Subject: Apophysis rendering question

Hi All!

Some of you may have noticed that I've ventured into Apo. I have a problem I hope someone can help me with. I'd like to render large enough to print 8x10s....2400x3000. When I enter that number in the size boxes in the render window I get a message saying that the available memory is less than the memory required. My Apo is on my C drive which has 15.6GB free space and I'm rendering to the H drive which has 13.7GB free space. I do it all the time with UF; why can't I do it in Apo? Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere or what?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any help you can give me.

The message is telling you that you don't have enough free RAM to do the render in a single "slice" - but this can be easily fixed...

In the Render window, you need to put a check in the "Limit memory usage to" box - then allocate an appropriate amount of memory to use for each slice by selecting it from the dropdown box.

Let us know how you go, OK?

Thanks SO much! I'll definitely let you know how it goes.

Well, I raised the memory limit to 1024 and I'm still getting the same message.

You need to lower the memory limit so that the render will use less of it...

OK, here's the deal:
I want to render at 3000x2400 with the quality at 200 (I'm assuming that's resolution). When I limit the useage to1024 the available memory is 220 and memory required is 439. When I limit the usage to 32 the available memory is 222 with the same memory required - 439. The available memory doesn't change much at all. I don't understand this stuff.

I've just looked at the System Information on my computer. Maybe I just really DON'T have enough memory:
Total Physical Memory: 512MB
Available Physical Memory: 193.23MB (could that be the problem?)
Total Virtual Memory: 200GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96GB

Whatcha think?

Just a suggestion; I’m running on Windows ME and also have 512 mb of RAM. My physical memory is 523,532 kb. I limit Windows’ behind the scene activities many of which are not really essential to squeeze out more system memory resources. At present I’m running at 92% free.

I find that when I boot up fresh with no other programs running in the background that Apophysis now has access to most of that memory.

8x10 at 300dpi=2400x3000 Why not lower your dpi to a still respectable printing 160 dpi and your new measurements would be; 1280x1600.

Here's a great tutorial on Apophysis read Part X for rendering settings.

Maddy,

When you open the render window and input your values, try limiting the memory to 128, and then just click on Render - it will work fine, and the dialog should tell you that it's going to render 5 "slices", OK?

Tdierikx,  I still had trouble with the 128 setting, keeping the quality at 200. I appreciate so much your time and trouble helping me with this, though :-) It got me to finally get a bunch of unused stuff off my computer whilst trying to free up some memory!

Quest, your solution worked for me! The print looks just great! Now to see if clients at my Salon, where I'm selling my work, will go for this new APO look!

Thank you both for helping me!! I just could not see how I could do this with UF and not with APO!

Well, gotta go print some stuff!!
