@fran, glad you found it, lots of info in there to digest. I am still taking it all in.
@dv, dunno if it helps but I found I had to 'left mouse click on 'start' and go to the email icon on mine.
@koosie, I will have turkish delight please.:tt2:.
I've had a rough few days, Christmas up the bush was great! Coming home I got a bout of gastro, 800klm and stopping at every wayside toilet and town makes for a slow trip believe me!
Yesterday I had heyfeaver and headaches and today just as I thought everything was improving I had a sneeze attack whilst braking and rolled the beemer into the car in front, broke the number plate holder on my car and dented the others' bumper and my ego. :cursing:
However the day has picked up and I have just ordered a new Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop with XP!!!
@dv, are you able to do the vista to xp rollback on your pc?
All the best for New Years gang!
Jen
Oh, Jen, I hope you're doing better now and the rest of your holidays went well!

Yeah I hope you're doing better now Boofy. Better than me anyway...
I've just got back from travelling around the UK doing Xmas relative visiting, while acquiring a delightful bout of seaonal Flu, which means an inability to sleep since when I lie down I immediately can't breathe, can't see cos my eyes are constantly watering, a throat that feels like it is lined with hot rusty iron filings or according to Ian (who's suffering along side me - awwww, sweet!) coconut doormatting, a chest that sounds like rustling tinfoil, a head that's too heavy for my neck and a nose like a contantly dripping faucet as well as aches in every bone.
We are both taking day and night flu capsules but if they are working then we'd probably be dead without them cos even with them life is...knackering...
but then at least we aren't visiting the loo every five minutes.
Gawd, I can't believe I just found the silver linning!
Get well soon Boofy.

Hi all,
thanks for the wellwishes. My system is much better thanks. Rotten thing is that unlike Fran, because of the drugs for the kidney transplant interacting with sooooo many other drugs and even herbal remedies I cant take anything much if I do get way laid by a nasty bug. I just have to weather it all.
Would you believe as soon as the gastro started settling I got a 48hr bug with a sore throat and cough (i know it was a bug cause Alan got it too)
However! I have just returned hale and (reasonalbly) hearty from a great little interstate trip by plane to Sydney to watch my 10 year old cousin Michelle, play cricket for her school at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the half time entertainment in the test match for the 3rd day of Australia VS India! She made 3 runs, bowled and fielded and I took about 100 pics of it all for her (naturally) I have attached one, sorry couldn't resist, She is the one in pink shoelaces throwing the ball. We went up yesterday morning, watched the game, had tea on the waterfront, went to bed and then flew home this afternoon!
I am in the midst of sorting out getting a laptop as this pc is a tad...umm....unreliable, so bear with me if I am a bit intermedate with my replies etc.
Hopefully now that everything is settling down I can get going with my stable, I may be a bit slow but it is still moving ahead, got some great pics of an old stable on my aunts farm before I got the tummy wobbles, I will send them to you koosie when I have sorted everything out.
Happy new year all!
@Koosie, that plan is looking really good!
Jen
glad to hear you are better, jen, i have been having trouble for weeks on and off, but now everything seems to settle a little bit
(never understood cricket, never will understand cricket, it's incomprehensible, it lasts for days and they only play test matches, never apparently the real ones - don't try to explain it to me, please)

A bit brighter thanks, but now the coughing won't stop...
Don't you just hate the inevitability of having to go through every single stage like this, and always you hope that this time you'll be able to skip a step, but you never can.
sigh.
Oh well, each step at least means I'm getting closer to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for asking - hopefully I'll soon be feeling able to get on with some modelling.

@koosie: I agree totally, any game that can last 5 days and end in a draw baffles me! I just went to see my cousin play....and it was a nice trip away for us.
Sounds like we are both a pair of crocks here fran, lets go and polish off a bottle of something to kill off the bugs...:b_overwhelmed:.....or do some shopping! For medicinal purposes only!
Boofy, you can have the alcohol, I don't really feel like it. I'm pinning my hopes on the doctor - whom I am seeing in 40 minutes...

