Hello,

Everytime I try to download from  ShareCG, the download hangs up and never allows the pop up window to function??? Is anyone else having these issues? Is it because I am still running IE6?

ThanX!

there are sometimes some bad files on sharecg. for example, some of that guy's road signs won't download for me - they just stall the browser.

FutureFantasyDesign ( ) posted Tue, 14 August 2007 at 6:59 PM

Hmmm...I had every single file stall! And I finally got Deskars great symbols to download, all 11 of them. But nothing else will. I thought it was me.

Was it all of the road sign items or just a few? If it was just a few, could you tell me which ones and I can check it in both browsers {even tho I loathe IE, I will fire it up to check :laugh:}

I would say that 99% of the files would not download for me. The only ones I could get to download are the items (*symbols) that Deskar had recently posted(*very cool).  I had downloaded a V4 Vest and it was a corrupted Rar file. I personally have had so many problems with Share CG, that i don't even bother with the download if I see it is them.

I was only there yesterday to see if i could find that vest and contact the creator.

I can not even access the sharecg.com domain.  I've tried FireFox; I've tried Internet Explorer, I've tried at home using my ISP's cable modem service; I've tried from my office via my business' network; I've tried in the morning; I've tried in the evening; I've tried late at night.  In every case it eventually times out.

More and more people are posting their items at ShareCG.  As it stands, that means more and more items I can not sample.

And Deskar, if I could get it to recognize my membership, I would have A) posted some freebies of my own, and B) definitly posted at thier forum! I even tried to call them and got a foriegn speaking man who could not answer my questions, (*about sharing) So there you are.

OK I use IE6.2 I think, I had the newest version before 7. Also I would gladly supply links if it didn't freeze my puter every time a file doesn't want to download. I am in Northern Nevada and connect with SBC global straight fast DSL/No yahoo on board here! So i long directly into IE, and surf from there.

Here is what happens when I try...

you hit the DOWNLOAD, and the small progress bar at the bottom of the page loads 1/3 of the way and freezes. It will not allow you to back out, close down the Share CG window or exit in any way. You must use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to close down IE altogether.

Which is a shame because I more posted here out of frustration about the download site and altho I RARELY use freebies. Some are so darn outstanding, they are "Must Haves"~! I am surprised that Deskars loaded without a hitch! But nothing else. I don't know if it is too many people accessing the site at once and thier servers aren't up to that load, but as redfern stated, it is arbetrary if and what file will work. That tells me it is them. Plus i just got a download from Mirandus-Arts, and that file was corrupt, she just e-mailed me I was the second one to tell her and yet over several hundred had no issues!

So I do not know if I am up to trying to go through every single link. It does say something that I am not the only one with an issue. It says that many may not think it is worth reporting OR that they never thought to report it here!!!

Lastly I signed up to join and never got access or acknowledgement! So that also tells me it is a site issue.

I got kinda freaked when I didn't get any kind of notification or complaints and started wondering what was wrong with them, hopefully it's just server issues.

Internet Explorer:  6.0.2900.2180

FireFox:  2.0.0.6

Even with the link provided, I still get the "time out" alert.

I've also tried "pinging" the site from the command prompt with the same result, Time outs for the time allotted.

Just to be clear, I was able to download from ShareCG as recently as July 3, 2007, but since that time, I can not access the base domain, let alone any individual members' pages.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your concern, and for bringing this to our attention.

Two things:

  1. We're looking into the download issue. It's bizarre, but our engineers are great and they'll hopefully fix it too.
  2. We started moderating, leading to some people's stuff being taken off the site, mostly because people are having trouble categorizing their items. Our site wasn't really made with Poser in mind... which probably led to some confusion. We've reversed the decision to moderate the way we have temporarily. (and can you guys give me some ideas for Poser categories, I'll think about it). Sorry for the scare. I think we'll end up moderating again, but in a different way.

Thanks,
The ShareCG Team

Thanks for dropping in! 👍

Im sure the members here can give you some ideas of some categories too, but I dont think they will all be in the Poser realm alone...

