Subject: Freebie: New Replacement Wood materials for Vue SolidGrowth trees

dburdick ( ) posted Wed, 29 August 2007 at 3:12 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:53 PM

I was creating some closeup and medium range renders using the Standard Vue SolidGrowth Trees and began to realize that there are some problems with the basic wood trunk and bark materials. Some of these problems are due to how the basic materials are mapped while others require significant improvements to create a more realistic result.  So I ended up re-creating the wood materials for the entire basic Vue Tree collection. The materials are 100% procedural and distortion free.  They even look decent when rendering at close range. Here's a link showing a comparison of the original versus revised materials (original on the left, new on the right):

Here's a download link to a zip file containing the new materials:

Enjoy!

I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft

Will these automatically be used, or do you have to manually replace them?

Great looking stuff, butthe cherry tree almost looks a little "tiled" to me

Good catch - fixed and re-uploaded.

They won't automatically be reused, you need to manually load them.  I've contacted the E-on folks about offering these as standard materials.

Between this, the new lush plant set and the TerraPak toolkit it feels like my birthday has come a few weeks early this year.  Thanks I can't wait to have a play later :-)

Very nice mats and a real improvement over what are (now) quite obviously inferior Vue materials. Thank you very much for these.

"They won't automatically be reused, you need to manually load them. I've contacted the E-on folks about offering these as standard materials." If I rename them to the names of the eon files, and replace the eon folder (just saving the eon ones under a different name to use for toon scenes), would your new textures load automatically in my ecos? Love esther

Esther,

Yes.  You can load in a standard Vue Tree, replace the wood mats with the new ones, and then save the tree species.  I have created a new folder on may machine with the new wood-based tree species.

Gareee ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2007 at 11:39 AM

can you then use those to replace the originals, so they are loaded, instead of the originals?

I only have two things to say to you, mister....

WOW!  and  THANKS!!

dburdick ( ) posted Mon, 03 September 2007 at 6:29 PM

Yes.  Just re-save the tree as a new species with the new mats to another folder.  Then you can just load them in anytime you want and they will contain the new mats.

Ok, so change the mats, resaved them as new trees, and replace the original tree files with these new ones, properly renamed?

Just wanna make sure I get it right befor mucking about.
