Subject: Is there any size limitation on the runtime folder?

neurocyber ( ) posted Tue, 29 May 2001 at 3:14 AM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 10:06 AM

My runtime folder has bloated to almost 800 Mbs. Should I expect trouble with Poser 4 if it gets any bigger? Is there any limit? Any one encounter trouble in this area?

800 MByte !!! - oh you're really small - mine is about 4 Gigabyte (and a lot n't copied in there - lol) Well - fun aside ... I noticed (especially in my poses-folder) a system-slowdown when there are to many folders.

Gee, and here I was thinking mine was excessive for hitting 1 gig before I backed it all up and got rid of what I don't usually use...

Mine just topped the 8gig mark and no problems so sit back, relax and fill er up! :)

~9.8 Gig and still growing.. about the only limit is the hard drive space and the system 8 ) Cheers

I am not sure what size my runtime folder is but the only slowdown I have seen is also when I loaded up the pose folder with tons of pose folders it seemed to slow things down a little but only when I access that folder.

Mine is around 3.7gb and doesn't affect poser, but I did notice the pose folder slowdown. However, there's an easy way around that. If you copy all your poses to a new location on the hard drive, or write them to cd, then use Poser Explorer from Yarp (Seno Software http://lcrepiliere.free.fr/) to "explore" the poses folders to find the pose you want. Right click over the pose and "copy" it to a temp pose directory. Every couple of days or so, delete the poses out of that temp directory. No slow down, same with textures it works for those too. Though some regularly used character textures need to be where Poser can get at them easily. Once I discovered this little function of Poser Explorer, i use it for almost everything, from textures to characters to pose files. It's saved time, saved Poser slugging when it access the textures/props/poses folders and kept my Poser directory and drive nice and tidy. Just a thought. :)

Questor, you've got it that's the way I use it too. My Poser Runtime directory is only 600 Mo and my Poses never bother me. As you said there's one disturbing thing, you've got to clean it up yourself. I'm thinking on a new feature which will do the job for you, I'm also thinking on a plugin which will quickly copy all files (CR2, OBJ, texture) in proper directory and in a few cliks, I mean one ;)) I plan to make this for September. Its called "PC Installer" plugin for P3dO in regard with MartinC Mac Installer. Yarp

Yarp: Not sure how you'd make that work. I assume you'd need to read the reference information in the cr2 for the obj/texture location and then install the files to that location creating directories as required, same for textures. But for the plugin to work fully - as in install an item for use and uninstall it when finished with, it would also need to keep an install log. Even if that log is plain text it could grow to a considerable size depending on how much information is stored and for how long and whether the size/length of time is user configurable. It couldn't be an automatic process unless the plugin could "detect" the location of Poser (possibly a simple Poser.exe search might do) because there are awkward people out there like me who don't have Poser installed in the usual location. Nice idea, and I hope you get it to work as that would be a really neat feature. :) Being able to install all files for something then remove them again following that use would save me hours in drive clean up time, and a lot of space.

Correct I'll read the CR2, and I'll keep an install log but a compressed log file is not that big, provided you clear it from time to time. Anyway I copy your remarks and will take them into acount when I'll do the plug. P3dO already looks for Poser directory and finds it fine. It will save hours for sure if not more. PC Installer is the third to come, I'll sure do it soon. 1.4.4 Vue d'esprit and AWK in June, 1.4.5 Zip Explorer in July, August vacation on Sea... er See3d ;)), 1.4.6 PC Installer in September. 1.4.4 is nearly finished, I'm on due time. I work harder for 2 months and I'm accelerating ;))

Wow. 9.8 Gig, 8.5 Gig, 3.7 Gig, 1.5 Gig! I thought 800Mbs was a lot. Looks like I've got a long way to go before I need to wory. Thanks for all the responses. :)
