Subject: Nothing but problems since 6.0.3...

DocMatter ( ) posted Mon, 19 November 2007 at 9:44 PM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 1:51 AM

Ever since I installed the latest patch, I've had nothing but problems.  Carrara hangs while trying to open files or crashes due to "memory allocation" problems when I'm working on a file.  And , yes, I'm clearing out mt DazTmp folder every time and deleting all unused shaders and objects regularly.
I've already had to totally recreate from scratch 3 projects that I've lost in the last week due to this problem... and its getting very old.
Is anyone else having these problems?  Is there anything I can do about it?  Can I run the old patch installer and go back to version 6.0.2?

Sorry to hear you're having those kinds of issues. Everything is running smooth for me on this system. When goofy things happen like that, resetting the preferences is typically a good thing to do. (Pull down menu, File => Reset Preferences). Also, if you have any Shader or Carrara 3rd party extensions and haven't updated those to C6 versions, they will also create problems. Post back as you try things and we'll see if we can help get it solved. Mark

As Mark says, I  also have very little problem with 6.03.

Do a re-install of the Carrara 6.03, making sure you are in a brand new folder maybe?

I tried the reset preferences, and I still cant open some of my files.  I dont use any 3rd party extensions (C6 Pro is my first crack at Carrara), so nothing to update there.
I'll try the reinstall and see if that helps.

Reinstall didnt help either.  Still can't open several files I was working with, even though I saved them before the crash.
Could it be the file size?  One file I have that opens no problem is 59 MB (4 Daz figures and some props), but one that won't open is 63 MB (only 2 Daz figures and some props.)
I submitted a bug report to Daz also.
Harrumph!!

Mark will reply more fully I guess. File size looks a problem to me.

The DAZ connection/Poser stuff&$#@!!***--it seems so inconsequential.

Carrara has been used, for ages, to make stuff for Poser--it makes one think about different mind sets maybe?

Hi Black cat, Well that's exciting. It may be coming down to some system stuff. How much installed RAM do you have? I've worked with files up to 800M but it hasn't been with Poser content. I do know that conforming clothing and memory usage is continuing to be improved in Carrara and is a big priority. Conforming clothing often has more polys than the actual figures they cover. While that might not create super massive files, it seems that tracking a bunch of polys that are linked to other polys regarding there positioning is where the memory management issues may come in. So, until that improvement takes place, this may be your excuse to buy more RAM if you don't have several Gigs installed. ;-) Mark

I've got my system maxed out at 2 GB DDR RAM, so I hope thats enough.  I've gotten addicted to Carrara since I bought C6 Pro and I'd hate to have to buy a new computer to keep up with it.
(Oh well, the kids won't mind hand-me-downs for Christmas this year.  ;)

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Tue, 20 November 2007 at 1:50 PM

Remember, hand-me-downs help build character and character is good. :D One last thing that I'll suggest checking is your texture spooling settings. (File => Preferences => Imaging/Scratch disk) If your scene is texture map rich, you might want to set the memory reserve to 800M or so (based on 2G of RAM). If the textures aren't super high resolution, you can dial it down to about 100M per Gig of RAM. I routinely keep mine at a little over 500M. Depending on what's going on on your system, this may or may not do squat. But it's worth a try. And, addiction is a good thing when it's Carrara. ;)

I have one thing that niggles me about carrara, every time I open a new scene the screen is black until I click on it.
I set the scene up, but find  using the manipulator also doesnot change when I select from the sidebar (IE if I had movement manip the change to resize, this does not come into effct until I click in the work area which can be annoying sometimes)
I then do a render and when I return to the assembly room the screen is once more black and I have to click in the screen again.
I just want to know if its me or if this happens to others and it is normal?

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Wed, 21 November 2007 at 7:31 AM

This sounds like a video driver/OpenGL thing. Try switching the interactive render settings to Software instead of OpenGL and see if it still happens. Additionally, if you want to continue to use OGL, make sure that you are actually running the most recent version of your video card's driver.

bingo!, thanks mark although i would of thought my ogl should of been fine having two cards installed!

DocMatter ( ) posted Wed, 21 November 2007 at 2:41 PM

I had the texture spooling set at around 500 but bumped it up to around 800 MB to see if that had any effect.  I still got the "A memory allocation error has occurred."  and it was a brand new scene.  One thing I have noticed is that I get this error almost always after working with the file for a while and then trying to add a pose (from my Runtime) to an existing figure.

Okay, the problems getting worse.  Its gotten to a point where I cant do squat in Carrara.  It locks up if I look at it wrong.  I've reinstalled 6.03 several times and it doesn't help.  I want to go back to version 6.02 where things ran so much nicer, but the installer won't let me saying Ive got a newer version already installed.
Do I have to uninstall Carrara completely and start all over to get this $%^&* working again?
GRUMBLE

Is the problem only with Windows? Have you all just had a Windows update?

DocMatter ( ) posted Mon, 26 November 2007 at 10:11 PM

I have XP and there's been no update that I know of.

bwtr ( ) posted Mon, 26 November 2007 at 10:27 PM

14th November?

If there was an update then, my 'puter did it without telling me about it.

DocMatter ( ) posted Wed, 28 November 2007 at 10:57 PM

Just wanted to let you know that I fixed the problem (since DAZ closed the bug file without resolving it, saying they were aware of the problem and addressing it.).  I uninstalled Carrara and reinstalled the original Carrara 6.0 and the 6.02 update only.  Now everything works just fine, so it was something in the 6.03 release that was screwing me up.
I'll be leaving it at 6.02 for a long time, thank you very much!

MarkBremmer ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2007 at 6:35 AM

Wild. Thanks for the update. Glad you've got it working but wish it was working on 6.0.3. :-/
