some problems on my system and the latest update fixed that. The latest drive also drastically improved the performance in Max.

Dale B, I Don't think Adobe added support till CS3 so AE7 probably won't. Tyger, I don't have the new Shade but 7 didn't

Crrrrap. I wonder if the Vista requirement for the CS3 apps could be nuked? If Shadowrun could be 'adjusted' to run on XP and DX9c with a few file overwrites, anything is possible....

CS3 runs on XP SP2, the last OS Microsoft made.

Vista is not an OS it's a virus. With PC manufactures fleeing from Vista any software maker would be foolish to build a Vista only app. Many apps and hardware will never be Vista "certified" because the manufactures refuse to cow down to MS's Mafia style strong arm tactics. Dell has jumped ship. Others will likely follow soon.

3DConnexion makes a Linux driver. Now we just need eFrontier to build a Linux version of Poser.

Aside from $40, what's the difference between the Personal Edition and the Pro version?  I haven't found a feature-comparison sheet yet.

Dale B ( ) posted Tue, 26 June 2007 at 7:03 PM

True....although do you really want to insult virii like that? I got a laptop with Vista on it a couple of months ago; I needed a portable, it was a version closeout and on sale, and I didn't want to let the V near my main box or rendergarden. More accurate to say its a hacked down XP with a sexy desktop that eats around 30% of your processor and GPU resources with bells and whistles. And the DRM schemes are even more intrusive that advertised... I didn't get stable video playback until I put AnyDVD on the puppy. I did like that little bit about the real reason why they rigged Vista to not run in a virtual machine....apparently it totally disables all the DRM crapola, and M$ decided it would rather be chummy with the RIAA/MPAA Gestapo than the sys admins and personal users. Oooops. Hm. If the CS3 versions are XP compatible, I may have to look at stepped upgrading, if the features warrant it.....

From my read, the difference is the liscencing. The PE version isn't liscenced for commercial purposes (which needs a better explanation, methinks), and you don't get support save through the website. The pro version has a 2 year support scheme. What exactly that means is anyone's guess atm.....

Marque ( ) posted Tue, 26 June 2007 at 7:42 PM

Thanks, downloaded the drivers and it's working great. Now to get used to it in Poser. Maya won't be too bad used it mainly there before I moved.

Dale B ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2007 at 5:37 PM

Oh, I'm in love with this thing...... Eon has =got= to add support for this into Vue. Besides looking sexy, its configurable and programmable. And the release notes for the latest driver package mentions both CS2 and CS3. Of course reconfiguring the desk to have room for the nagigator in comfort is going to be a pain as always, but..... Question to the python guru's. Does Poser's python implementation have any interaction with the animation timeline scrubber? A script that ran the timeline and let you advance or retard the rate (not affecting the the fps count, or anything like that) would pair up with this thing to allow you to realtime fly the camera through a scene. It would take practice, but you could do it (if the script idea is feasible).

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2007 at 6:29 PM

I have both, don't know if the little one runs Premiere Pro or After Effects, haven't tried them with it yet.

Just thought I would add my thoughts on the Space Navigator device.  I’ve been using it in SketchUp 5/6 and Google Earth for almost 6 months at work and really love it.  Of course, in that app you can really fly around the scene using the standard mouse/keyboard UI really well.  For poser with its relatively limited navigation options I think this thing will be even more useful.  I haven’t used it yet in Poser but I’m defiantly buying one for home to try it out.  They range from less then $50 up to $400 depending on the model (besides SN they have three other models).  But I’ve always used the SN and have no regrets.
