Subject: Ice Shader For Carrara 5?

Jonj1611 ( ) posted Sun, 16 December 2007 at 7:00 AM · edited Mon, 03 February 2025 at 11:01 AM

Hi,

Does anyone know where I might find a good ice shader for Carrara 5 Standard? I have tried the glacier and snow shaders that come with Vue, but really I am looking for an ice shader, something that is good close up.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Jon

unless there's some reason to keep this topic private, carrara has also got glacier and frozen water shaders in the browser.

Hi,

Thanks, I had mixed results with the built in shaders, I found the glacier to be very blue and not quite what I was looking for, and for some reason the snow shaders when rendered had lines going across them, not sure if that was the shader of the the actual terrain(2048x2048)

Thanks
Jon

If Jonji finds some of mine (which included the browser ones) to be of some value I would be happy to supply to others.

Lets wait to see if they are ok first.

Does Carrara Standard 5 do translucency at least?  It is a big help when making ice.

Carrara 6 does In-Scattering.  But this is as close as I can get to tricking Carrara Pro 5.1 into doing something similar.

I don't have C6.  I'm waiting for version 7.  So it will be awhile before I can play with In-Scattering, myself.

No C6?---wow, I am surprised. Of all people!

C6 really is a good update. At least as good as the C4 to C5 one was.

I'll upgrade Carrara when it can do SSS at least as well as Vue 6.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Mon, 17 December 2007 at 12:07 PM

yes, c6pro has sss. I dunno how it compares to vue.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Mon, 17 December 2007 at 1:10 PM · edited Mon, 17 December 2007 at 1:10 PM

Its SSS doesn't do skin very well.  It's the same as C5's SSS.  It can do a candle or a bar of soap somewhat.  But not marble statues or icebergs.

Shonner. In C6 we now have added to Transperency,---- Intensity, Absorption and In-scattering, would these not be what you are looking for?

Those are perfect for liquid, such as lake depth, vats of boiled lard, sewage muck.  But not for skin bags containing water (aka humans) or other solids.  If SSS (which is for solids) were improved in C6 by now, we'd be seeing some better Poser renders of SSS skin here.  Maybe Carrara 6.1 will have this new SSS feature?  Earlobes are in dire need for some real SSS rendering.

Agreed, SSS needs to be at least map driven.
