Subject: Hierarchy of files for a DAZ Dummy

Cica ( ) posted Sat, 09 February 2008 at 8:19 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 2:26 PM

Ok.. those of you who know DAZ...  will say "Boy is she dumb!"  I know this already.  That's why I'm asking for help here...

Could... would someone PLEASE, tell me the complete hierarchy of the folders for DAZ from top to bottom?   I have dl'd a ton of stuff and unzipped them into the DAZ, but when I open DAZ content, I get a bunch of folders with nothing showing in them...  So it's obvious that I'm putting them in the wrong place....

PLEASE HELP!!!  THANK YOU!

Confused DAZ Dummy

Also... Where do the png, jpeg's etc go?    Actually what goes into each folder?  Can't I have just one runtime folder, one Content folder, one Studio folder, one Readme folder... etc?  Does each character have to have it's own folder?  If so, What goes into those folders?

See what I mean?  It's so confusing to me!  GRRRRRRR!

Thanks!

OK  thanks for all your help... I have another questions...

When I open DAZ, it seems like there's more and more files open of the same thing.. more each time I open it... Does it have a cashe that needs to be cleared out or something?  and How do I do it?  I tried clearing out my temp folders but that didn't do it.

THANKS!

I come on. I've the same problem, with a curious behaviour of D|S which accepts deleting directories ONLY if there are files in. D|S refuses to delete empty directories. I was unsuccessful with localizing the cache-file.

Well I found a solution of this problem, but I'm affraid it can't be usefull for you as it's dependent of my particular workflow: I install only the characters and props I use in a project and uninstall them as soon as the project is finished.

This idea came to me from a video-tutorial (90Mo, 35mn) viewing which I noticed that 80% of the video runing time was showing the teacher browsing hundreds and hundreds directories and only 20% dedicated to do something usefull. Guess that in real life his workflow runs in the same maner, i.e a 80% of  losses in his working time.

So, cica, I you are interested, (sorry for my poor english), tell me, and  I'll explain to you how I did for never have any problem with D|S hierarchies & content showing.

Friendly, LocusSolus.

I'm not sure this can be helpfull, just my personal choices for for time less loss. (I like "less loss" assonance in your language).

First I consider that in restaurant you don't lay the table for the entry, the main dish, and the dessert at the same time, but you desserve and re-lay the table between each turn of service. and so do I for my runtime directories. Presently I'm working on a Jurassic scene, and You can read in my home page the list of what I installed for, and there is no other thing installed else what I need, all what I need, only what I need for this scene. After applauses, let the play-ground of the theater will be cleaned of decorums, costumes, actors etc...

Why? Because I noticed that runing DAZ-installers of  5, 15, 30 items takes only few minutes within a 30 hours of hard work on your scenes. so hundreds of figures, poses, morphs, textures, of you previous fairy tale lovely scene for a young people magazine, will brake and bother you on your present new scene of Lancelot fighting the dragon under a crimson sky  near the haunted castle.

By the way,  I previously uninstalled all items after final, realy final, DEFINITIVE final  render. But now, I no longer do that, because It is again time loosing. I just delete (DELETE, not EMPTY!) the Runtime directory and all others in the "MyCurrentProject" dir.

Worse, I added recently a touch of satanism in this way, by using a disk partition dedicated to the project, to avoid spending 350 times one full minute  with developping
c:program filesdazDaZ studiocontentRuntimeLibrairiesDazpeopleAnimalsmilDragonposes
(from memory).

So, I've a small 5Giga bytes partition on my Hard drive named let's say H: which contains my previous work with 2500 files.

  • I no longer uninstall them, I just format the disk H: in the file manager, with the option "Quick formating". It takes less than one minute for 5 Gb. so H: contains nothing. Absolutely nothing.
  • Now I load D|S, go to preference>directories, remove all, Add just H: (which, I repeat, is empty), validate and quit. Reload: the ancient fake directories have disapeared!!!
  • HERE I install what I'll need for my new project, all what I need, only what I need for my new scene. It takes 5 minutes at all. When installers display the the pop-up window "Searching for installed content" I immediately click on the "CANCEL" button, and Type always "H:" (and nothing else!) as the target directory.
  • Now I load D|S. I click on the button "search for content" ,untag anything else H:,  and click OK. After few seconds, it's done. I go to the content tab and guess why I find? All what I need and only what I need!  in few and neighbour tree-views.

So, let's summarize:

  • Formating H: --> 2 minutes.
  • "fake" loading D|S and clearing & adding H: in preferences tab: -->1minute.
  • Installing 30 items: -->8-10 minutes. (depends of the scene)
  • Reloading D|S and "search for content" : -->1 minute.

Disk partition is an option. A good option, but an option. you can also use an external drive,  memory mini-card or a usb key, it does absolutely NOT affect the rendering or loading time.
Since I do that, I'm living on a flying carpet. But what is the price of a flying carpet?

There is one: as I install DAZ's items each time I begin a new project, I am obliged to be extremely rigourous in the management of my intallers. As I downloaded quite all free DAZ, (200 items) a lot of platinum oldies (a treasure! some jewels could be found among a lot of old towels), and each week one or two more freebies, I cant feel authorized to be laxist not imprecised in the organisation of my installers files. so I invested some hours to build a clear, steady, explicit, and knowledge-full tree for my installers files. All buildings together, interior subdir, exterior subdir, all animals together, flying subdir, aquatic subdir, domestic subdir, jurassic etc...EACH product ALONE in a separate directory, meaningfull named and containing: - The ".EXE" file

  • The ".MHT" file (the product page of DAZ product site, with all the datails of contents, requisits, etc...
  • The ".JPGs" of sample pictures in the DAZ product page (enlarged) for a quick browse to collect stuff for the scene.

I must admit that costed me efforts, but now, when I download an item from DAZ or from everywhere, I always save the product page ("Save as" in IE with MHT option. NO off line reading), I always save the 3-4 most significant pictures, and then download the EXE file, save all in a comprehensive place in my collected items Directory. Doing that I never need more than 1 minute to find what I need.

Bye-bye,  the hell!

Friendly, Locus Solus.

ps1: Never try to partition your hardrive, even using quaterdeck's "Partition Magic" if you are not easy with that manip.
ps2: Are you free for Valentine's? Alalaaa...those french guys, they have not changed!

That's all folks
