Could you maybe make one in Terragen?
Here is a mountain. It's not Mount Fuji, but maybe it will work for you with some post work or texturing?

Thank you both for your replies. Nice link acadia, has some other nice thing too I see :o)
bB, that is what I have tried before..all i end up with is something looking more like a chia pet..lol
I am hoping someone a bit skilled with those apps can maybe do it.. Nice render too, wish I knew the person that did it..hehe
I do have Bryce 6.1, but it won't export anyting but images, and avi I think..
I tried Terragen also..we did not play well
This may sound a bit silly, but I want to try to keep some authentism as not to show any disrespect to the people of Japan. It is part of a story I am making about the sakura :o)
thanks dvlenk, but that is the problem, Bryce can not export and obj, etc..it is not a modeler..
I mean yes i could create in Bryce then animate in Bryce..and Bryce makes nice "pictures" but it can be a pain, and renders are slowwww..
I want to be able to use it in another program either CyberMotion 3D , or another because they renders animations much faster :o)
I'm not tryng to be lazy, I just can't seem to get the hang of all that DEM, Gt err sumthin stuff. Us older people tend not to have a lot of patience..LOL
Attached Link: TerraBrush
Oh by the way..this link is to a nice little terrain tool..works with terragen also..and it is free :o)Just wish it had more editing features. maybe in the future it will.
It starts in German, but you can select English from the eidt menu..
Wish more artsts / modelers would embrace nature beauty and stuff..then just more girls in thongs..LOL
Repeat, Bryce 6.1 can export anything, except metaball constructs.
Terrains:
You can export other things too, as long as there's no metaballs. Metaballs export as spheres and lose all of their meta properties.

hmm, was not aware of that, dvlenk...lemme check..I still don't know all the in and out of Bryce new..just the older versions :o)
The one I had found at TurboSquid was .max anyhow, unlikely I will spend $3000+ for max just to play with it..
I am sure most folks from Japan would say it is not correct anyhow (the peak is too high)..I have seen lots of photos of Fuji and this isn't it..not to mention the price tag..$250..geez
Attached Link: My attempt
This is my lame attempt at Mt. Fuji..close .. but no door prize..LLI made it in TerraBrush, then dropped it into CyberMotion 3D to texture it..
Making the mesh and exporting as obj took about umm 30 seconds
Importing it into CyMo..about 45 seconds
rendering 4 minutes, 45 seconds..coz I set anti-alias high to smooth it out :o)
Just for anyone interested.. CyMo has a free demo w/ full functions..just makes a watermark on the unregistered version outputs
http://www.3d-designer.com
It costs $149.00 USD to register..upgrades after $55.00 USD..usually there are updates from time to time also..they are free of course.
Has some nice features..worth the time to just check it out I think :o)
don't know, bB.. Zbrush is wayyy out of my price league .. lol
I think dv was talking about exporting the map..
I still don't think it can export an obj..or that kind of stuff..of course the export object is on the list..but it never lights up..must have been something on Fractal, Corel, or whomever had it that day..had on the "to do" list. Have not seen Daz make any effort that direction.
Bryce eats more than it spits out I think..sort of like PovRay does :o)
Not mad or anything; but I'm only going to say it one more time, at least in this thread:
Bryce 6 can export ANYTHING except metaball constructs.
I've been exporting terrains and symlats from Bryce since Version 4 at least. AFAIK, Bryce could always export terrains and symlats.
Br6 was the first version that could export primitives and booleans.
'E' (edit mesh), then ctrl+d for other stuff. Silly command; but there it is.
^ I just checked, B5 and Br5.5 can export imported meshes that way too; but not primitives or booleans.
Primitive boolean objects in BR6 have to be 'C'ollapsed before exporting, at which point they are meshes and the export object is enabled in the file list. Boolean meshes are always inefficient, though; lots of wasted polys and bad topology. Not really worth the effort, if you ask me.
Still no metaball exports, which means no tree exports. Until metaballs can be collapsed to meshes, they won't export. Maybe Br7 will have it, or 8.

