ONE BIG IMHO

And so, the winners became those, who just drew something nice and signed it "Dinner with the dead". Phew...
My congratulations to those winners only, whose works CORRESPOND TO THE TOPIC.
They are:

boogers, 3d place -- good. A bit plastic, but it's absolutely fits the theme.
ToxicAngel, HM -- magnificent! It's drawn MUCH better than the 1st place, it's really stylish and 100% related to the topic. (I can't do anything lke this, but I gonna try:)
BAR-CODE, HM -- as for me, it's a bad work, where only lights are good. But it's really fits the theme.
cacavatica, Most Humorous -- Great composition, good plot, but very badly drawn.. Also it is really humorous and nicely done, AND IT FITS THE THEME :)

The others (especially the grandprize picture - really good drawn, but without any plot) are just pretty pictures.
Ok, now I should now, that doing the work for contest means just putting its name to something nicely done. No topic any more.
Well, my comments:
callum5, Grandprize -- I see the dead mutant head. WHERE is the dinner?
StealthWorks, 1st place -- sorry, but this is a work of 3DSMax newbie with a little knowledge of raytracing. Good lighting, anyway...
cwrw. 2nd place -- magnificent. (but also not related to the topic!!!!)
graphixrob, HM --nice details. But it may be dinner OF the dead or FOR the dead. not WITH.

That's what I think. Hope you remember that it is just IMHO :)

Online Now!

I'm afraid that I have to agree with DoZZer about the 2D/3D winners not seeming to fit the dinner theme... except for 4th place.  Excellent looking images, none the less.  Now the Photography winners, on the otherhand, seemed to totally grasp the Dinner with the Dead idea.  IMO

ONE BIG RESPONSE

Thanks for your comments DoZZeR - you are entitled to your opinions of course but I do feel you were a little harse-particularly on me...!
Firstly this was a particular challenge for me since it was done using MODO (not 3DSMax!) -  a package that I bought a couple of weeks before I entered the competition. Yes its a testament to the package more than anything else that I could produce a respectable looking  picture with such a short learning curve but I still had to put a pretty big effort personally into producing it.

More than the picture, I also hoped that the concept was something unique too ( I certainly didn't expect to win on natural artistic ability!) - maybe it wasn't to your taste but  whatever it was something  struck a chord with the judges.Remember, the contest asked for the artists 'interpretation' of dinner with the dead -that doesn't necessarily mean having to literally have a dead person sitting at a table having dinner!

Maybe I should I just be thankful that you weren't on the judging panel! Perhaps you could post a link to your entry  DoZZeR so the rest of us could have an opportunity to comment on that (or at least see what the 'perfect' entry should have looked like) .   ;-)

TO THE REST OF THE WINNERS: Congratulations - hope you enjoy your prizes. Not sure if you are allowed to swap parts of prizes but as I already own Manga Studio  - if anyone wants to swap any part of their prize for it please PM me . If no-one wants to swap I'm happy enough to give it away- again PM me if you're interested (it would be a shame to see it go to waste).

Thanks Renderosity for the contest - I've been entering contests for years and had almost given up hope of winning anything with so many great artists on this site-the moral is, never give up hope!  :-)

You shold not be so nervous, friend. I don't  think your work is ugly. I just think that it's not related to the theme. If the contest theme was "Something made of glass", I would give all my votes to your work. The pots are really nice. And I like your technics. But I don't understand, why you took the first place in this contest (mind the word marked with bold :).
BUT. You made me think about it and I understand, that I was wrong. I didn't mean to say my opinion in such rude words, and I apologise for "newbie". Sorry, really. The quality of your work is great. Sorry again -- I can't take back my words about the theme. I still think, that it is TOO original (just for me maybe) to understand :-
You and BAR-CODE didn't understand the main idea of my post. I didn't ever say, that MY work should take any place. And God save me, if I ever call MY work perfect :))). To the contrary, when I was looking though the works of other contestants, I found many ones, that could easily beat mine up. I was trying to say, that some prises were given to the wrong guys, thats all. And I brought some arguments for my words, didn't I? :)
If you still wish, you may comment my work -- but it doesn't change anything -- I know, that it couldn't win ;) I don't know where to find the links now, but I'll certainly will put it to my gallery tomorrow, and post the link here for you.

