Subject: crash!!!!!!!!

Im using vue 2.1 Is there a limit to polygon count on imported models? When I load a poser charactor it loads okay except if the figure has like 750000 polygons if you move it or try to apply materials the program crashes. Anyone run into this problem I think I will get vue4 when it comes out but with nothing but 2.1 to compare it to ...If the polygon count is a issue then maybe I will have to pass it up.

How much memory do you have in your system. 750000 polygon model is going to bring most machines to it's knees. I have just loaded one of my most detailed models I have got up (485 objects, 143828 polygons) to check it's polygon count. Even if you are running 128MB RAM and it is a typo (and should read 75000 polygons), you are going to come acrosss memory issues. Make sure all background tasks, except Systray and Explorer are turned off. The poly count is almost certainly a memory issue with a model that size... Just to make you happier about an upgrade to Vue4, I can assure you that the polygon count is not an issue with Vue3.1 ;o) Hope that helps, Martin

The suggested "limit" on polygons is 1 million, so if you meant 75,000 or 750,000 you're still well under the "limit". The actual limit, however, is how much can your system support. The faster your processor and the more RAM you have, the more advantage you have. Version 3.1 is more stable at handling large numbers but even there, the same kind of "limit" applies (relative to system support), although performance difficulties are more noticeably related to higher bytes rather than polygons. You can try out the v.3 demo to see how it works without having to upgrade to it. :)

Yes I meant 75000 polygons I loaded victoria2 and the updo hair It loaded okay but when you play with it down the program goes.....I think that it is probably my system since I am way below the required amount of ram and cpu speed I was just asking if someone had come across the problem with later versions and faster computers ...thanks I will probably get vue4

Don't sweat it glennjan...if you could only see what I put my computer thru in the name of artwork...LOL. I always yearn for bigger, Faster, BETTER! What a shame that I'm not independently wealthy :). You know, about the cheapest upgrade you can give to your computer is an extra stick of ram. You'd be amazed at what a difference it makes. Of course, you'll always wind up overstressing your computer from time to time! :) Laurie

LOL glennjan :D With Vicky 2, Updo Hair and the new textures you may as well be playing with 750000 polygons. I feel for you...some 3D models where just made for the benefit of RAM manufacturers, and Vicky 2 is one of them LOL! Regards, Cheers

Hmmm...is she really that bad on memory? I'll have to finally make something with her and try that out! Now I wonder how MY computer is gonna handle her! LOL. Laurie

glennjan ( ) posted Sun, 27 May 2001 at 8:21 PM

I dont know if shes that bad or not ...hi res, more complex, more ram and faster cpu....I am not really complaining I have a 200mhz with 128ram and I can load everything in poser and until now this is the only prob I have had (how fast and how much ram!!! snicker snicker) okay so I need a new system...as soon as I decide what to get I will ...unless vue4 gets my cash first lol

Upgrading Vue may be the real answer for you (and a lot cheaper than a whole new system). I'm running v.3.1 at 200 mhz with 64 mb RAM. I've imported Michael with props and clothing okay, and most of my scenes are well over 100,000 polygons. What brought my system to a crawl was Laurie's (lovely but huge) spring wreath model! When Laurie says she wants it bigger and better, she ain't kidding! LOL -- The wreath model is over 25 MB! I don't remember the polygon count, but as I mentioned above, v.3.1 doesn't seem troubled by high polygons the way v.2.1 was. And note: although it slowed things way down for me, it wasn't crashing outright. After bringing in the model and noticing the slowdown, I just had to leave plenty of time between changing focus or making a motion. I remember Guitta explaining her "Penguins" image being enormous in bytes. She was having to wait about ten minutes between motions! That was also with 3.1.

yeah its cheaper but I was planning to get a new system anyways ...just felt like whining about it but now after seeing that your running on a system comparable to mine I feel great .....seemed like everyone was running on 1ghz or better with 512 megs of ram and saying it was still too slow LOL...oops gotta go before the wife sees that Im gonna be going on a spending spree real soon.....heh heh

Varian ( ) posted Mon, 28 May 2001 at 1:04 AM

Oh hey, what I meant to say is that you better get that new system really soon, especially if you want to be able to produce anything. The faster the processor, the better off you'll be; better aim for about 12 or 16 ghz. And don't forget the RAM, lots and lots of RAM is essential! Get yourself started with about 120 Gb, and then you can always add more later as needed. :-) (There, show that to your wife! Then show her the system you actually want. She'll be so pleased that you're planning to spend so much less. LOL!)

I could get by with 120 Gb of ram but ...what can I say Im greedy ;)
