Subject: What people like and don't like in Promo images..I know there was a thread aroun

Khory_D ( ) posted Thu, 24 January 2008 at 10:02 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 9:13 PM

I am positive I saw a thread somewhere.. At some point. But try as I might I can't locate it. Anyone have a clue? If not then anyone have suggestions for a list? I'm trying to pull one together and don't want it just to be my personal thoughts.

On my personal list would be no close ups, only one angle  for character faces and no back views of hair or clothing, scary camera settings so characters have huge noses, and lighting that may or may not be causing odd lines on skin textures.

That's just it.. Half the time clothes have one shot repeated over and over of the front.. Meh.. Or a single shot of the face same angle for every single image.

I'll just keep looking to find what people expect from promo images. Sorry to bother ya'll

If it's a skin texture, I definitely want multiple views, i.e.: Front, Back, Side, preferably in the default T position.  Same for hair.  Clothes I don't care about too much, since there is none for sale for my figure of choice (Posette).

dphoadly, I thought your fav figure was Judy. :) On skin textures I definately want front, side and back views. I want one portrait shot of the face. On clothes, haven't thought about it much but front and back views if the back has different pattern than front. What I don't want is various colored lighting effects; Blues, greens, reds, oranges and such...it doesn't give a true idea of the textue.

It wasn't Judy that I was using so much, but Neja.  That's Pitklad's hybrid figure of Judy's body with Posette's Head.  A very lovely and buxom figure, and one I intend some day to remap to V3, so that she can ake her rightful place alongside my PosetteV3, PosetteV3wG, and PosetteeVe3.  While I have absolutely no use for V3 characters, I'm always on the lookout for new V3 skin textures that I can use with my remapped Posettes.  I'm also on the look out for M3 skins to  use with my remapped P4DukeM3 (formerly known as Dork0.  Both these figures are absolutely scintillating when coupled with new, uptodate, textures.  And yes, I don't want to buy something that I can't see from all three y axis directions, and under a neutral light.  If it's a good product, it should sell itself, without too much frippery.

DPh, I have some free textures for V2 and V3 and M3 at sharecg, just follow the link and check it out.
I'll soon have a fee Judy text and head morph.
Got an image of her in my gallery here. :)

On Promo images, I also like to see some details on the skin textures...fingers, elbows, knees and a close-up of the face,

I don't like to scroll endlessly down the page to see each shot.

"I don't like to scroll endlessly down the page to see each shot."

I'm getting less and less enchanted with that myself. It seems like occasionally its "just how much stuff can I stick in here just to do it" . I wonder how far down the average person does scroll (bet there is a page out there somewhere on the net that says just how far down the average person is willing to scroll too -grin-) before they overload on information?

I'm on DSL but it took almost 3 minutes to scroll about halfway down before I got disgusted and quit on one promo (not naming names either). :)

To me, that is a big put off on considering purchase.

for my own promos, I just use the regular pages that are allowed.

My pet peeves are things that should be fixed in ANY render and that is pokethrough of hair into the mesh of the clothing, figure or props.  Drives me batty almost consistently that one does.

Never ending scrolling promo pages, if you need more than the 4 slots allocated then please hyperlink thumbnails and give us a break from interminable scrolling.

Postworking on promotional store images, compositing yes, you HAVE to but postwork should be a complete no-no, excepting painted hair on a character or clothing promo but no to filter effects and hue/brightness adjustments..

Lack of shadows in any promotional image puts me off, spend the extra time to render something that looks like it has a little depth and like you actually care about it.  If you care I might just.

Little to no promo text drives me mad as well.  Do i need another product to use your item?  What does the item do?  What exactly is included?  Tell me up front don't make me guess from the promo images or pull up the read me in hope that the file list will enlighten me - you'd be amazed how many times I have passed by a product that looked moderately interesting in the promos because there was little to no information entered in the promo text slot.

One other I can add to the list may sound a bit petty.. But many industry merchants have English as a second language and sometimes the promo wording can be more than a little confusing or off putting.

My biggest dislike is having a promo so loaded up with accessories in order to make a pretty picture I don't know what the actual product is the merchant is attempting to sell. Hate painted hair

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

That doesn't bother me half so much as nothing there at all except an endless stream of pictures.

Even if all it says is along the lines of:

8 textures for xyz outfit.

Works in Poser versions xyz

Works in Daz studio

I'm happy but it is getting more and more coomon to see absolutely nothing in there, or worse than nothing is "beautiful textures".

I hate Poser content with promos done in Max and other software!!!

I hate small promo images.

I hate "artistic render" promos.

I hate renders with dark lighting and renders with transparency or mist effects obscuring the actual default appearance of the product. I will never buy anything promoed that way.

I hate renders blown out with excessive IBL.

I hate little J. Peterman narratives.

I like wire frame and "smooth shaded" renders of mesh.