Can you say that again one more time? I just need to hear again, ...and uh..., maybe do it in ALL CAPS again too? Just make sure "ANYTHING" sinks in. hehehehehehhehehe -^ That is seriously cool! I want Mount Fuji now too! ^^ We just have to score a beautiful DEM and WALA! Bryce Magic! ^^ Thanks for the instructions. ^^ bB
the only DEM I've been able to find for Mt Fuji is a SRTM one with a nasty hole in one side where the mountain cast a shadow

I have tried them all I think..oh and by the way Bryce could not read most ot them..
The lame excuse was "oh, it does not support the newer DEM files yet"
Got all kinds of maps too..takes a longgg time gathering them on dialup, and I have yet to find 2 programs that can agree what map is right or wrong. Of course they all make chia pet scenes real good..
I tried the export ANYTHING..it didn't export anything..would you mind putting that in a step by step format? :o)
Oh well, one way or another I am going to figure this out (photo by photo. 0r is that stone by stone?)..and when I do...will be free to anyone else that wants it :o)
I fail to see the problem here.
If the file is in the wrong format for Bryce, convert it; or use a program that supports the file format in the first place. It's like trying to open a .jpg with Notepad then complaining because Notepad doesn't support .jpg files.
Step by Step Terrain Export Instructions:
I've never had any trouble w/ 'chia pets' either. I use DEMs in Bryce, Carrara, and Terragen.
I'd guess that either your DEMs suck (resolution wise) or you are adding too much height.
DEMs are, of course, scaled and if you change the scaling ratios too much, then there is problems...
This one is scaled to 3 times the height it should be. You can see the pixels starting to bump out down on the bottom, where it is close to the camera. If I were to scale to, say 30 times, it's right height, then it would look like a chia pet, I suppose.

No problem, just wanted a little more detailed how-to.
I amsure Bryce is installed just fine, and it was at the Daz forum I was told that Bryce does not support some newer tyoe DEMs, and I do not know where to find "old" DEMs,
By the way what size are your DEMs.. 256 X 256, 512 X 512, or? Seems they come in lots of sizes, from different sources nowadays.
Bryce does quite well for me in the applications I need it for.. i/e importing stuff from Daz Studio, etc.. It is not a bad prgram, but i really do not think it was meant for this type of project.
I don't use Carrara, or plan to. I just have the basic Carrara,,and that's enough to suit me.
Don't know if the DEMS "suck" would have to ask the space administration about that.
And yes you are right there are other landscape softwares about.
Anyhow thanks for the tips :o)

USGS DEM archives.
Not complete; but hundreds. Organized in alphabetical directories.
Unzip the .gz files and add a .dem extension to the end of the filename.
3DEM also can use any of the formats shown in the attached pic.

Yeah, you can edit the DEM like any other terrain. The DEM was converted to a normal terrain on import.
Quote - ...Can you open a DEM in photoshop, retouch, save as a jpg, and import the jpg for as Bryce terrain?
I don't think Photoshop opens DEMs, unless there is a plug-in around; at least my version (CS) doesn't.
You can go into the terrain editor, click on the 'pictures' tab in the editing tools and copy the image from the first window.
Then create a new document (use greyscale, if it doesn't default to that) in Photoshop 'from clipboard' and paste the the terrain image into it. Then you can edit the greyscale image in Photoshop, press ctrl+a (select all) then ctrl+c(copy selection), go back to the terrain editor, paste.
You don't have to save/load images, you can just use the clipboard to transfer between Photoshop and Bryce w/ copy/paste. You don't even have to leave the terrain editor; unless you want to do a quick preview render to check out results.
When you do this, paste the photoshop manip. into both image slots in the terrain editor ('pictures' tab); unless you want to blend the DEM image with something else.

Hi all,
I am looking for a model of Mt Fuji (probably the most famous volcanic mountain in Japan).
I just need the mesh of it only. not the surrounding terrain, etc..I can texture it myself how I want it..
I saw one at TurboSquid at a rediculous price (of course) and to be honest it really did not look very authentic.
I have tried with no luck doing that USGS stuff, and gave up.. lol
Just need it either obj, or 3ds format
Trying to create a village, etc scene near the mountain in the old times. I could just paste the mountain image in the bg, but I am going to animate it also..so that would not be practical..
Thanks :o)
