Subject: Full Head of Hair

tronhed ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2008 at 1:38 PM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 9:43 PM

I'm having a hard time getting James High Res to have something other than a large bald spot on the top of his head.

I can create a skullcap just fine, and I've tried layering the front hair in squares of hair groups, but it still looks strange. Obviously, having the whole skullcap full of hair doesn't do the trick either as it often looks like the hair is going through the top of the head. The sides look ok, the back is fine, it's just the crown of the head.

I've tried turning up hair and root thickness to their fullest, yet the hair still looks thin and the top bald. Even the sides and back are sparse.

Any ideas?

I feel like I'm doing something wrong even though I've used the ideas seen in some tutorials. I'm trying for a wavy dark brown/black hair style and would simply paint it on after rendering the model were it not for the fact that I need to use this model multiple times in various scenes and I feel it may look odd if the hair isn't consistent.

Thanks.

A simple trick is just to paint the texture of the skullcap a dark hair-like color.  You may notice that in some commercial (polygonal) hairs that include a skullcap e.g. some Aery Soul hairs, this is how it's done.

I do realize you're working with dynamic hair - you can also try something like defining extra hair groups that overlap to fill in the thin areas, with a very dense layer of hairs with few segments, where you see it appears to be "thin".

I've noticed that whether or not dynamic hair looks "thin" has a LOT to do with the angle you're viewing it in. I've seen some commercial dynamic hairs who has a "rim" of very dense hair to mask the spots that would otherwise appear thin.

Zenman53186 uses that technique. I've got all of his(?) hair and they're all awesome!

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Thanks for the quick replies.

I'm also having a hard time getting premade hair to sit correctly on James if I alter his ethnicity dials, especially any that alter the shape of his head or make his skull wider. Any thoughts on how to get them to fit?

It doesn't seem like the Face room is remembering my changes as it goes back to default if I close then reopen the figure, though the figure retains the changes. I'm going to look through the contributors section again but this is my biggest concern if I take the route of using someone else's work. Thanks.

I use 3Dream's universal skullcaps underneath dynamic hair.  It's really hard to make dynamic hair thick enough to fully cover the skull in a closeup.
