Subject: Photography Challenge...

olivier158 ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2007 at 3:02 AM · edited Wed, 11 December 2024 at 4:58 AM

Hello everyone,

I propose you a challenge : Buy a little 'one use' camera (i don't know the word in english lol you know that kind of camera you use just one time with the film in it, and go trash after developping).

So buy one of this (about 6€), thake shots in your city (36/24 views) choose the best pics (let's say 5 pics) and scan them (you can surely found someone in your neighbourhood with a flat bed scan).

And so, let's see what we can do with a very minimalistic hardware ! Colors or Black&White ;o)
I'm sure our hardware is really not important, let's work our eyes :oD

What do you think ???

Dear TwoPynts, Bibby, Tom, Short Ribs, Girsempa, Janis, Zorg, Mayda and all the others great photographers i cannot type here because too long lolllllll, I hope to hear you :oD

See ya my friends !
Olivier

Oooh, now that's a great challenge Olivier and will be very interesting to see what everyone can produce with the low end stuff (oh, we just call them disposable cameras!)

Will postwork be allowed after scanning??  Because I fear that is where some people really excel and can make an "ordinary" picture into a great piece of artwork!

I'll go buy one later today or tomorrow and then see if I can get into town for some shots.

Hugs

Dear Chrissy,

I propose to limit postwork has what can be done in darkroom (level, brightness, contrast).

See you
Olivier

short_ribs ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2007 at 4:38 AM · edited Tue, 21 August 2007 at 4:40 AM

This sounds like a pretty fun one mate specially seeing I could do it all in the darkroom but developing color isn't something I've done yet and form what I know of it it's pretty hard... but 1. I dont have the money for a disposable camera and 2. the scanning bit would hinder me and 3rdly time.... though I'd sooo love to do it. (might sort something out though ;) Anyway I've just done some work prints from my first and second B&W film would love to show them but the scanner I have is that bad that it's not worth trying to use.... Great to see you encouraging such activities, I say thing cause I'm loving the darkroom.... 😉

Dear Short Ribs,
for your first problem, i offer you a disposable camera, and i will pos it tomorrow to new zealands :OD
and for the second, send me the negatives, and i'll scan it for you :oD

... i'm not joking lol

short_ribs ( ) posted Tue, 21 August 2007 at 5:03 AM

LOL I'm sure there's an easier way to do so I'm testing my terrible scanner now n will share some pics here if I may... but yeah I'll try work something out.

Hi,

This is a great idea, i'm in.
It is always said that pictures are taken by the photographer, not the camera, ... let's see how we can handle that.

Mods can this be made into a forum challenge if Olivier is OK with that ?

It would mean there is a place to post our pics and a time to do it.

Sounds like a definite challenge.....I'm game!!!

olivier158 ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 12:04 PM

ha .. nice idea but .. how to say that : it is not a real challenge ! it's a challenge against yourself !

i mean, there is nohing to win, the goal is not to compare with others to know who make the nicest picture.
The goal is : let's see what we (rr photographers) we can do without hitech, just with our eye and the minimum of hardware.

So, if modos or others want it to be a real challenge, ok.. but it's really not the goal.
Why not create a sticky entry in the forum to post the results and talk about it ?

olivier

olivier158 ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 12:04 PM

thank for participating Joe !

:oD

BibbyBear ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 12:12 PM

Yeah, I confess - I'm a little scared off by all the big names here in RendoLand that have said they are going to join in and if it becomes a "real" challenge.... show me the door LOL!!

I liked the idea of it from the start where we could just post a pic and have others comment on it with regards to compo, light, POV etc., but I fear anything I might put in (which is why I never participate in forum challenges!) will just get lost amongst the many great photographers here.

I'm watching the thread with interest though - at least it proves it was a great idea in the first place Olivier.

Don't look at this as a competition....more of a LEARNING experience in my book!

You'll gain new insight for sure!

i agree with you joe :oD

thundering1 ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 12:45 PM

Yeah, don't worry BibbyBear - these cameras have no light meters, no autofocus, no zoom, no exposure compensation - it's just a box with a plastic bubble for a lens.

Nothing anyone posts here can be of any real technical achievement or prowess. Just seeing what someone come up with given the most unforgiving equipment.

I'm looking forward to seeing more.
BTW - cool pics Short_Ribs!

BibbyBear ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 12:46 PM

I understand that Joe, but what I have found in previous forum threads where we can upload our shots for one reason or another, (without any bitterness intended here) photographers at my low level tend to get a quick "oh nice shot" type of comment and everyone ends up talking about all the great ones - yes, I can learn from what all the others have uploaded, but I don't need to feel totally embarrassed at my own attempt in the process as this is and can be, a little disheartening - perhaps why generally, only the same great photographers post to these threads whilst us "learners" sit in the wings and watch.

This seriously isn't a dig, just a personal experience I have felt sometimes and I can make a fool of myself in my own gallery LOL!! At least the good photographers rarely come in there to have a laugh (sorry, I meant look!!)

Please note - there is a smile on my face through all of this, so no-one misread my words at all.

L8RDAZE ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 1:13 PM

Totally understand where you're comin' from Chrissy!  Been there... believe me.   It takes alot to put yourself  "out there" at times....even when you REALLY want to.  One thing I've learned, is that you need to leave your personal "comfort zone"  to truly learn and grow.   Again, we'll all be on the same "playing field" so to speak here and  the whole idea behind this "exercise" is to get back to the ROOTs of photography, work within certain limits and see what YOU can come up with.

