Subject: Has your rosity email been lifted by spammers?

Unicornst ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2007 at 2:52 PM

**This may be a silly question, but of those who have stated they get the spam to a private email.....how many download items from Free Stuff?

I ask because when I switched over to gmail, I didn't get any spam until after a download from there. Could be coincidence. But I had been getting ebots from all other areas for over 2 weeks before the spam started.**

lemur01 ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2007 at 3:54 PM

Yup, i'm now getting the greeting card spam too, started coming in the last 2 or 3 days. Haven't downloaded any freestuff or purchased anything for a while though.

hewee ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2007 at 4:29 PM

After you have done the new software site changed I too have been getting a whole lot of spam at gmail. I have another user name too and use the account just for your emails. Was getting maybe 1 or 2 spams a month but now getting 6 to 8 a day the pass 4 days or more a day. They seem to only show up when I also get mail from the site here. :(

gillbrooks ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2007 at 6:39 PM

I'm not sure that the spam is coming in just because an ebot or newsletter is sent out - I'm talking about the timing here, not the cause.

Personally, I've only had 2 spam emails to my rendo email in the last week and I get around 30 ebots a day.

I download FreeStuff often...so does not seem to be the "cause"....and just a note, a freind who does not belong the the 3d community mentioned that he got a "you have an e card from" junk mail thing recently .... oh oh... here go the hackers again! :(

Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!

CrimsonDesire ( ) posted Thu, 26 July 2007 at 10:53 AM

Well just to answer the questions:

  1. I download freestuffs regularly I think my last download was yesterday or so, although I rarely unpack those downloads right away and in fact have quite a number of unpacked files sitting about at any given time.

  2. I have not recieved any of the new Greeting Card type spam.  In fact my e-mail continues to remain quiet on the spam front and I am still recieving notifications of comments/image uploads, favorites, etc. daily.

  3. I recieved the Rendo newsletter last night.  Normally I delete it without opening it as it's esentially the front page which I see all the time, but I did open this one for the sake of the theory it might be connected to the spam.  I haven't recieved any spam as a result so far.

Hope all that helps a bit.

Finally while it's pure speculation on my part I wouldn't expect much in the way of offical progress reports from the Rendo Staff until their investigation and if neccesary security fixes have been completed, which may be some time yet in coming (I certianly don't know that is just a guess).

I'm certian we can all appreciate the need not to overtly state what steps are being taken, what checks they are running, when and where they are running them, what they have and or have not discovered, etc. pubicly until after everything they can do on their end has been done.  After all if there is a problem internally with Rendo's security (and it may just as possibly be external as several have pointed out), certianly they wouldn't want to tip off anyone involved who might be glancing at threads such as this as to what they are doing to stop them.

Well just a small thought or two from ignorant little me ^^

Acadia ( ) posted Thu, 26 July 2007 at 12:44 PM

Just another update.  I got the Rendo newsletter and didn't get any spam.

No further notications of wishlist items on sale though, so I can't confirm if the other day was a co-incidence or a potential fact.

So far as downloading freebies from here. Well, I'm the Queen of freebies (LOL), so I download loads of them.

**I only mentioned the free stuff area because many of them go to "outside" sites and that could be one way to set up trawlers or whatever they are called.

Not that I have any knowledge of how emails can be gotten. But that's an area of Rendo also. I'll bow out now.**

Quote - I know I have used Renderosity's sitemail to send email address to other members if I know they don't check their PMs.

It seems that this statement of mine, has been causing some confusion.  It seems that some people have been under the impression based on that statement that I have shared their email addresses with other members.

I would like to put that to rest publically.

I did not!

I would never share anything I know, knew or come to know about anyone of you or anything that takes place in private with anyone else.

What you see above is a typo, a simple typo that I missed because of my dyslexia.   My brain got ahead of my fingers and I typed something. I erased part of it, but evidently not all, and ended up combining 2 thoughts into one sentence and didn't notice.

What I meant to say above is that I use Renderosity's site mail to send both emails and IMs to fellow members.  When I send an IM to someone I almost always send them an email at the same time using the forms at the bottom of their homepage.

I hope that clears that up :)

So for me it seems that the spam comes the day I get Wishlist notifications.

I recently changed my email address, about 4 weeks ago.
Previously I did not have any email notifications enabled. This time when I added my new email address Ive inadvertedly enabled the notifications, Im also getting the Nigerian scam spams.

I guess the most simple answer is for me to turn off all notifications & see if the spam is still coming through, especially as no-one yet appears to be able to pin-point where the issue is at source.

I check the site daily anyway...lol :)

TerraDreamer ( ) posted Wed, 01 August 2007 at 12:53 PM

I feel so left out; not a spam to be had.

calyxa ( ) posted Wed, 01 August 2007 at 2:31 PM

the only way these "I got x from the forum and within 3 minutes got 2 spam messages" can possibly have any meaning at all is if the people reporting these are changing their email addresses here at the site each time.

even so, as soon as an address is "harvested," it gets put out there on a list shared by spammers. once it's harvested, it's compromised.

that site notices from rendo come in "at the same time" as spam is most likely because of how most email clients are set to "check for new mail every 5 minutes."

the most significant evidence I've read in this thread are from the people who can have "any string" at their domain as an email address, thus allowing for unique and cryptic addresses, and who have changed their address here multiple times to specific psuedo-random strings.  reading about those cases proves to me that somewhere out in the tubes, rendo-specific addresses are being grabbed.  Tom's scenario is a very likely explanation of that.

in short, there's not much to be done except at the client end.  if you've got an address specific to renderosity, then whitelist renderosity for that mailbox and reject any email that doesn't come directly from renderosity.

if your address goes through the tubes, someone has seen it.

TerraDreamer:

Hello, my old, forum friend. Hope you and yours are doing WELL these days.

