Subject: Ecosystem..getting objects above ground?

JackieD ( ) posted Fri, 19 October 2007 at 8:21 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 10:31 AM

I've been trying to figure out how to apply the  fish Ecosystem which ships with Vue 6 to one using dragonflies.  I need them to be in the air, not on the ground (of course!)...but the set up in the function editor for the fish is way too advanced for me to figure out.  Cutting and pasting doesn't work. Is there an easy way to do get my dragonflies to fly?  I also tried deleting the terrain hoping it would leave the ecosystem in place but it doesn't.

Thanks to anyone who can help. :-)

A "classical trick"  for that is to use a terrain (mountain), make the material transparent - air for example and then do the fish/bird ecosystem on that. Then you have the animals positioned in space without seeing what is under.

Will need maybe a bit tweaking of the fully transparent material to avoid reflections etc, but it is not very difficult.

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

If your using Vue Infinite I've writen a python script that will move the instances in an EcoSystem scattering them verticly by a controlable amount to achieve what you want to do.  It's available from my blog: Vue Eco Vertical Scatter Python Script

Since I have Esprit and can't run python scripts I use the "Wabe Classical Trick" a lot!

You might also try the Absolute offset from surface setting in the material editor.  You will probably have to play around a bit to get the effect you want but you can get objects hovering above ground this way
