THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Relief with terrains, a little present...

I've always been a fan of carved stone. Bryce's terrain editor is an excellent tool for bringing these kind of images to life. With 3D you get real shadows and break those hard edges that often spoil images. Here is a terrain I made of the Maya lord Pakal's coffin lid from Palenque.

First I took the original image from a garden magazine that sold wall hangings. The original image was 411 x 310. This is important becauses unlike leonardo, every image used to make a terrain in bryce will be made square. To get the right scale ratio the terrain will have to be resized once it is made.

The image was small so I doubled it in paintshop and applied a gausian blur of 1 to take off the sharp edges and give me more room to work. Here is the finished color image.

I turned the image into a grayscale to make it easier to draw on. I filled all the low spots by hand with black using the paintcan tool at a tolerance of about 30%. Then I painted the last few stragglers with the brush tool. For most of the carving however I just left the natural shadows from the photograph. Here is the bump map.

Excellent tip! I'll file this away for future reference... This will come in handy when I get something that I need to be in relief on terrains.

I created a terrain then clicked on the E and opened the terrain editor. I went to the Pictures tab on the editing tools window and loaded the bump map. I clipped the top off but the edges .That's what the yellow slider on the right of the image does.It looked too square so I took most of it back out. If you do any clipping it will leave holes unless you check the solid tab on the terrain editor. To get to that menu click the down arrowhead on the top rithe of the terrain window.

Back in the bryce main window click on any of the  scale functions to bring up the 3D Transformations window type in the original sizes to make the object not square. for the depth start with about 5% then play with the scale tool till it looks right.

This was what originally drew me to Bryce way back at Ver.2. There was an Imagine artist who, like Bryster, *heh heh heh *abandonded ship early and went over to Bryce who built a horse just like this, also a fully detailed suit of armour....can't remember his name but this is indeed a strength of Bryce especially with the symetrical terrain.. ...

If anyone has a fix on this dude a contact would be appreciated as he as I recall was a master of this technique which would work very well in Bryce, any version.. ...

Bobby, the link you gave is an ftp link and am getting error (Error 550 Fail to change directory).  Either the directory no longer exist or you got a dud link. (A Applique - creating a horse object)

Bummer