If you check out the freestuff section here, and click on the 'area to browse' you'll see what I mean..we have stuff from all over LOL

Maybe some general categories? { Textures,backgrounds,poses,models,materials,tubes,art,}

DreamWarrior ( ) posted Thu, 16 August 2007 at 1:47 AM

Yeah, I think general categories will help (thanks for dropping in, BTW!)

I've been thinking about some that SCG is missing and would be good, IMHO:
-Tubes/ clipart
-Wallpapers
-Backgrounds

Poser should have a main category ("Poser") and their own subcategories: poses, texture sets, characters, props, figures, scenes, lights, hair, clothing (those are the main and most used, so people can easily find what they're looking for).

And since we're suggesting... =)
There are a whole lot of things that could be shared too if they had their sections. Just to expand the horizons... Each niche has their own followers and could bring new people to the site.

-Photoshop Brushes
-Presets/ parameters of different CG programs (there is "plugins" already, parameters would be a great addition)
-Vectors
-Icons
-Stock photography

just to name a few.

Thank you again!
Barb

Neyjour ( ) posted Thu, 16 August 2007 at 2:03 AM

Some new categories and such would be terrific!  I'll admit that I've been kinda confused as to where to place some of my freebies, and I've noticed that others have too.

A couple new main sections (like you have for 3D Models, Textures, etc) might be the easiest way to sort out the confusion.  For example:

3D Model Add-Ons

Format:
~All
~3ds Max
~Bryce
~Cinema 4D
~Poser
~Etc., etc...

Categories:
~Clothing
~Hair
~Morphs
~Presets
~Poses
~Props
~Skin Textures
~Etc., etc.

This would get the stuff like Poser morphs and clothing out of the 3D Models section.  Yeah, morphs are for 3D Models, but when I go there I expect to see models I can download and use as stand-alones.  Ya know?  The clothing....well, yes, those are models, but not stand-alone stuff.  You need to own the Poser figures to use them, so add-ons would be more appropriate I think.

Also, textures for Poser clothing seem to be spread out all over the place...in the 3D Models section, the Textures and the Materials.  To me, they don't really belong in any of those places.  To me, textures should be .jpg stuff like stone, grass, liquid, textile, etc.  And Materials is more for "shader" type materials of the previous things, but that can be applied to anything.  Textures requiring that you have specific models, figures and clothing just shouldn't be there.  I'm sure non-Poser users would be happy to see them disappear from those sections and go into their own section.

Presets could be for stuff like lights, camera, sky, atmosphere, etc.  Although, maybe those would require their own section?  They don't really fit with "3D Models"...they're more like add-ons for the actual programs...

Anyway, just some suggestions!  I really love ShareCG and I think it would be wonderful if everything was organized a bit better.  I've been holding off on uploading some stuff because I really have no idea where to put it and how to categorize it.  :P

Neyjour ( ) posted Thu, 16 August 2007 at 2:22 AM

Or...like DreamWarrior said, just give Poser it's own section.  That would solve the problem!  hehe!  :P

Oh yes, ditto as well to backgrounds!  I've been sticking mine in the textures section because...well, there's no place else to put them.  Heh. :P  I think a new section for 2D Resources (which should really be separate from the textures since they take up a long list of their own categories) is badly needed.  To expand on DreamWarrior's list:

Actions
Backgrounds

Brushes
Filters
Clip Art
Fonts
Icons
Misc.
Overlays
*
***Plugins
Scripts
Stock Photos
Tubes
Vectors
Wallpaper

And for this section, add all the major programs to the list of Formats: Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, Illustrator, Dogwaffle, Miscellaneous/Other, etc., etc.

Absolutely agree with ALL the comments made above. CG come in many forms and the cgshare site leaves us all confused about categorisation. There is really no category for 2D items as seen in the Renderosity Marketplace. Renderosity have thier categories well sorted and it is clear to all where freebies should go!!!
I had much of my hard  work removed last night and got multiple emails from CGshare to tell me after the fact!!!
All this activity makes me (and others) feel like naughty schoolchildren. As I said on the ShareCG  forum, I am a retired lecturer...age 58 years!!.....I am too old for all this nonsense. It is rather like me refusing to mark student assignments when they placed them in the wrong pigeon hole!!
Surely  Renderosity freebies and sharecg is all about sharing passions with others. If not, then I see no point in it all. If a freebie is not wanted on a site, then it would be a simple job to inform the uploader politely and all of this mess could be avoided. There is enough strife in the world without some of the nastiness and unprofessionalism I have seen around.
Why do we bother at all?????

