Subject: My first stab at furniture

I didn't see a forum for posting stuff to show off, so I'm doing it here.  Hopefully that's alright.

Anyway, being the newb that I am, I decided to start off with a desk.  I think I probably spend 2-3 hours on the thing.  Here is a link to it.  img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/molina00/AatDesk.png

Any comments or suggestions that will help me to improve are most welcome.  Rendered in DAZ with some lighting effect as well.

Eventually I hope to be able to create a whole office setting.  Just have no idea how to do something like an executive office chair right now.

That's a really nice desk - good work!

DramaKing ( ) posted Fri, 29 June 2007 at 8:36 AM

Good modeling, but it could benefit from a few area lights and maybe a hemi light. It's funny because that happens a lot to me, too.

It is better to do one thing well, than to do many things and excel at nothing.

Molina00 ( ) posted Fri, 29 June 2007 at 11:17 AM

Thanks guys.  I didn't really put a lot into the lighting.  If I was for a real scene I certainly would have worked on that more.  Right now all I have to make a scene out of is a desk and a person, so I didn't think it was really worth the time to do lighting.

I like the Secretary, but I'm curious. How you did you do the other side? 😄

I like the secretary too. hehe
A little better than just a boring desk.
I don't have a chair yet, but the posed worked out pretty well regardless.

I really didn't do anything to the other side, yet.  I was thinking I would add some drawers or something to the back later on.

3dz ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2007 at 11:13 AM

Did you create the Secretary, or did you import it as an object?

Molina00 ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2007 at 5:24 PM

It was a character I downloaded from somebody at the Daz forums for V4.  The hair and clothes were downloaded and I did the pose myself.

3dz ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2007 at 7:28 PM

Thats something I've never done in Blender. I've done it in Poser, Figure>>Conform to. How do you do it in Blender?

Molina00 ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2007 at 9:01 PM

I didn't do that in Blender.  I imported the desk into Daz and added the figure there.  That's where I did the render too.

3dz ( ) posted Mon, 02 July 2007 at 9:29 PM

OK, now I understand.  I got a little confused there.

Molina00 ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2007 at 9:21 PM · edited Wed, 04 July 2007 at 9:22 PM

Don't know if it was me or you, but sorry about the confusion anyway.

Here are some walls I put together for my office.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v233/molina00/walls.png

Kind of a small room right now but I'm going to make it bigger.  Just getting the stuff together for now.  The wall with the window took me hours to do.  Sometimes I love Blender, and sometimes I hate it.  Today I hated it. lol

3dz ( ) posted Fri, 06 July 2007 at 5:06 PM

No it's probably me. I think I'm coming down with the digital fleu. Virtual-reality,and reality.  All looks the same to me anymore.
Your office room looks nice.  It just needs that lived in look. Some small details like, a light switch and some pictures should take care of that. Looks like it will make a nice scene.

May be a light switche isn't such a good idea.  When I think about it, a light switch should be by a door. :blushing:

Hah, too true.  I may make a wall with a door if I decide to expand beyond just one room.

I'm working on a desk lamp now.  Just need to get the texturing to where it shows the way I want in Daz.  I was thinking of electrical sockets and such, and maybe some lamps on the walls somewhere.

My master plan involves adding some animated lightning flashes outside the window with Photoshop.  Maybe a full fledged thunderstorm while I'm at it.  That's a long ways off though at the rate I'm going.

Thanks for the replies.

Too cool, I would love to see it when you're done.  🤤

I just hope it will turn out half as cool as I have visualized.  I have a habit of getting fancy projects into my head and either not having the skill to make it work, or have a bunch of problems and ultimately give up.   I hate learning curves.

Today is another Blender hating day. lol
Just can't get the texturing on the lamp to render properly.

3dz ( ) posted Sun, 08 July 2007 at 12:33 PM

I know what you mean, when I first started modeling I was always going - (Huh!?). learning curves can do that to ya, and when it comes to Blender. The learning curve is very huge. I'm just starting to get around in it, but I still have a lot to learn.  Once I get this mapping thing down, I'm going to start on animating.
Blender is something I'm just coming back to.  Getting tired of Windows always freezing up when I'm in the middle of something.  I thought I would give Ubuntu Studio a try, I heard a lot of good things about it.
When you get done with your WIP, do a render with the XviD codec. So us people on dail-up can see it.

Uh, ok.  Just one question.  What's the "XviD codec"?

I wouldn't even want to think about animating.  I have a hard enough time getting my UV mapping to turn out the way I want it to.  I wouldn't think a free software would have such a big learning curve.  I guess I'm wrong there.

Finally, my long awaited lamp is finished (for the most part).  There is always some editing that can be done.

Many thanks to reddog for helping me through my texturing problems.  Here is the lamp.  If anyone has any suggestions please lmk.

As usual, modeled in Blender but textures added and rendered in Daz.  Also bump maps applied to the shade and the decorated part of the stand.
