Subject: Any way to make P7 recognize C:\runtime ?

ockham ( ) posted Tue, 05 June 2007 at 11:00 AM · edited Fri, 27 December 2024 at 4:55 PM

I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't seem to make
it work.

When I hit "Add new runtime", and point directly to C: nothing happens;
when I hit "Add new runtime" and point to the runtime folder itself,
nothing happens.

This is annoying because I like to keep projects in c:runtime for
easy zipping into 'release' form.

Did it work in P6?  I have several remote runtimes, but none use that name.  They have a character name, then the Libraries.  It's been a while now, but I don't think P6 would let me use "runtime" and that's why I did it the other way.

I copy product files to their own runtime for zipping, but only that.  Poser doesn't know about it.  I mail the bunch to my laptop.  If I get no missing file errors, then I can send to my beta tester(s).

I know, not much help :(

Just a guess; I'd imagine Poser expects the volume above any runtime to be a folder, not a disk. It expects a Poser installation folder of some kind to be there, even if there isn't an actual installation (if you see what I mean). If that's true, Infinity10 is right; you won't be able to do it.

Poser doesn't like external runtimes named "Runtime".   You can name it anything else you want just not "Runtime" ... like "My Stuff" and it will recognize it then.

@Infinity10:  Yup, that's what I've been doing.  Going with the flow.
I set up an "Allruntimes" folder, which holds my currently active projects.
But it's better for testing to have the "ready-to-go" project directly on C,
so that I can be sure the final ZIP gets exactly the same thing I was testing,
without any possible confusion.

@BeyondVR: This did work in P5 and 6, which is why I got into the habit!

First step: Select the drive you want your new Runtimes to be on. (External drive or what not). Then create the files that your content will be sent to example:

** **

Poser 7 Runtime

-         Victoria 3

-         Victoria 4

-         Aiko

-         Hair

-         Props

-         Lights

-         Ect

** **

1: If the Poser palette is hidden, click the bar at the right side of the interface to expand it.
2: If the Library Palette opens to display the library titles and not their contents, double-click any library category name (Figures, Cameras, and so on) to display the contents within it.
3: The first folder in the library is usually a special folder, the “up folder.” The arrow on the folder is an indication for you to click on this special to move up to the next highest folder level. To move to the very top, or root, of your currently selected library folder continue click the “up folder” until you see a red dot next to the folder icon. The red dot indicates your currently active Runtime folder, and it also tells you that you are at the top of your library structure, or the root. You can add new Runtime libraries while you are in a root folder.

**4: Now that you are in the top-level folder, two icons should appear at the bottom of the Library Palette window: a check mark and a plus sign. When you hover your mouse over the plus icon you see the words “Add Runtime.” Click the plus-sign icon to open the Browse for folders dialog box.     **

**Info Taken from the Practical Poser 7 Book.  Hope this helps ****                                                                                                **

If you're using WinZip 9 or higher, zipping from a subfolder is no problem. I always create a separate runtime for a project. When it's finished, I go into the project root folder, select the Runtime subfolder plus the Readme subfolder, right click and choose "Add to Zip".
The zip file will have the correct folder structure, starting with "Runtime".

Then to add the new runtime.zip to poser, just right-click and select "Exatract to" pick your Poser directory and, it's done. everything in it's place.

I just tried it and it's no problem to direct Poser 7 to a runtime under C: or E: but P 7 doesn't create the necesary folders under c:/ so you have to create them manually.

For a while I had alot of trouble getting D:Runtime to load, but it's huge.  Finally, one night, the last thing I did before I went to bed was try loading the external Runtime.  I left the computer on all night, and even forgot that I'd tried.  The next day I was going through my External runtimes, with Poser, and it's been there ever since.
