Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 26 1:43 pm)
$3495 US . Must be good.
I paid about $60 for Carrara 6 . I'm downloading the Cinema 4D 10.5 demo at the moment.

OK $895
Same price range as modo 301 . Better ?
Can you buy it in sale sometimes? Like half price on special days?
At least there is no expiration date on the demo. I don't have to rush to try it
Now I have to find a tutorial . Nothing included with the demo (or I didn't see it yet) ..

What is your budget anyway ? There's all sort of apps from the free wings/blender to super expensive MAX/Maya that will do the job. It's just a question of how much you want to spend vs. how much spadework you are willing to do.
Carara alone will probably not work though, you need a proper modeller and a 2D editor like Photoshop, PSP or GIMP at the minimum.
P.S. i'll pimp XSI here, as that's what i use. All the goodness of a high end app with a very decent $500 pricetag :) Windows and Linux only though.

Carrara not a proper modeler - That's what I want to know. Big differences?
I have Photoshop.
At the moment not too much $$ . But in the future if I'm gonna make $$ with my creations I may put more $$ if I'm more productive. More $$ for a software doesn't always mean better.

Before you get those big $ signs in your eyes, you had better start with a free modeling app such as Wings3D, anim8tor or blender. See if you even like to model. Then try all the demos of all the modeling apps you can get you hands on and spend a few days on each one to find the modeling app that fits you. That is the most important thing in modeling. Does not matter what anyone else uses or thinks. You have to find Your modeler of choice. Believe me, you will know which one that is when you use it. It may even be one of the free ones and you will not need to spend any money for a long time.
I use Modo 301. See, everyone here is using something different and thinks thiers is the best. Which it is, for us.
Started a year ago with blender. Then played with Poser. Went to Hexagon and now I'm using Carrara . Tried a bit modo as well. I just downloaded Cinema 4D. There are too many to try all of them. And only with a few day trial you may have the wrong idea about a software. You may think it's buggy, it's only because you don't know how to use it correctly.
It seems there is no clear winner. I think I'll continue with Carrara.
But why is Carrara not a proper modeler. What am I missing ?

I do Wings3d, with a little assist from Blender and Topmod on days that end in 'r'...;) I know for a fact that some Apollo outfits are being done in Wings, so hey, it's free. Whaddaya got to lose?..;)I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Well if you like it then that's all that needs to be said. Its much more important that you be comfortable with your app then what features it may or may not have. That way you can focus on making stuff and not fighting the app.
(Plus if i start comparing features its only gonna turn into an app war :P)
Many people (including myself) like Silo a lot. There is a fully functional 30 day 1demo available and the price is reasonable as well ($ 159). Surface snapping is nice when modeling clothes.

That's the whole point. You need to find the modeler that clicks for you. If your fighting it, can't wrap your brain around it, then it's a waste of money. A couple of days Demo would be enough to see if it clicks for you, not master it, but feel comfortable.
Notice how many modelers have now been mentioned, most cost a a couple of hundred like silo and up. It's always, "mine is better than yours," in these threads and it is all BS because we're not you.
Carrara is a pain to use, besides the back and forth from room to room and lacks many ot the tools that other modelers use. I have C6pro and I would not spend a minute modeling with it, but that's me. But if you like modeling in Carrara, then use it. You need to use what works for you.
You could try Wings and see how it works for you. It's a block modeler and free. If you like using that, then that will give you a better idea on what type of modeling app will work for you. You see, if Wings works, then Hexagon and Silo may be good low cost apps for they are close to the same basics. Just more tools.
I couldn't get my head around Shade and Blender. Wings was better, but I prefer building spline cages as a base for my models.
Right now I'm using an old version of 3DS Max (don't want to pay for an upgrade I don't need). Does everything that I want.
The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
If you're just asking this question, here in the Poser forum, you probably do'nt want to look toward the higher end 3D Apps. Their learning curve is too expensive at your point. There is much you'l need to become aware of, first, in order to get your money's worth there.
Carrara is the closest 3D Modeler sibling of Poser. It's GUI, was created by the same people whom designed Poser's; and the program itself was began from a Modeler that that company owned. Currently you can get Carrara 5 Pro, for like $20. Issue $100, of 3DWorld Magazine, is currently(or very soon to be...) on shelves in your area, at like Barnes and Noble, or Borders. See this Daz3D forum post, for more information. I actually ordered mine right online, but had trouble there, and am not recommending that. I got my magazine, Installed the program, and had no trouble getting my C5Pro Serial Number from Daz3D; but my bank account turned into a Roller Coaster...
I use lightwave, but I would not buy an expensive modeller to make Poser stuff. I would look at Truespace 3 or 4 , silo, shade . The older versions or cheaper modellers. If the destination is Poser then the renderer, texturing, particle dynamics and so forth dont really matter, you just need a basic modeller able to export a mesh , preferably retaining surfaces and groups .
vote for hex here...does everything you would need.