I might suggest instead of just one STICKY thread, that we  post a NEW thread for  each member participating.  Tthis way, no one gets lost in a huge thread and eachs persons images remain the FOCUS of THAT discussion.

Joe

thundering1 ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 1:53 PM

I completely understand BibbyBear - but don't worry at ALL - not kidding.

As the beginning of this thread almost sounds like a quality quest, I was actually thinking of going in a different route - since the cameras have got crappy everything as far as a tool, USE it!

As corny as it sounds, I was trying to think of a fun way to photograph my feet in front of stuff (window, blocking the TV, blocking my wife ;-), more funny stuff, get it?). I might try some form of texture shot, landscape, etc., but don't expect ANY form of masterpiece from me ;-)

Just have fun and we'll see what we come up with.

TwoPynts ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 2:05 PM · edited Wed, 22 August 2007 at 2:05 PM

Okay folks, made it a sticky thread. Olivier doesn't sound like his goal is to make this an 'official' challenge so why don't we approach it in that light. Can I suggest that digital point and shoot cameras be allowed too, with an honor system that each person take no more than 36 images in AUTO mode, and no other postwork besides B&W conversion and cropping allowed? Just a thought for those with no scanning capability.

Kort Kramer - Kramer Kreations

Onslow ( ) posted Wed, 22 August 2007 at 3:57 PM

Sorry I in no way meant to introduce a competitive element to this - I only suggested it so the thread would stay around for when pics were posted.  I whole heartedley back the spirit in which Olivier started this thread.
I don't have scanning facilities I intended to get the supermarket processors to put it on CD for me, if not that then I would take a macro shot of the print and post that. I think it should stay as disposable film cameras.

Oh don't worry about apologising Richard, I was just running scared in the face of all you great photographers who could probably still come up with better results on a disposable than I could on the new Canon 1Mk III (or whatever that new fancy several thousand pounds worth of camera is called LOL!)

I'll still have a go and give everyone a good laugh, maybe V can help me on Saturday in Bristol to advise on what best to do with my little £4.99 camera!!

And yes, mine will be put onto disk at Asda's then uploaded - mind you, I've had problems with terrible noise from their scanner in the past??!!

I didn't mean to sound negative - just ignore me.... I often find myself in the state of confusion, but it's OK, they know me there!!!

thank you very much Kort ! great idea to stick it !
i'm ok with digital, just don't forget to tell it when it's posted ;o) (i understand scanning is not easy for everyone, but when developing, you can ask the shop to scan it for you)

no prob onslow ;o) stay in that spirit, it willl be a great experience.

dear chrissy, yes, there are some great photographers, some beginners, some semi-pros & pros. But we are all passioned people by the picture, the image... we are friend and we are playing together :oD So, trust in you ;o) it will be great i'm sure :oD

So, Kort, how do you think we can post 5 pics by member and talk about it ? Do you have idea my friend ? What is possible to be sure everybody can have a good and constructive approach of a critique ?

thanks thanks thanks everybody for participating :oD

Olivier

TwoPynts ( ) posted Thu, 23 August 2007 at 10:53 AM

I think 5 photos by a member would be fine. My thoughts are that having them all in this thread may be a bit cumbersome. Perhaps we could present them in a collage in our galleries, all 5 at once on a simple white or black background. We could then post a link to the image from here and discuss here or in the comments beneath the images (I think that would work best). Or we could use a service like photobucket.com to host the images for posting and discussion in this thread. What do you think?

Kort Kramer - Kramer Kreations

olivier158 ( ) posted Thu, 23 August 2007 at 2:45 PM

yep 5 pics is great, and i agree, everything here will be hard to see and discuss.

good idea ! create a collage of five pics and post it in our respective gallery. So we can put comments directly on it, and have further discussions here !

So, can you create a very first entry in this thread (sticky one) where we can put names & links of members who are posting their collage ? I know it's possible in classic forum. Surely here, no Kort ?? Like this, everybody can follow the challenge without browsing the entire thread.

olivier

Well well well Señor Olivier

You make me to remember my last time with my old camera, my old canon, buy a film and took some pictures. My weather is good today, I had some clouds, so, no much lighting.  I run after a bus (a little more and I make a kiss at the door ), I gone in the darkroom of a good friend, who leave me too his scaner... And he ask me " why do you don't take your Nikon? It's for Señor Olivier, a other challenge..." So, now, your name is Señor Olivier hahahahaha...
I think on these pictures, I don't give a lot of time like is necesary because I have some trouble with the black...

Now, you have my contribution of your challenge.. Say me what you think 😄

olivier158 ( ) posted Mon, 27 August 2007 at 4:17 PM

héhé ! I am senor Olivier :oD yeah :o) cool :oD

.. here is your picture darling ! You can post five you know ? ;o)

i really like the second one, really nice approach of bw scenography. The quality of the pictures is impressive for a single-use camera ! lol but now the camera is in the trash ;o)

Your approach of the subect is very different from your RR pictures. I feel more 'Valou's soul' in these pictures (i hope i don't hurt or offend when i'm saying this).

As you can see compo and atmoshpere are here, even if you use cheap camera.

The first one is intersting too because of light contrasts everywhere in he picture, the framing is unusual. The third too, unusual but nice too.

Globally, the pictures are very interesting, i hope you felt something different in his experience. It is very important to know YOUR feeling about this Valou :o)

Thanks very much for your participation :o) other pics ?

See ya :o)

When you post the collage in your gallery, send me a link and I will add it to the list below.