Now, BAR-CODE
Yes, I can have my HO. And I have it. As I have enough knowledge about art to say: I have better works in my gallery, than this particular of yours, if you think it matters :). As for me, I will say it in more details, your work has nice composition and lighting, but the characters are bad. There are much better ones in the others' pictures, that haven't even benn "honourably mentioned".
But your work surely hits the theme, so you deserved your prise, I said. Don't be so noisy :)

I hope, there is no misunderstanding left? :)

calum5 ( ) posted Thu, 01 November 2007 at 12:53 PM

Well first let me say thanks to everyone involved and am extreemly flattered to be selected as a winner.
If I could now politley respond to the people that feel my art was not in tune with the theme and I should not of been considered for a prize.
I thought I'd use my mind and think what really Dinner with the Dead could mean.
Maggotts feast on the dead ?I thought that was obvious, the artists interpritaion is alowd but I wanted it (the theme to be clear)like all my previous entries to such contests here.
A Dead zombie awake at halloween being eaten by maggotts I felt would fit the bill as it is areality of Dinner with the dea No?.I felt I covered the subject well enough and added a humour touch as to not scare the newbies to much lol ..As for personal prefrences to others art above mine thats cool, everyones intitled to their opinions ~it just feels a little sour in here..
Could I add,I spent 2 weeks modeling the creature from a sphere, and a week on the postwork especially on the face itself .
Alot of hard work went into my entry and Im very proud to be selected .Im going to enjoy my Prizes very much! Thanks!
Warmest regards to everyone !
Bye cal

Pretty cool stuff huh? soooo, who won the renderosity gift vouchers? I havebt seen a mention of those yet. AC

ArtByMel ( ) posted Thu, 01 November 2007 at 4:57 PM

It never fails to amaze me. It's usually the people whose works are mediocre that tend to have negative comments and critque about the art of folks with quite a bit of talent. Sad but true.

I hope the negative comments don't  take anything away from those of you who won. Enjoy your win, you all deserve it. And Calum5 I knew exactly what you were doing and it fit the theme perfectly I thought, made me go ewww :), but it was still terrific. Congrats to all the winners and for those who didn't win I seen some really great work throughout all the entries.

StealthWorks ( ) posted Thu, 01 November 2007 at 6:07 PM

DoZZeR - apology accepted! ;-)
Actually can I just explain my image to you a bit to show that it does in fact fit in with the theme. The title was Dinner with the Dead. The image depicts someone (a dead person) preparing a dinner for some zombie friends (as in the caption). The humour (albeit mild) is the use of everyday modern Curry Powder (Extra Hot) amongst all the exotic halloween flavourings (eye of newt, minced worms etc...). Maybe I should have explained it in the blurb a bit more but I really did think that it fitted in with the required theme. I created the image from scratch specifically for this contest.
Oh well, its over now - guess I'll try and explain the image a bit better in my next one
Cheers :-)

Hey, little one. I said, don't be too nervous :)))
Just think about two things.

  1. What was the story of your work?
  2. What is the story of mine?
  3. Is it polite to make such accusations?

P.S. And, btw, what was the number of your entry in the contest?..

StaceyG ( ) posted Fri, 02 November 2007 at 2:48 PM

Okay its ashame that members can't just congraulate the winners and move on. Instead we have a few members that are trying to pick apart winning entries. Why is that? Its disrespectful and not appropriate.  I'm disappointed to see entrants of the contest doing this and members who didn't even participate as well.
Its a contest, there are winners and there are entrants that didn't win but everyone who participated put thought and hard work into their entries and that should be respected, period.

The contest rules state..

Contest Theme is: "Dinner With the Dead" **as this phrase is interpreted by the artist.

**Does anyone read the whole contest rules? THIS IS INTERPRETED BY THE ARTIST. so the whole "so and so's image doesn't go with the theme of the contest" is not a good arguement that so and so's image wasn't deserving of the win. Please READ.

Also the theme is only ONE thing that the entrants were judged on.... Everyone put hard work in their entrants and no one should be made to feel bad because their entry won a prize.

I'm locking this thread because the judged winners of this contest should not be made to feel this way.

And I just want to say to the winners of this contest, Congratualtions. Please feel proud of your work and don't bother trying to explain how you interpreted the theme of the contest to others, its your interpretation and that follows the contest rules. Good Job.