OK thanks all for your replies. I'm not that new to modeling. I use to write modeling software but that was in the age of 2D with modems at 1200 bps.
At the moment I use Carrara 6 & Hexagon to create for Poser. I own these three.
I have downloaded all the free software mentioned and giving them a try.
I downloaded modo in January but tried it only once before it expired.
I could probably get modo at the educational price as I am a teacher.
Is there any way to get Cinema 4D at discount? Are there sales on that software?
At the moment I'm mainly studying these software and creating for fun. I may try to make $$ from this in about a year or two

I understand that if I buy a software with the educational pricing that I'll have to buy the full price package when I'll be ready to make $$.
Is the normal Carrara 6 & Hexagon license the full commercial license?

Hexagon is a great tool, especially for the price. I have access to several big apps (because I do arch Viz at work), and find myself using Hexagon all the time, especially for Poser stuff.

I use lightwave myself here, but am slowly learning Modo in hopes of replacing lightwave with it as my main modeler.
I agree almost completely. I've been using LW Modeler for several years now, and modo for about two years. I don't make things for sale here, but the idea is the same...
But, modo is still kind of quirky, for lack of a better word. The interface constantly reverting and changing to whatever it feels like is a bit annoying.
Hexagon, to me, looks like it was designed after modo. I tried it over a year ago, and couldn't do anything with it, since all it really wanted to do was crash. I'm sure it's gotten better by now though.
Back to modo and LW though, I'm going to keep updating each. I find that LightWave Modeler and modo are an awesome combination together. I usually have them both open and shuffle the model I'm working on at the time back and forth. What LW lacks, modo has, and vice versa. modo's edge tools are particularly well-advanced over LW's, as is modo's UV mapping. But. the world of LW has created a whole lot of free plugins to accomplish the things LW itself doesn't do well or at all. Unfortunately, most of them won't work in 64 bit.
Another thing about modo is its render engine. Modo 301 has a fantastic render engine and an equally fantastic preview render.
Bottom line is, for someone interested in modeling with a GREAT modeling program, and who doesn't mind spending a bit of cash, I'd recommend modo 301 over anything else I've ever used. Plus as I mentioned, it has an extremely advanced render engine, more than capable of being used for professional work.
Only downside I can see to modo is it's still only available in 32-bit for now.
Modo is 32 bit for now, yes, but purrs on a 64 bit. Believe me, it is amazing how fast it is when installed to a 64 bit os. I use XP64.
Modo will be 64 bit. I was told that by Luxology on the phone. They are working on it right now but was not sure when it will be released. 302 is on it's was soon. Maybe it will come with the 64bit update too.
A word about Hexagon.
It's definitely not running on all hardware configurations. Had it on an AMD 6000X2/Geforce 5600 - nope, had it on an AMD 4800X2/Radeon 1900 - nope.
Was running it for a while on a notebook (Dual T2050, Ati Radeon Xpress200M) - no problems.
Now I have got it on a QuadCore (Q6600@4x3GHz) with a Radeon 2600 Pro), and I am able to handle even a 1.8 M (!) vertices without even thinking about crashes.
Hexagon is tricky as far as the GUI and the workflow is concerned (validate....validate....validate...) but is a simple and a good modeler (never wanted to be more than this).
The tut that comes with Hex is a lousy joke (won't find the videos it's referring to...) but once you learned to understand Hex's a bit weird dialect, you will understand.
Another application which is not bad is Blacksmith, which is at the lower price segment, too. It's more like "analogue modelling" than everything else I had, and I use it occasionaly.

Oh, I know. I use it on 64 bit Vista Ultimate. In fact, I have it open right now, working on an object with about 150,000 polygons. Quite fast, and an extreme pleasure to use.
There seemed to be some speculation at the Lux forum that 302 might be 64 bit. Seems as though I read it might be here around March. or maybe it was May. Can't remember.
I'll say another thing about modo, regarding rendering. Its SSS is amazingly easy to set up and get great results, quickly. LightWave can get great SSS results too, but it's like pulling teeth sometimes to get something good.

By pro I mean the ones that make for a living all the creations in Renderosity's store?
From the hammers and glasses to the space ships?
I guess the volume is for Poser & Carrara ..
What software(s) do they use to make those meshes ?
Carrara? Hexagon? or others?
Can it be done only in Carrara?
