Greetings,

Here are 3 views of the same tool.

Let's hear some questions ... and some guesses.

Hints may come as needed.

Good luck.

Humm, a stumper but my first guess is general...a holder for a working gouge, bit or punch.

MGD ( ) posted Sun, 24 February 2008 at 8:29 PM

I see that TomDart has offered the first guess,

a holder for a working gouge, bit or punch.

Sorry, no.

It isn't a 'helper' tool or part of another tool.

Please try again.

So, this is the total tool...hummm again.

I see that ColdWarTendencies thought it might be,

an attachemnt ? (sp?)
Something electrical ?

I see that bentchick thought it could be,

A type of latching or locking device?

No, not latching or locking.

OTOH, when used, it does release a result from within something.

Based on images in your gallery, I am pretty sure that someone in your area has one and uses it.

Thanks, please try agan.

I thing that tennesseecowgirl was planning a party and needed,

 A cork screw...

No, not a corkscrew ... not associated with food and/or drink.

BTW, to use a corkscrew, you turn it and pull ... to use this device, you hold it steady -- it doesn't move.

Thanks for playing ... please try again.

Hmmm.....Looks familiar...also looks like it fits into something....OTOH, when used, it does release a result from within something.  pushes something out?

Based on images in your gallery, I am pretty sure that someone in your area has one and uses it.

Sounds like a bit of photo equipment.... an extention for ..? what I wonder.  you hold it  steady.
I would think it has got to do with reflectors or even focus.......nope nothing comes to mind
unberella?

JeffG7BRJ ( ) posted Mon, 25 February 2008 at 4:46 AM

I was thinking something to do with cheese, but read it has nothing to do with food, has it anything to do with leather? or mining?

MGD ( ) posted Mon, 25 February 2008 at 7:37 AM

I see that newleaf made many guesses,

looks like it fits into something

No

it does release a result from within something.
pushes something out?

No ... 'releases' ... in the sense of sculpture technique.

a bit of photo equipment.... an extention for

No, Not photo equipment; No not an extension ... it is the entire tool for the task.

reflectors or even focus ... unberella?

No, No, No.

Very interesting guesses ... please try again ...

was thinking something to do with cheese

Ahhhh ... is 4:46am [renderosity time] breakfast time for you?

Sorry, nothing to do with cheese

anything to do with leather? or mining?

No, nothing to do with mining.

OTOH, 'leather' ... now there's an idea to follow

Please keep on ...

LOL yes and you are ALL invited..

scoleman123 ( ) posted Mon, 25 February 2008 at 8:35 AM

is it used as a threading device? As in using strips of leather to make something, the strips being held in the groves.

prixat ( ) posted Mon, 25 February 2008 at 8:42 AM

Looks like blades between the plastic. ...and the plastic guides seem to make different widths. I think its a Wire Stripper. or it could be a trimmer for really stubborn nasal hair

I see that tennesseecowgirl is thinking of having a party,

and you are ALL invited..

Will that be a variation on a Tupperware party?  [sly grin]

p.s. Please send design sketches under separate cover.  Thanks.

I see that scoleman123 wants to know if,

is it used as a threading device?

No.

No  I was thinking more of a ' Lingerie'  party ...........who's coming???         HAHA

MGD ( ) posted Mon, 25 February 2008 at 9:45 AM

I see that prixat had given it a close look ... and was the first to mention,

blades between the plastic.

...and the plastic guides seem to make different widths.

Also a very good observation.

I think its a Wire Stripper.

Sorry, No.

Generally, wire strippers have 2 opposing concave blades ... in order to get
the insulation off all sides of the wire.

or it could be a trimmer for really stubborn nasal hair

LOL.  As it is about 3/4 inch in diameter ... it just might be a little uncomfortable
if used for that purpose.  Very clever surmise ... but ... sorry, No.

Thanks ...

In as much as **prixat** voiced the opinion,

I think its a Wire Stripper.

I thought it would be nice to show y'all an image of my wire stripper [above].

Please take special note of the serrated areas of the jaws -- although each
grove is designed for a specific wire size (and marked in both AWG [American
Wire Guage]
and metric sizes) ... those jaws are rather non discriminating
when the time comes to bite your finger, hand, the web between thumb and
hand, ... etc.

I speak from vast experience ... and experience is a painful instructor.

But, best of all, I see that Melen was right,

isn't this a tool to cut strips of leather?

Yes

I forget the name of the tool tho.

It is called a Lace Cutter.  or Lace Maker.

I bought mine from Spotted Pony Traders while attending the Pennsic War ... unofficial

I found another online supplier ... Rude Dog Leather (doncha' just love that
name???) sells a Lace Making Tool

Thanks to everyone for playing ... Please stay tuned for some show and tell images to follow ...

Step # 1 ... cut a 1.5 inch round hole in a scrap of leather ... should be close to square.

MGD ( ) posted Mon, 25 February 2008 at 11:13 AM

file_400712.jpg

Step # 2 ... start the Lace Cutter in the hole.

Step # 3 ... pull on the lace.  Sorry that I can't extract the lace and take
a picture at the same time).

The leather scrap will 'spin' around the cutter.

The process is quite similar to how an MBA or Management Consultant
would change a light bulb ...

[first step] holds the upraised light bulb

[second step] ... while the world turns around him.

I seriously need to get one of these. Cutting many strips of leather freehand is a royal pain in the behind.

Melen,

Congratulations ...

You can start the next WoE challenge at any time ... perhaps in a new thread.

I noticed that Melen said,

I seriously need to get one of these.

... and since my prior message mentioned a 'lace cutter' and also mentioned a 'management consultant' ... quite naturally, I wondered which one of those was Melen hoping to acquire???

Inquiring minds want to know.  LOL