I like links to additional hi-res promos off-site.

I like full body head-to-two front and back default comparison renders for characters.

BTW - Any vendor who does not speak English as a first language, I will vet your copy if you send me a site mail. I know what it is like to be out of your element linguistically.

SoCalRoberta ( ) posted Fri, 25 January 2008 at 9:16 PM

My pet peeve is colored lighting, especially on character sets.:cursing:
If you use a peach or orange light how the heck am I suppose to know what color your product actually is ? And why would I want to give you money for a cat in a bag?

Having said that, I have no objection to one artistic render in the promo package, as long as it is identified as such.

the_tdog ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2008 at 12:33 AM

Nice products with ugly characters, maybe?  ANYTHING with "Cool Coils Hair"... I hate that hairstyle.

Another one would be stiff looking poses, though, I have to admit, sometimes I enjoy a really bad promo pic... I get a good laugh at some of 'em.

freyfaxi62 ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2008 at 3:07 AM

Showing off the products good points is all very well and good..but it should be mandatory to show the item in it's bare, default state..exacty WHAT you get, out of the box..and under the basic, default Poser lighting. Then folks will know exactly what they are getting ?

My own personal dislike in a promo is a failure to show the back of a hair mesh. I really would like to see how the hair looks at all angles.

Quote - Quote "I hate little J. Peterman narratives."

I do not know what this means.

This is where instead of saying:

"This product for DAZ3D Victoria 4.1 contains 3 conforming clothes  and two props with two textures each; .cr2 shirt, pants, boots - .pp2 hat, goggles, torch."*

It says:

"Amy is a superbabe Vicky, She wants to sex up your runtimes. She is ready for anything. She crawls through the Vorg infested swaps of the Aphex Twins flatworld ready to battle with the swamp creatures of Gorsh-Haden. Maybe she goes on vacation with you to Sub-Saturn base to dance the night away to the Brittany XXIII entertainment droid or goes to Spin class with you on alternating Wednsdays. She is sexy babe with wholsome family values!"

Daz went through a period where I could not figure out for the life of me what the product consisted of with out checking the file list.

Here off hand is a recent promo text for a texture expansion for an interior room scene:

*ec•lec•tic [i-klek-tik] – adjective: not following any one system, but selecting and using what are considered the best elements of all systems.

Good taste in interior design – the kind that does not come pre-packaged but springs from within – is a matter of choosing to surround yourself with that which you find appealing, and having each unique piece magically fall into a harmonious, esthetically pleasing symphony of décor.

It is this form of taste that dictates the composition of the Dream Home's Eclectic interiors, created by an interior and landscape design professional turned digital texture artist. The Eclectic texture set for the Dream Home Retreat showcases this esthetic with the very finest materials and details: polished parquet floors, a terracotta and talavera tile balcony with wrought iron railings, carved doorways and stained glass panels, all of which combine to create the perfect setting for the adventurous and the cultivated.

Taking full advantage of the realistic texture potential in current software, Dream Home - Eclectic Retreat Decor includes diffusion (texture), bump, displacement, specularity, reflection and transparency maps for optimized for Poser and DAZ Studio, all accessible via coordinating thumbnails.

*WTF!

Oh that! Okay, I know what you mean now. Thank you for explaining.

momodot ( ) posted Sat, 26 January 2008 at 10:43 PM · edited Sat, 26 January 2008 at 10:43 PM

You would be surprised how many products state they are for Vicky without indicating V2, V3, or V4. Of course you can tell from the image but I think that should be in the text as well since many vendors don't seem to grasp the nomenclature of the character catagories in the shop.

Personally I think the figure should be in the name of the library folders.

BTW... I can't tell you how often I find a product for which the names of the figure and pose folders absolutly have nothing to do with each other much less the names of the geometry and textures folders.

winter200 ( ) posted Sun, 27 January 2008 at 12:02 AM

I hate when it is not told if the clothing is dynamic or conforming.
"  ""     when it is stated "contains many full body morphs" but not what those body morphs are.
""  ''      when there is not a picture of how hair will look if you twist or turn the figures head or neck abit.
''   ''      when there is not even one picture showing a skin textures forehead or eyebrows.

just a few hates I can think of right now.

Klutz ( ) posted Sun, 27 January 2008 at 9:47 AM

Like to see:

Full body texture shots, uncluttered with this or that seperate clothing product.
I like to see what it is I am actually buying.
( Yes, I do have an issue with Daz about this! )

Fed up of:

Endless unrealistic 2nd skins.....which actually do seem to be going out of fashion! YAY! :woot:

This really doesn't have to do with the promo images or the description or anything... but one of my pet peeves is having a Thumbs.db file in every directory that has an image of some sort. I don't like having to scour through my directories to find them, or even to run a Search through Windows and delete them. The files don't have any purpose of being there.