After reading all the thread and given your expertise, would you be so kind as to offer any explanation as to why spam is hitting some of these members? Especially some of those that appear to have a great deal of computer knowledge and background.

It seems to have been awhile since a staffer has responded.  Maybe you have some input that could be helpful. If so, MUCH appreciated.

To Staff: Hello. Are you still looking into this matter or has it been decided that this is a dead issue so that members here will know that, at least. Thanks, in advance, for  your assistance. MUCH appreciated.

My best, as always .... TallPockets.

Natolii ( ) posted Thu, 02 August 2007 at 5:48 AM

Interesting theory Calyxa. Can you explain how an e-mail address that also goes through the tube going to yahoo, Comcast, Dotmed.com, Mass DoR, RI DoR and a few other places can get no spam? The e-mail effected here is only going through the tubes from Renderosity, period. No Outgoing mail, nothing.

Settings are the same, domain is the same, e-mail client is web-based... So you tell me? If that theory was true, then my other e-mail should be getting hit as well.

No spam with the newletter. Spam is confirmed with the notification of this thread only at this point...

calyxa ( ) posted Thu, 02 August 2007 at 11:17 AM

it's hawkfyr's theory, not mine.  he drew a diagram which convinced me, for all that's worth (which isn't a whole lot, I admit).

again, my main point with my post is that everyone who is adding to this thread with "got x from rendo, got 2 spam within 5 minutes" is wasting time.  the only way that'd be of any worth is if they were also changing their email address here to a unique semi-random string EACH TIME they receive a rendo notice.

most people, I'd imagine, don't have that ability.  I do, but I'm not going to be bothered to change it, as my spam filters already handle way more spam than I might attribute to yet another spammer who may have lifted my address from rendo traffic.

I had a unique E-mail in both cases...

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Thu, 02 August 2007 at 10:22 PM

That's what I was going to say Caly.

Refer to the diagram... Now Replace  the word "Daz" (in the diagram)...with any of the above mentioned sites...and you still have the same scenario.

Those sites...are not taking the same path that Rosity's E-Bots, Newsletters, (Notification of your choice) is taking.

It doesn't matter if you are only "Receiving" E-Mail" through those "Unique" accounts...

E-Mails left Rosity's servers on thier way to you.

Contained in that E-Mail header...Was your "Unique" E-Mail Address (Otherwise...how would it find it's way to you?)

Said Unique E-Mail Address...is harvested along that path.

They are NOT being harvested along the path(s) from those above mentioned sites.

There are several thousand...if not millions, of routers that E-Mail's travel through to get to it's final destination. (You).

I'd consider myself lucky for not getting spam harvested along the way from those other sites because I'd bet several pennies, that Rosity's E-Mails are not the only ones being harvested.

You lucked out.

Im getting 40-50 spam emails a day. Its soooooo time consuming to have to go through and delete them. Wish emails have something like the donotcall.gov   Life would be soooo much better! :)

Hi TerraDreamer,(LTNS)

I'd Imagine also, that many of the staff have been busy getting geared up for the annual SIGGRAPH convention in San Diego next week.

It takes a lot of logistical preparation in the preceding weeks to arrange for what could be considered "The Event Of the Year" in this industry.

Especially if you are going to have a booth that needs set up, and a staff to run it.

Considering that they attended last year (as did I), If they didn't have th logistics sorted already, I'd be wondering about their organization skills.

Me, I have to make sure the logistics are in place for the trade show my company attends and we are a smaller company that does several per year for in the medical industry.

I'm the jill of all trades.

Customer services, reception, HR, problem solving, Trade show logistics, Tax audits, order processing, accounts receivable, computer systems analysis and design, website management...

Someone just shoot me now.

Just a note that we are still compiling the information we get from members as well as researching some other things. So far there is nothing new to report. I will report as soon as I have new information.

And yes we have been very busy with the site redesign, getting everything worked out for Siggraph and some other internal items.
Even though we were at Siggraph last year, each year is different as far as our scheduling, focus, what we do in the booth, etc.. So our going in past years really doesn't cut the planning time down to nothing because its a new year.  Thank God our organizational skills are great or it would take even more time to plan as its a big event and our office staff is small.  Even up til today (the day before we leave) we are still tying up last minute details as that is par for the course for any large event that I've ever dealt with in all my years on this earth, lol

Thanks!!

Don't forget to Buy Cigarettes in Tennessee before going (Remember Last year?).

And you thought Boston was bad...Wait until you get to San Diego,

You'll be lucky to find a pack under 5 bucks.

And even luckier to find a place to smoke one...lol]

Seriously...But a carton before you leave.

I wish I was making this one especially...I had such a good time at the Sandy-eggo SIGGRAPH convention.(2004 IIRC)

The 2003 convention in San Antonio was another good one...I'm sure JennyK and Ta Kimble has told you about the adventures we shared with the DAZ staff on our River Walk broken down boat ride.

We laughed so hard that night that my jaws are still hurting...lol

Also...Stuie (Stewart Comgraph) will likely be there in San Diego (He lives there)...So be sure to visit Sea World if you can.He works/runs the Penguin Exhibit there, and is also one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.

I just wouldn't want to play Ruby with him...lol

Anyway...You all are going to have a riot there, and I wish I could join you this time.

The problem has definitely not gone away - even if I hoped so.  On August 8th, I took my 4th dedicated email address (belonging to my own domain) since April. Just a few minutes ago first spams arrived :((

While it is possibly to 'wash' the emails with external programs that is certainly not ideal. I get dozens of emails related to my merchandise among dozens of spam emails every day, and sometimes in a hurry a few important ones gets deleted as well.

Only Renderosity knows about this email (and the other 3). They have never been used for any other purpose.