Somehow fran I think the alcohol while nice at the time will just make it worse with a hangover to add to the misery. I hope the doc can give you something to knock it out of your system. I am sloooowly getting there. The gastro is settling more each day and I still have a cough and sore throat at times but not as bad, dodgy voice and switchboard work are not really good partners I can assure you.
I think rest is about the best cure for most things. At least amoungst all this my back seems to have settled down which is a great relief.
Beautiful!!!

yes, i tried out some clay renders, covering up the holes and it looks good! but i have to finish this one and one house to close the harbour view (together with your church) as the whole inner harbout will be looking good!
soon there will be: 'the great render' (i hope)

I've been on a texturing and bump mapping binge for past 6 months, and have acquired 2-3 texture making programs, like Genetica and Filter Forge. I have hundreds of textures that want to see the light of day!!!
If there are little pieces that you want me to start with, please send them my way... and if you have ideas for a specific look, lemme know :)

I need a UV mapped OBJ file, and if you have a specific idea of the look you want, a reference pic.
Also, if there are any pieces that still need UV mapping, I can jump on that too.
I was thinking about making two versions of each texture... default would be a lower res, for mass rendered scenes, and a higher res, that would look nice in closeups.
I'd paint them higer res, then resize the files for lower res.
I imagine that DVlenks buildings are uv mapped to work as one map/image per building.
I don't remember the outcome of sketchup UV mapping...
I have to start that warehouse from scratch, in the process of moving files from one computer to another, I can't figure out where I put it (and some other files). There's still hope I'll find it.

dv knows what uv mapped obj files are - all i have is sketchup files. soon i will make some screenshots of textured images - the textures are quite correct, but too 'clean' - there is not very much variation, neither in brick nor in colours used. i need a little bit of time to make an image to show what i mean. i will also post some photos, but remember that these also look very clean, because these are restored old buildings. the textures should for the greater part not to be too shabby. the houses around the inner harbour are merchant's houses, which were generally kept in good repair - the houses along the river, where the quay is for loading/unloading ships that come up from the river is shabbier - this is where the work is done - the hotel should also be a little bit greasy, but not too much.
in general what we are building is not really delapidated, just a little worn, if you know what i mean.

No Conniekat, my UVs (and grouping) were done by material group; with each material group having it's own UV space. i.e. walls, trim, glass, etc. Each material group's UVs are maximized to a square UV space, as much as possible.
I can remap them for you if you want. It would really just be a question of scaling and packing; but will still take time. I think that way is a little more effiecient; but is a lot harder for the likes of me to texture.
Otherwise, I will extract the templates (haven't done that yet), zip up a block, and send it to you. I still have your email address.
Friends don't let friends use booleans.
Oh, DV, don't worry about remaping them! I can texture them the way you mapped them just fine (I think, based on your description)
Send me OBJ file, I really don't work off of templates. I wouldn't know what to do with just templates, since I don't paint on them in 2D :( Plus, you don't need to spend time making templates.
I load the OBJ's into Deep Paint or Zbrush, and paint right on the object. (After I tell it how to handle each map). Deep Paint, for example, handles objects with a number of different UV maps and material groups.
DV, I remember you guys discussing UV mapping from sketchup. Do sketchup files need to be remapped. I seem to remember Sketchup doing some soprt of mapping of it's own. I don't recall, what was the outcome of that? I don't remember if we ever decided on how to handle it?
I could turn maps I make into max's materials? Would that be of use to anyone, DV?

No worries. It takes quite a bit of painting to make things look dilapidated. They'll come out pretty clean looking to start with. I'll post progress shots as I go.

I have only one map channel per uv group on all of the models. Only 3d paint I've ever done is with Max (vertex painting, for shader masks and such), other than that i only know how to use templates and paint (sort of  ) layers with Photoshop. I really have to have mathematical interface for everything or I am completely helpless. When I start 'eyeing things up', it gets ugly real quick.
Well, for me to use the sketchup models, I'll have to remap them.
If you are using 3d paint; you can probably work with them as is; except that sketchup uses parametric primitives (and deriviatives) for modeling and doesn't quadrangulate on export. That isn't always a problem; but can be on concave openings (like an archway).
Sketchup overwrites existing UVs and does box map projection on the entire model. It might even be the entire scene, I'm not sure about that. Anyway, you get a 6 piece UV map which is basically an orthographic projection of the model from 'front', 'back', 'left', 'right', 'top', and 'bottom'. How it goes about determining the axis for those projections is a mystery to me.
When I get home, I'll send you the harborfront block, which is completely finished with modelling and mapping.
