I feel so stupid, because I had this exact same problem in other apps... go to render and the transparent portions are coming out opaque... and I can't remember how it was fixed, much less how to apply the principal in modo.  So hopefully someone with more experience can help me out.

Can anyone tell me what settings I need to tweak?  Or is it something to do with lighting?

I'm not familiar enough with Modo to give you an educated answer myself but about 10 seconds with Google and I got this link which may be of help:

It turned out I had my diffusion color set way too high, I think.  thanks anyhoo.
