Subject: Poser and ATI 7.12 Drivers

Magnatude ( ) posted Sun, 13 January 2008 at 10:33 PM · edited Sun, 15 December 2024 at 8:48 PM

Anyone else having a problem with the new ATI Radeon Drivers? version 7.12

Problems I've been having is a huge amount of lag. I mean HUGE.
I switched back to version 7.10 and the lag stopped. So anyone encountering this, take note!

(I'm using an ATI X1600 Pro 512, and 2 gig DDR for memory and Poser 4/5/6)

Thanks man, I have the exact same card as you and I was just thinking of upgrading my drivers!

I don't have an ATI card but had similar problems with the last Nvidia drivers. Man, updated drivers lately have been the pits when it comes to using poser.

I'm back as well on 7.10, unable to use Poser 7 in OpenGL Mode with Catalyst 7.12.

With 7.12 Poser 7 is unusable in OpenGL : Slow down, freezes or crash.

Evidently ATI is incorporating some of the driver issues from Vista to XP now. I contacted Uli at EF about it last month.

Use the 7.12 drivers, and in the poser ini in the documents applications folder make this change:

Here are the steps in a nutshell:
"Windows Vista owners with certain ATI graphics cards may notice that
Poser takes a long time to highlight the body part or prop that is moused
over (due to the long delay it may appear that items are not highlighting
at all.) This complicates the job of selecting parts to pose; the
situation can be greatly improved by editing the Poser.ini file to set the
PREVIEW_OGL_OBJECT_BBOXPICKING entry to 1 (from the default zero.)"

That resolved the issue here with the 7.12 drivers. I always update my drivers as soon as they are available, and ran into this weeks ago.. it drove me NUTS trying to figure out what was what, but fortunately, I had a poser guru I could ask about it.

So, install the 7.12 ati driver, reboot, and then make the ini change before starting poser up.. I didn't see any issues at all with P7 after that change.

I am using XP SP2 as well.... had the same problem with the 7.12 driver.
The tip posted by Gareee solved the problem.

No more lag when selecting items or moving/rotating the camera or when working
in the material room.

Thanks for posting!

My pleasure! I usually HAVE to upgrade drivers, because either a new game or a 3d utility HAS to have the latest ones installed.

I reported the issue to EF as soon as I saw theissue, and evidenty they've been working closely with ATI in resolving various issues, and this one was in a database of vista fixes.

Sounds like it's more ATI's fault then anything else, but I personally don't care whose fault it is, so long as there's a cure.

I updated to 8.1 from 7.11 and I got this problem now on a 1600pro and got this problem.
It's a huge lag then I change from an object to camera or try use the material editor. Strangely moving the cameras work great but not to change cameras.

Will try to go back to 7.11 and see if it helps.
