Please go to CP, click the "Passport Deals!" link on the left hand navigation bar, and tell me what the most recent deal is. I think I may be loosing my mind, but I have taken screen shots.

kalon ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2007 at 5:45 PM · edited Wed, 04 July 2007 at 5:46 PM

Dirt cheap for an entire planet!

Wonder what the price is for non-passport members!

Have you viewed the Readme? That tends to suggest it might not be such a good deal.

Hmmmn, yeah pretty grim. The filesize is none too reassuring either.

They are probably hoping for some Turbosquid regulars to drop by.   I love this line on the Silo ($109) site:

"Those who subscribe to the "you get what you pay for" mentality are strongly encouraged to contact sales and will be allowed to purchase Silo for the optional price of $1,000 per seat."

aeilkema ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2007 at 6:01 PM · edited Wed, 04 July 2007 at 6:03 PM

I like the Silo statement...... unfortunally MeshBox is adopting the turbosquid mentality here with their models, they want game developers to pay more for the same stuff poser users buy at 10% of the price. Vanishing Point also charges Max users more then Poser users. Strange habits some have.

As for the thing at CP, I guess we're all wondering what this is all about.....

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

I suspect not. More like either they've been hacked, from outside or by disgruntled employee, or they've made the classic mistake that a British bank made years ago. This bank created a template letter addressed to "Dear Rich Bastard", then accidentaly sent it out, to their top 100 customers, without replacing the dummy greeting.

I can't see that the CP thing does anything more than pull together lots of their previous offerings:  the White House, the Earth, comets, alien space ships etc. etc..   I am sure that they'd love someone to cough 10 million (with $1 change) for the lot, but I'm not quite sure what effect they are really hoping for.

Ah, Ok, so maybe I should be embarassed at not recognising him, even though I'm a European.

That's the way of the world. Users of professional grade applications expect to pay more so they do. If you can afford Max then $35 for a model is pocket change. Game developers expect to pay more because they would need redistribution rights for the meshes.

EricJ is correct: Max and Lightwave users expect to pay more for their models. (Not as high as some of the prices at TurboSquid, though.)

Many people have said that the Poser market is under-valued, especially when you can get high-poly models at DAZ for $1.99 in their Platinum Club or get sets of models for 75% off at Content Paradise.
How many times have merchants talked about the fact that some Poser users complain that a good-quality, $10 product is too expensive or that is should be offered for free? Many times, the Poser version comes with features that are unheard of other formats (MAT poses to apply textures, 4 or 5 (or more) sets of alternate textures, geometry swapping, etc).
If anything, the Poser version of a model should be much more expensive than the Studio Max model which does not include MAT poses and probably does not include alternate textures.

Very likely all true, but do they offer a hideous death, at the hands of the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse, such as CP is now offering for a mere $10 million?

The painting isn't of the four horsemen. It's called "The Battle of the Standard" by Rubens, and is belived to be a copy of a painting by daVinci.

Oddly enough I ran across the article when I wiki'd "Cerca trova" which apears in the product description. Wikipedia redirected me to the link I posted above.

Google translates Cerca trova as "It tries finds" or Seek and you shall find.

I'm a bit mystified by the product. There doesn't seem to be a punch line that would explain the joke. Could just be an attention getter.

Or could be just a joke that was never intended to escape into the wild. We have a plant on C3D that would be a tad embarassing if it ever found its way into the store...

Morgano ( ) posted Wed, 04 July 2007 at 7:41 PM

"Cerca trova":

Cerca:  "Seek"

Trova:   "Find"

Rubens was a far superior artist to Leonardo in every area of painting and drawing.   He did portraits better, did anatomy better (although he may well have owed a lot to Leonardo's own work on anatomy),  was something of a pioneer of landscape art.

What readme file?  When you click on it you get an art image.

Stuff like this happens fairly often at CP. Not sure why.  Possibly a publicity stunt or some really inattentive staff members working there.

Didn't Poser Science have a medium sized catalog at CP? Aren't they affiliated with CP in some way? Now they have three products, Earth - Final chapter at the price above, the Gift Bag which is now priced at $19,777 and the WTC, at a reasonable $9.95.

They had a camel which I had wishlisted, and I noticed earlier today that it was listing as no longer available.

The plot thickens...

GERMAN FIGHTER - BIPLANE

Well, they got the "WW1" and the "biplane" bits right.   And, yes, it is an aircraft.

Just for fun, I went into the far future and searched CP's archive of 2007 products.  Yes, I was amazed that CP still had a site.  Even more amazed that Free Planet Earth was still available for the price of a Snickers is then.  Anyway, I got the one copy that was available.  And no, it was totally not even worth the time to download.

And Earth's temperature is still as it is now.  No one remembers what global warming even was.

Just my opiniopn here.
I think many Poser users do it simply for fun and enjoyment.
Where as 3D Max users may be more Commercially oriented.

If I were attempting to earn a living at CG, I would consider paying out Big $$s, with the expectation of earing more $$s back with a product.

If I am a hobbieist, I would have to think long and hard over spending lots of $$s or something just for fun and relaxation.

I think the price reflects what the markets will bear to pay.

Also membership sites like http://www.poserworld.com offer a fantastic value, eg I grabbed over a gig of content for just $20 ... great deal.. and Allen's a great guy to work with.

Are there any other poser content membership sites out there with characters worth looking at?

For the right price you to can, have the means to leave the planet, own the planet, control/own the presidency, have access to a prized inheritance from the past hidden in orbit around Saturn, and a private get away on the moon.

Personally I think there are some good deals on fixer upper properties on mars.