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses.

Adding categories is incredibly difficult; If at all possible, we don't want to expand the top bar, but it looks like we're going to have to.

Over the next day or so, we'll be looking into new category options. After we decide on which categories we think are most needed, we'll begin moderating again. Only this time, instead of moderating to reject miscategorized items, I guess we'll try and re-categorize some items (which, by the way, is an engineering feat). We'll see how that goes.

Also, what happened with the site performance issues? I tried frantically to recreate the problem to no avail. Is this still an issue for people?

Thanks,
The ShareCG Team

Hi Pauline,

I hope you have gotten an e-mail from us. Let me make something public, though: we apologize. We thought we had to "clean up the site" by deactivating things that were miscategorized, and that was clearly misguided. Everything is restored. We're working on building better categories.

Personally I won't use this site any longer, and I will politely ask the great vendors here if they could post thier freebies on a site that works. I tried again today to download and 5 out of 5 times I had to exit via Ctrl/Alt/Delete!!!

I had no idea when I started this thread how many are having issues with this site, and I think there would have been more people complaining hereif they knew about the Freebie Forum!

This is only one opinion, confirmed and corroborated by many.

Backwardness persists: using Opera (the crankiest browser available), CGShare loads blazing fast, and downloads fine. It doesn't even make the tables jumble up. And this on Earthlink, too! Took me a minute to recognize the place.. downloaded some great Cinema shaders from all over the world there. Hope the experts figure out what's making it hang. It could be a pop-up, or blocker thereof, or a bad URL on an ad..

FutureFantasyDesign ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 10:54 AM

Just to clarify, I have the fastest DSL in the offering from SBC, and because I have a business I do not go thru Yahoo, and or any other company to connect to the internet (*I have used Earthlink years ago, nice to hear they are still excellant!) I have a direct link. Plus because I am an artist and do not believe in any type of censorship, my setting are on 100% access to nudity, violence and so on. I accept session cookies. I have no issues with any other site I download from. Neither would I or have made frivilous reports, it is not good business.

I only posted because of the issues I have been experiencing. And I would want to know if people could not download my items offerred. Since i am only one person, if i send an IM to a person requesting a direct file because of a problem, then it is no biggie generally. But if EVERYONE had to do so, well you see what I am saying. If I *one person, is having issues. And four or five others post here that they ALSO have issues. Well it isn't a "One Off" problem any longer!

I am happy that many have had no issues..but many have. If these issues were not to be reported and confirmed. Then many would be possibly thinking it is thier computer and/or just forgo trying to do something to fix it. If ShareCG wants to IM me here, and we can independantly test run the site together I am open for this. But this thread was only started to find out why this is happening, and if I was alone in my inability to access files over there.

So far as I can see people are not having any problems downloading the things that Burpee and I put up which are all zip files.
You can comment on the downloads. Maybe if you put a comment there the person who uploaded what you are trying to download will check it out for you. I guess its always possible that their upload was faulty.

Hi everyone, first off I wanted to say that my cat did survive the surgery and is home recovering now! :)

Bea...did you read the entire thread? If you had done so, you would have read that I did try to sign up and got no confirmation and when I tried to contact them I was consistantly blocked from doing so. That is why I posted over here to begin with. IF you had read some of my original remarks you would have read this from myself ..."Lastly I signed up to join and never got access or acknowledgement! So that also tells me it is a site issue". I did try to join. And since it freezes my 'puter everytime I visit the site. So I posted here.

Believe me I do think it should be taken to the source whenever possible. But that is not always the case. And as others have mentioned, if this is a problem for many, then it is a site issue. I see that ShareCG has responded here and also said they knew there were "Some" issues. Weither or not they were this exactly has not been made crystal, but they should be aware of it by now and will hopefully fix it soon. Because I really want the great things that Bogwoppett has up and that is a fact! :)

Heres hoping everyone has a great day! ;)
